Running Through the Haze: How Wildfire Smoke Affects Physical Activity and Mental Well-Being.

BACKGROUND: With a warming climate, extreme wildfires are more likely to occur, which may adversely affect air quality, physical activity (PA), and therefore, mental well-being. METHODS: We assessed PA engagement and mental well-being between periods with and without wildfire smoke, and whether there were associations between changes in PA behavior and mental well-being. Questionnaires on PA and mental well-being during a period of wildfire smoke were completed by 348 participants; of these participants, 162 also completed a follow-up PA and mental well-being questionnaire during a period wit…

Excess prenatal loss and respiratory illnesses of infant macaques living outdoors and exposed to wildfire smoke.

Global climate change has transformed predictions of fire seasons in the near future, and record-breaking wildfire events have had catastrophic consequences in recent years. In September 2020, multiple wildfires subjected Oregon to hazardous air quality for several days. In this retrospective cohort study, we aimed to examine prenatal loss, morbidity, and mortality of rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) exposed to poor air quality from the nearby wildfires. Detailed medical records from 2014 to 2020 of 580 macaques housed outdoors at a research facility in Beaverton,…

Health Assessments of Koalas after Wildfire: A Temporal Comparison of Rehabilitated and Non-Rescued Resident Individuals.

Many koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) required rehabilitation after the 2019/20 Australian megafires. Little is known about how the post-release health of rehabilitated koalas compares to non-rescued resident koalas. We evaluated health parameters in rehabilitated koalas and resident koalas in burnt and unburnt habitat in southern New South Wales, Australia. Health checks were undertaken within six weeks of fire (rehabilitated group), 5-9 months post-fire and 12-16 months post-fire. Body condition improved significantly over time in rehabilitated koalas, with similar condition between all group

Wildfire prevention through prophylactic treatment of high-risk landscapes using viscoelastic retardant fluids.

Polyphosphate fire retardants are a critical tactical resource for fighting fires in the wildland and in the wildland-urban interface. Yet, application of these retardants is limited to emergency suppression strategies because current formulations cannot retain fire retardants on target vegetation for extended periods of time through environmental exposure and weathering. New retardant formulations with persistent retention to target vegetation throughout the peak fire season would enable methodical, prophylactic treatment strategies of landscapes at high risk of wildfires through prolonged pr…

Post-fire surface water quality: comparison of fire retardant versus wildfire-related effects.

An understanding of the environmental effects of the use of wildland fire retardant is needed to provide informed decision-making regarding forest management. We compiled data from all post-fire surface water monitoring programs where the fire retardant constituents ammonia, phosphorus, and cyanide were measured, and data were available in the public domain. For streams near four major wildfires, we evaluated whether these chemicals originated primarily from fire or from retardant use. We compared measured concentrations in streams where chemical wildland fire retardant was applied with concen…

No one is immune: neighborhood trends and disparities in air pollution exposure in the city of Chicago during summer 2023 wildfires.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, Chicago experienced unprecedented levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) caused by the long-range transport of wildf … in northern and central Chicago. SIGNIFICANCE: WFS is degrading air quality even in areas far from wildfires. During WFS peak periods, no region was spared from marked increases in PM2.5 from transported WFS. Lower income and higher minority communities had higher baseline PM2.5 levels and took longer to return to pre-peak citywide average PM2.5 concentrat …

Combined exposure to wildfire ash and road salts reshapes skin and gut microbiota and reduces fitness in amphibians.

Rising wildfire risk and continued winter road maintenance increase the potential for wildfire ash and road salts to enter cold-region amphibian breeding habitats via rainfall or snowmelt runoff, yet their combined effects on skin and gut microbiota remain unclear. Rana dybowskii tadpoles were exposed for 28 days to control (C), low-temperature road salt (D), eco-friendly road salt (H), aqueous extract of wildfire ash (T), T + D (TD), and T + H (TH). Skin and gut microbiota were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that exposure reduced body mass, developmental proportio

Mechanistic drivers of PM2.5 emissions and water-soluble organic compounds and spectral characteristics from wildfire combustion.

Wildfire emissions of PM2.5, including its water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) fraction, pose a significant threat to the global environment and human health. However, the dynamic correlations among the fire environment, fire behavior, as well as the fluorescence components and spectral characteristics of WSOC remain unclear. In this study, a total of 144 indoor simulated combustion experiments and subsequent indoor tests were carried out by setting different fuel loads, fuel moisture contents, and slopes. The results indicated that both the fire environment and fire behavior had a signific

De-energization as maladaptation: Uneven residential exposure to wildfire Public Safety Power Shutoffs and compound heat.

In response to growing levels of wildfire destruction, electric utility companies are adopting powerline de-energization as an adaptation strategy intended to prevent wildfire ignitions. While reducing wildfire risk, planned de-energizations also expose residents to electricity loss, potentially causing harmful consequences. We investigated the extent to which planned de-energization can be considered a form of maladaptation, in which an adaptive response to a climate-related hazard results in unintended, concurrent harms. To do so, we examined the co-occurrence of Public Safety Power Shutoffs

Contrasting the efficiency of landscape versus community protection fuel treatment strategies to reduce wildfire exposure and risk.

We examined the financial efficiency and effectiveness of landscape versus community protection fuel treatments to reduce structure exposure and loss to wildfire on a large fire-prone area of central Idaho (USA). The study area contained 63,707 structures distributed in 20 rural communities and resorts, encompassing 13,804 km2. We used simulation modeling to estimate expected structure loss based on burn probability and characteristics of the home ignition zone. We then designed three fuel management strategies that targeted treatments to: 1) the surrounding areas predicted to be the source of

Hazardous Air Pollutants in Fresh and Aged Western US Wildfire Smoke and Implications for Long-Term Exposure.

Wildfires have a significant adverse impact on air quality in the United States (US). To understand the potential health impacts of wildfire smoke, many epidemiology studies rely on concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM) as a smoke tracer. However, there are many gas-phase hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that are also present in wildfire smoke plumes. Using observations from the Western Wildfire Experiment for Cloud Chemistry, Aerosol Absorption, and Nitrogen (WE-CAN), a 2018 aircraft-based field campaign that measured HAPs and PM…
