BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive and video assisted mitral valve surgery has been used widely since beginning of 20th. Different reduced surgical approaches allowed replacing or repairing a mitral valve sparing sternal incision. Nevertheless the most used strategy has been in the last years the right mini thoracotomy and the extra thoracic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The main goal is avoiding sternal approach for mitral valve procedures and improve postoperative course of the patients. Some postoperative complication likes blood loss, need for transfusion, prolonged intubation and infection ha

Renal hydatid disease is rare in children. Open surgery is the traditional method of treatment, but minimally invasive techniques are being increasingly used. Herein, we report our experience with laparoscopic management of renal hydatid cyst in four children via a transperitoneal approach in three cases and a retroperitoneoscopy in one. We conclude that transperitoneal laparoscopy can be offered for the management of hydatid renal cyst associated with other intraperitoneal localizations, whereas the retroperitoneoscopy is limited for the treatment of isolated hydatid renal cysts.

Minimally invasive thoracic surgery has advanced the treatment of lung cancer since its introduction in the 1990s. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) offer the advantage of smaller incisions without compromising patient outcomes. These techniques have been shown to be safe and effective in standard pulmonary resections (lobectomy and sub-lobar resection) and in complex pulmonary resections (sleeve resection and pneumonectomy). Furthermore, several studies show these techniques enhance patient outcomes from early recovery to improved quality

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative tracheobronchial injury is a rare but serious complication of lung surgery. With the increasing number of segmentectomies, surgeons need to locate finer and less easily identified segmental bronchi or even subsegmental bronchi. However, there is no simple or feasible method for visualizing the bronchus during surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a case in which indocyanine green (ICG) inhalation was used to visualize the pulmonary bronchus during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The patient was a woman with a GGO located in the anterior segment of the

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a significant public health concern in endemic regions. Although pulmonary involvement is rare, there are a few reported cases of empyema. This case report discusses a rare instance of brucellosis leading to empyema and pleural thickening.
CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old patient presented with dyspnea and was subsequently diagnosed with pleural effusion. Based on the medical history, tests were conducted on blood and pleural fluid, both of which tested strongly positive for Brucella agglutination. Further imaging showed pleural thickening and an expansion defect, necessi

A discussion of an internal mammary artery aneurysm is a rare finding in the literature. This condition can cause serious complications, including haemothorax and pneumo-haemothorax, and can lead to haemorrhagic shock; it can also be fatal. These effects can be explained by the rate of flow of the blood in the internal mammary artery, that is, 150 ml/minute, which leads to a blood loss of one litre in minutes. As reported in the literature, it has many different clinical presentations. Because an internal mammary artery aneurysm occurs so rarely, agreement regarding the best way to manage its

INTRODUCTION: Pericardial drainage can be performed either with pericardiocentesis or pericardial "window" in cases with hemodynamic compromise for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. Awake single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is an alternative to pericardial window (PW) that has been described only in case reports in the literature. We aimed to analyse a series of patients with chronic, recurrent and/or large pericardial effusions who underwent single-port VATS-PW opening without intubation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The PW was opened using awake single-port VATS in 20 of 23

Pleural adhesions are a major challenge in standard and nonintubated video-assisted thoracic surgery. The currently available imaging techniques help to assess the presence and extent of pleural adhesions, but do not provide information on tissue deformability, which is crucial for intraoperative management. In this report, we describe the utilization of real-time elastography mapping of pleural adhesions. This technique enabled us to detect areas with softer adhesions, and helped establish the surgical plan in a difficult case of a patient scheduled for nonintubated video-assisted thoracic su

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a well-known disease in adults, but the prevalence in children population is low. One treatment option is thymectomy. Transsternal procedure have been the primary approach, but recent trends lean toward minimally invasive technique with triportal and, recently, uniportal thoracoscopic method. This is related to the suggested less blood loss and hospital length of stay.
CASE PRESENTATION: Hereby we report a case of a 4-year-old boy suffering from Juvenile Myasthenia Gravis (JMG) with thymic hyperplasia who underwent extended thymectomy via

It remains unclear whether non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is comparable or advantageous compared with conventional intubated VATS. Thus, we systematically assessed the feasibility and safety of non-intubated VATS compared with intubated VATS perioperatively for the treatment of different thoracic diseases. An extensive search of literature databases was conducted. Perioperative outcomes were compared between 2 types of operations. The time trend of the overall results was evaluated through a cumulative meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses of different thoracic diseases a

Independent subsuperior segmentectomy (S*) via uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has rarely been reported. We describe our modified technique of performing simplified left subsuperior segmentectomy for a lung nodule, via 2-cm uniportal VATS. The uniportal approach was different from the traditional approach made by blunt separation into the thorax without electrocautery. Our modified technique minimizes damage to the intercostal nerves and muscles. We also simplified the subsuperior segmentectomy procedure according to the findings of three-dimensional (3D) computed tomogra
