Transcultural analysis of postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) strikes about 1 in 10 Western women. Studies of Western women have demonstrated that this emotional experience can occur during pregnancy and/or after delivery, and even in women who adopt an infant. Is PPD a universal experience or a morbid condition that is culture specific to Western/industrialized countries? The purpose of this literature review was to examine other cultures to ascertain whether PPD is a universal experience. The literature describes women throughout the world experiencing degrees of sadness postnatally, which persist up to 1 year. The risk fact

Different Peoples, Different Inebriations: The Recognition of Different Cultures of Intoxication in Early Modern English Medicine.

In early modern Europe, the global dimensions of the drug trade and the introduction of new substances contributed to the development of new cultures of intoxication. This process was particularly evident in England, where a new intoxication culture emerged from the recognition of how different substances produced similar reactions. Medical travel literature provides a critical source for examining alternative methods of drug consumption in the non-Western world in this period: culturally embedded practices like Turkish opium eating or Native American tobacco smoking became significant benchma…

Schistosomal appendicitis: a rare cause of a common surgical condition.

Despite the prevalence of schistosomiasis across the world, appendicitis secondary to schistosomiasis is a rarely encountered presentation even in endemic areas, let alone in developed Western countries. We report a case of a 34-year-old male in Australia with acute appendicitis and subsequent histopathology, demonstrating the presence of schistosome ova. The case highlights the difficulties in pre-operative diagnosis of this entity and the importance of its recognition for the practising surgeon, especially in the developed world, where this rare condition may be encountered because of changi

Certification of poliomyelitis eradication--Western Pacific Region, October 2000.

On October 29, 2000, the Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication certified that the Western Pacific Region (WPR) of the World Health Organization (WHO) is free of indigenous wild poliovirus transmission. The last known case of indigenous poliovirus transmission occurred in Cambodia in March 1997 in a 15-month-old girl. WPR is the second of the six WHO regions to be certified as poliomyelitis-free; the first was the Region of the Americas in 1994. WPR comprises 37 countries and territories (Figure 1) with an estimated 1.6 billion persons (27% of the world's popula

Epidermolysis bullosa care in Israel.

The Israeli population is characterized by unique demographic features including high genetic homogeneity within many closed communities. As a consequence the molecular epidemiology of epidermolysis bullosa differs markedly in this country and surrounding areas from that reported in the Western world.

The British Missionaries' Attempts to Identify Chinese Medicine.

The Western world has a profound historical engagement with medicinal resources originating from China. Following the Opium War, missionaries were granted access to China and established residence there. Motivated by clinical necessities and the inquisitiveness of the Western scientific community, these missionaries meticulously documented the medicinal resources available in China, endeavoring to incorporate this knowledge into Western pharmacology. Among the various reports produced in multiple languages, the contributions in English have emerged as particularly influential. This article see…

[Co-infections of leishmania/HIV in south Europe].

The Leishmania/HIV co-infection has emerged as a result of the increasing overlap between leishmaniasis (mainly visceral, more rarely cutaneous) and AIDS, which is due to the spread of the AIDS pandemic to rural areas and that of visceral leishmaniasis to suburban areas. Cases of co-infection have so far been reported from 33 countries around the world, most of the cases have been notified in south-western Europe. 1,627 cases have been notified from Spain, France, Italy and Portugal. While Leishmania/HIV co-infection is increasing in eastern Africa, cases of co-infection are expected to dimini

World Health Organization activities on anthrax surveillance and control.

The achievements of a World Health Organization Anthrax Working Group, established in 1990, have been the production of two editions of guidelines on anthrax surveillance and control and the formulation of templates to assist countries in the construction of their surveillance and control programmes. The latter was made possible by the active participation of the Department of Animal Production and Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, Zambia and the Livestock Development Programme, Mongu, Western Province, Zambia in a model country programme designed by the Working Group for th

Apparent global interruption of wild poliovirus type 2 transmission.

