The diagnosis of vascular hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) requires consistent symptoms, photographic evidence of digital blanching and sufficient exposure to hand-transmitted vibration (HTV; A(8) > 2.5 m/s2). There is no reliable quantitative investigation for distinguishing HAVS from other causes of Raynaud's phenomenon and from normal individuals. Hypothenar and thenar hammer syndromes produce similar symptoms to HAVS but are difficult to diagnose clinically and may be confused with HAVS. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a safe and minimally invasive method of visualizing blood ves…

Different types of L1 adaptive control systems show that using robust theories with adaptive control approaches has produced high performance controllers. In this study, a model reference adaptive control scheme considering robust theories is used to propose a practical control system for vibration suppression of a flexible launch vehicle (FLV). In this method, control input of the system is shaped from the dynamic model of the vehicle and components of the control input are adaptively constructed by estimating the undesirable vibration frequencies. Robust stability of the adaptive vibration c…

BACKGROUND: Back injuries are common in transit drivers, and can result in substantial direct and indirect cost to the employer and employee. Whole-body vibration (WBV) is one risk factor for drivers. Standards have been adopted (ISO 2631-1) to guide researchers in measuring and analysing WBV levels. Lately, a new standard has been added (ISO 2631-5) that takes impulsive exposures into account.
AIMS: The aims of this study were to determine the levels of vibration for bus drivers using both ISO 2631-1 and 2631-5 standards, and whether there are differences in vibration levels and seat transmi…

In the middle ear, a chain of three tiny bones (ie, malleus, incus, and stapes) vibrates to transmit sound from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. Little is known about whether and how bone-resorbing osteoclasts play a role in the vibration of auditory ossicles. We analyzed hearing function and morphological features of auditory ossicles in osteopetrotic mice, which lack osteoclasts because of the deficiency of either cytokine RANKL or transcription factor c-Fos. The auditory brainstem response showed that mice of both genotypes experienced hearing loss, and laser Doppler vibrometry revea…

Vibration of the dorsolateral neck stimulates proprioceptors that are normally active during head movement; this induces a visual illusion of contralateral motion and displacement of a stationary target seen against a homogenous background. The spatial constancy explanation of the illusion argues that it occurs because information about head movement is necessary for accurate egocentric localization of visual objects. Accurate egocentric localization, in turn, is necessary for the success of object-directed motor action, but previous studies failed to find evidence that vibration affects point…

CONCLUSION: The incidence of ipsilesional beating vibration induced nystagmus (VIN) is significantly higher in Meniere's disease (MD) with lower canal paresis (CP) group on caloric test and the intensity of VIN shows significant positive correlation with CP. Considering previous reports showing predominant loss of type II hair cells in MD and discrepancy of the results between caloric test and head thrust test in MD patients, VIN may provide valuable information regarding the functional reservoir of vestibular type II hair cells in MD.
OBJECTIVES: Clinical presentation of MD is dynamic and ny…

The authors studied serum phospholipid subunits in patients with anthracosilicosis associated with vibration disease. Findings are significantly higher detergent fraction of phospholipids--lysophosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, sphingomyelin, lower phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphoinositides--that suggests increased transmissivity of biologic membranes and activated inosite mechanism of transmembrane signal transmission. Aeroionization appeared to have positive influence, normalizing serum phospholipids level.

This review attempts to summarize and discuss contemporary pathogenetic views on vibration-induced Raynaud's phenomenon assuming its multifactorial etiology. An increase in central and peripheral sympathetic nervous activity is discussed based on different physiological indicators of autonomic dysfunction and sympathetic hyperactivity. Local acral vasodysregulation is considered. Receptor and nerve endings dysfunction presented with predominance of alpha(2)-receptor function in the digital arteries and neuronal loss in those digital cutaneous perivascular nerves containing calcitonin gene-rela…

The present experiment addressed the time course of corticospinal excitability changes following interventional muscle tendon vibration. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation, motor evoked potentials of the flexor carpi radialis and extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle were recorded for a period of 60 min after cessation of vibration (80 Hz, 0.5 mm, 30 min) to the distal wrist flexor tendons. A delayed corticospinal excitability increase in both the vibrated and non-vibrated antagonistic muscle was observed, with lasting levels of facilitation for the latter. No changes were observed follow…