In 1988, the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) resolved to eradicate poliomyelitis by 2000. Since then, the WHO Region of the Americas and Western Pacific Region have been certified free of polio, and the European Region is approaching 3 years since the last confirmed case of polio. Transmission of wild poliovirus types 1 and 3 continues to decline in the other WHO regions. This report summarizes the evidence, obtained through surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), supporting the global interruption of wild poliovirus type 2 transmission.

Oesophageal carcinoma: the need for screening.

Oesophageal cancer is a substantial cause of mortality in the Western world and recent data indicate that the incidence is increasing. Despite better understanding of the pathogenesis and in the surgical management of the disease, little improvement in the survival rates has been achieved anywhere in the world, especially because screening for detection of premalignant lesions cannot, at present, be adequately applied to populations at risk. The present review summarizes current knowledge of the use of conventional screening methods as well as possible applications of new techniques to targete…

Rasmussen's aneurysm: a forgotten entity?

We present the case of a rare entity which is a complication of a disease process that had almost disappeared from the Western World. With the recent resurgence in reported cases of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) in Western communities, it is important to recognize complications and sequelae. A young alcoholic male with confirmed active TB suffered a cardiac arrest following massive haemoptysis. Multidetector computed tomography angiography diagnosed a Rasmussen's aneurysm, confirmed by digital subtraction angiography and then successfully embolized with glue. We outline this rare case and th…

Regulation of human sexual behaviour, sex revolution and emergence of AIDS: a historical perspective.

No Society in the World permits fully free sexual behaviour. All societies utilize a variety of ways for regulation of sexual behaviour. This has been happening since antiquity. Culture also affects sexual behaviour. In western civilization there was a healthly outlook towards sexuality during Greco-Roman era. In Indian civilization also human sexuality was considered an inseparable part of life and was given a higher place in human life. Many treatises on human sexuality were written. Sex was considered as an art and was given an exalted status through the medium of sculpture work in temples

The Global Epidemic of the Metabolic Syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome, variously known also as syndrome X, insulin resistance, etc., is defined by WHO as a pathologic condition characterized by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Though there is some variation in the definition by other health care organization, the differences are minor. With the successful conquest of communicable infectious diseases in most of the world, this new non-communicable disease (NCD) has become the major health hazard of modern world. Though it started in the Western world, with the spread of the Western lifestyle across the gl…

Enabling Rapid Response to the 2014-2016 Ebola Epidemic: The Experience and the Results of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani.

The unprecedented epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa highlighted the need for stronger systems for disease surveillance, response, and prevention worldwide. Tackling an epidemic event today requires a broader view, not only limited to medical management of the patients, but which also includes heroic efforts by clinicians and public health personnel.Since its foundation in 1936, INMI has been devoted to the prevention, diagnosis and care for infectious diseases. In 2009, INMI became a WHO collaborative center for clinical care, diagnosis, response and training on Highly Infec

[The occidental model of madness. A critical approach to the concept of ethnopsychiatry].

In this article the author draws out the main characteristics of the model of madness in the Western world. This process hinges on an approach of the psychopathological phenomenon within the viewpoint of cultural anthropology. The different cultural expressions and hermeneutic approaches to mental troubles have been brought out by transcultural studies, more particularly concerning depressions. The western model of madness lies within the history of medicine, this is not always the case in other cultural contexts. The question of organic causes has long been debated. The etiologic viewpoint of…

[The relationship between asthma and chronic obstructive and restrictive pulmonary diseases; lessons from the past century].

The so-called 'Dutch hypothesis' (Fletcher) which describes chronic obstructive (restrictive) pulmonary disease (CO(R)PD) as a consequence of complicated childhood asthma (from 1900-1960) is well-founded. It can explain many aspects of the ever changing pattern of asthma and COPD in the Western world. Severe respiratory disease in children during the first part of the 20th century was primarily the result of respiratory complications of measles and whooping cough, and caused a high mortality in children below the age of two years. Gradually more children survived and a picture of the complicat…