A finite-element model of the vocal fold is developed from basic laws of continuum mechanics to obtain the oscillatory characteristics of the vocal folds. The model is capable of accommodating inhomogeneous, anisotropic material properties and irregular geometry of the boundaries. It has provisions for asymmetry across the midplane, both from the geometric and tension point of view, which enables one to simulate certain kinds of voice disorders due to vocal-fold paralysis. It employs the measured viscoelastic properties of the vocal-fold tissues. The detailed construction of the matrix differe

Ocular vasospasm in response to local and/or systemic stimuli may contribute to ischemia of the optic nerve. The Hettinger hand vibration test was applied to patients with and without glaucoma to identify subgroups with a high systemic vasospastic tendency. A total of 580 subjects were tested (113 controls, 86 glaucoma suspects, 270 with primary open-angle glaucoma, 71 with secondary open-angle glaucoma, 30 with normal-tension glaucoma, and 10 with angle-closure glaucoma). The frequency distribution curve of Hettinger scores (HS) was bimodal, suggesting two distinct groups. Within each diagnos…

It is estimated that 1.2 million workers are now exposed to hazardous levels of vibration in their work. In the year 1995-1996, over 3,000 new cases of hand-arm vibration syndrome were assessed by the Department of Social Security (DSS) under the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit Scheme. Formerly called vibration white finger, it is the most common of all diseases assessed by the DSS, with the majority of workers affected having up to 14 per cent disability. This article explains the syndrome and its management.

This study was designed to determine whether vibration thresholds of transcriptionists varied significantly from the thresholds of individuals not exposed to keyboard activities. Using a multifrequency vibrometer, we obtained vibration threshold values from 31 medical transcriptionists who perform work on computer keyboards and compared them to values obtained from 40 control subjects. Thresholds tended to become more abnormal at higher frequencies, although this difference was statistically significant only at frequencies of 125 Hz, 250 Hz, and 500 Hz in the index and small fingers. Vibration…

Vibration white finger or hand-arm vibration syndrome is the episodic blanching of the fingers in response to cold occurring in those who work with hand held vibrating tools. Clinically the condition differs from primary Raynaud's phenomenon as persistent paraesthesiae and pain are common in the hands and arms and these occur independently from the 'white attacks'. Symptoms can become severe enough to warrant a change of occupation. Industrial compensation may be awarded for vibration white finger but, at present, no simple or reliable objective diagnostic test is available. Calcitonin gene-re…

In the 1950s, introduction of portable power tools into the production process of many industries began on a large scale around the world and resulted in many cases of occupational vibration syndrome after the 1960s. There was an urgent need to undertake preventive steps, medical assessment and therapy throughout the world. At the end of 1964, our investigation began in Japanese national forests, and then in mining and stone quarries. Our research and efforts resulted in a comprehensive system for prevention of vibration syndrome in the Japanese national forest industry. It has presented a goo…

We investigated a new means of diagnosing occult scaphoid fractures. Eighty-six patients underwent vibratory testing at presentation, while the clinical examination and standard four-view x-ray examination findings were unknown to the persons who performed the vibratory testing of both the injured and uninjured wrists. Thirty-six patients had radiographically confirmed scaphoid fractures and, after their vibratory tests, were eliminated from the study. Fifty patients, 39 men and 11 women, were believed to have scaphoid fractures on the basis of history and clinical examination findings but wer

Due to the ever-increasing problems associated with carpal tunnel syndrome in the workplace where exposure to neurotoxic substances may also occur, measure of nerve function addressing both of these neuropathies is needed. Limitations in the standard neurological examination and nerve conduction studies have resulted in efforts to develop portable instruments for quantitative sensory testing. Fingertip vibration perception is altered in carpal tunnel syndrome and toxic neuropathies. Vibration perception is described for the median-innervated II digit and the ulnar-innervated V digit using an O…

A visual task was devised to determine the minimum levels of whole-body vibration that affect human vision. This task was the perception of the blur-due to eye motion-of an image of a stationary point source of light and is considered to be as sensitive as any alternative measure of the effects of vibration on visual acuity. Minimum levels of sinusoidal vertical vibration required to produce blur have been determined in a group of 12 subjects seated in a posture that maximised the sensation of vibration at their heads. The effect of vibration frequency (from 7 to 75 Hz) differed between subjec…
