Retrieval of a Esophageal pH Monitoring Probe Dislodged Into the Laryngopharynx: A Case Report.

Esophageal pH monitoring via wireless probes is used to evaluate chest pain and atypical symptoms and diagnose gastroesophageal reflux. These probes are commonly placed during esophagogastroduodenoscopy performed by gastroenterologists in an ambulatory anesthesia setting. Dislodgment and aspiration of these probes can cause morbidity, require surgical removal, and involve the anesthesia provider in prolonged emergency care. We present a case of a probe dislodgment where aspiration was avoided and describe how retrieval of this device is different from typical hypopharyngeal foreign body remova

Near-Infrared-Light Activatable Nanoparticles for Deep-Tissue-Penetrating Wireless Optogenetics.

Optogenetics has been developed to control the activities and functions of cells with high spatiotemporal resolution, cell-type specificity, and flexibility. However, current optogenetic tools generally rely on visible light (e.g., blue or yellow) with shallow tissue penetration ability that does require invasive fiber-optic probes to deliver visible light into organs and animal tissues. This often results in a series of side effects, such as tissue damage and unwanted inflammation. Fortunately, the emerging wireless optogenetic tools that can respond to deep-tissue-penetrating near-infrared (

Autonomous and Rechargeable Microneurostimulator Endoscopically Implantable into the Submucosa.

Gastric dysmotility can be a sign of common diseases such as longstanding diabetes mellitus. It is known that the application of high-frequency low-energetic stimulation can help to effectively moderate and alleviate the symptoms of gastric dysmotility. The goal of the research was the development of a miniature, endoscopically implantable device to a submucosal pocket. The implantable device is a fully customized electronic package which was specifically designed for the purpose of experiments in the submucosa. The device is equipped with a lithium-ion battery which can be recharged wirelessl

Wearable sensors: modalities, challenges, and prospects.

Wearable sensors have recently seen a large increase in both research and commercialization. However, success in wearable sensors has been a mix of both progress and setbacks. Most of commercial progress has been in smart adaptation of existing mechanical, electrical and optical methods of measuring the body. This adaptation has involved innovations in how to miniaturize sensing technologies, how to make them conformal and flexible, and in the development of companion software that increases the value of the measured data. However, chemical sensing modalities have experienced greater challenge

Technological aided assessment of the acutely ill patient - The case of postoperative complications.

Surgical interventions come with complications and highly reported mortality after major surgery. The mortality may be a result of delayed detection of severe complications due to lower monitoring frequency in the general wards. Several studies have shown that continuous monitoring is superior to the manually intermittent recorded monitoring in terms of detecting abnormal physiological signs. Hopefully improved observations may result in earlier detection and clinical intervention. This narrative review will describe current monitoring possibilities for postoperative patients and how it may pr

Lead or be led: an update on leadless cardiac devices for general physicians.

Implantable cardiac devices have an increasingly important role. Pacemakers remain the only effective treatment for symptomatic bradycardia; cardiac resynchronisation therapy is a proven treatment for heart failure; and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) are superior to medical therapy in prevention of sudden cardiac death. Our ageing population has led to a rising number of device implants. Physicians in all specialties increasingly encounter patients with cardiac devices and require an understanding of their capabilities and functions. The rising prevalence of implantable devices

An autoclavable wireless palpation instrument for minimally invasive surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery prevents surgeons from manually palpating organs to locate subsurface tumors and other structures. One solution is to use ultrasound; however, it is not always reliable. Various minimally invasive surgery instruments that provide tactile feedback have been proposed to augment ultrasound sensing for tumor localization; however, current designs have limitations such as cumbersome wiring, difficulty in manipulation, lack of sterilizability and high cost. This paper presents a novel, autoclavable, wireless, hand-held palpation instrument that uses a custom, low-cost, dis

Data Driven Computer Simulation to Analyse an ECG Limb Lead System Used in Connected Health Environments.

BACKGROUND: Recently under the Connected Health initiative, researchers and small-medium engineering companies have developed Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring devices that incorporate non-standard limb electrode positions, which we have named the Central Einthoven (CE) configuration. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study is to compare ECG signals recorded from the CE configuration with those recorded from the recommended Mason-Likar (ML) configuration. METHODS: This study involved extracting two different sets of ECG limb leads from each patient to compare the difference in the sign

X-optogenetic inhibition of VTA GABA neurons for wireless deep-brain stimulation and suppression of scratching behavior in freely moving mice.

X-ray-mediated wireless optogenetic neurostimulation (X-optogenetics) at any brain depth is a powerful technology for neuroscience studies and neurological disorder treatment. However, there is still a lack of effective and safe X-optogenetic neural inhibition technology because of the need for a precise spectral match degree between scintillator and inhibitory opsins and sufficient light intensity emitted from X-ray-induced scintillation. Here, we report an efficient X-optogenetic neural inhibition technology that achieves both wireless deep-brain stimulation and rapid behavioral suppression

Video capsule endoscopy: what is the future?

Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) that was launched 10 years ago has become a first-line procedure for examining the small bowel, especially in the case of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. Other major indications include Crohn disease (CD), celiac disease, and intestinal polyposis syndrome. In the case of small bowel diseases, the use of VCE must be integrated in a global diagnostic and therapeutic approach. More recently, wireless endoscopy has been adapted for examining the colon, opening up larger perspectives for colorectal cancer screening or colon examination. Technologic modifications of

Remote wireless vital signs monitoring on the ward for early detection of deteriorating patients: A case series.

INTRODUCTION: Remote wireless monitoring is a new technology that allows the continuous recording of ward patients' vital signs, supporting nurses by measuring vital signs frequently and accurately. A case series is presented to illustrate how these systems might contribute to improved patient surveillance. METHODS AND RESULTS: Five hospitals in three European countries installed a remote wireless vital signs monitoring system on medical or surgical wards. Heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature were measured by the system every 2 min. Four cases of (paroxysmal) atrial fibrillation are p

Tailor-made metasurfaces for scattering control.

Reducing electromagnetic scattering from an object has long been a challenge, inspiring efforts across disciplines such as materials science and electromagnetic theory. The pursuit of electromagnetic cloaking has significantly advanced metamaterials research, yet broadband conformal concealment of geometrically complex bodies remains an open challenge, particularly when the target size is comparable to or only a few times larger than the wavelength. Here, we introduce the concept of tailored metasurfaces: evolutionarily designed, aperiodic structures optimized to suppress scattering from arbit

Impact of Li-Ion Battery on System's Overall Impedance and Received Signal Strength for Power Line Communication (PLC).

In anticipation of the hybrid utilisation of the radio frequency (RF) wireless transceiver technology embedded in future smart Li-ion battery cells to deliver hybrid links based on power line communication (PLC) and wireless connections, herein we present an empirical high-frequency investigation of the direct current (DC) bus. The focus is to determine, via statistical tools including correlation coefficient (CC), root mean squared error (RMSE) and feature selective validation (FSV) method, the impedance and signal change impact on a possible communication link when fully charged cells are pr

Capsule endoscopy: new technology, old complication.

Wireless capsule endoscopy is a new tool in the armamentarium of the gastroenterologist to evaluate the small bowel non-invasively. It allows improved diagnostic yield with low complication rates relative to traditional modalities. But this new technology has its own set of complications, some which can lead to significant morbidity. Here, we present a case of complete small bowel obstruction following a capsule endoscopy. A 65-year-old female with a long standing history of anemia and obscure gastrointestinal bleed presented to the Emergency Department 72 hours after a wireless capsule endosc

Kinematics of gait: new method for angle estimation based on accelerometers.

A new method for estimation of angles of leg segments and joints, which uses accelerometer arrays attached to body segments, is described. An array consists of two accelerometers mounted on a rigid rod. The absolute angle of each body segment was determined by band pass filtering of the differences between signals from parallel axes from two accelerometers mounted on the same rod. Joint angles were evaluated by subtracting absolute angles of the neighboring segments. This method eliminates the need for double integration as well as the drift typical for double integration. The efficiency of th

Soft sonocapacitor with topologically integrated piezodielectric nanospheres enables wireless epidural closed-loop neuromodulation.

Capacitively coupled electrical stimulation modulates neuronal activity through reversible charging and without charge transfer reactions. This represents a promising and safe neuromodulation scheme but achieving wireless and high capacitive charge density injection remains challenging. Here, we developed a topological fibrous-architecture sonocapacitor (SonoCap) that assembled from piezoelectric-dielectric composite nanosphere (UCapT) and two-dimensional cellulose. UCapT features a unique piezoelectric core-hollow cavity-dielectric cage structure that can efficiently couples ultrasound excita

Wireless Electromagnetic Generation of miRNA Sponges and Nerve Stimulation by an Adaptable Electrical Scaffold for Repair of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Bioelectronic transduction and microRNA (miRNA) regulation play crucial roles in shaping neuronal cell fate and supporting brain repair. However, clinical progress remains limited due to the lack of tools to perform spatiotemporal regulation of neuronal electrical activity and nonviral gene regulation in vivo. In this study, an adaptable electronic scaffold (AES) that functions both as an antenna and gene transfection agent was developed for neuron miRNA modulation in traumatic brain injury (TBI). The intrinsic properties of AES alleviate inflammation and glial scarring after TBI by suppressin

Wireless knee joint monitoring using biodegradable single-ended pressure sensor in osteoarthritis management.

Knee joint loading regulates cartilage regeneration and degeneration, influencing both healing and osteoarthritis (OA) progression. Although defining the optimal range of loading is essential, in vivo measurement remains challenging because current nonbiodegradable sensors require removal surgeries, and computational models provide only indirect estimates. Here, we report a fully biodegradable, implantable piezoelectric pressure sensor composed of biocompatible materials and designed with a single-ended configuration, consisting of only one electrode. This configuration maintained stable perfo

Reflux Testing: Wireless pH, Impedance-pH, and Mucosal Impedance.

Reflux-like symptoms are common; however, not always due to gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and thus objective testing for GERD is critical, particularly prior to long-term or invasive therapy. In the absence of Los Angeles Grades B, C, or D esophagitis on upper endoscopy, ambulatory reflux monitoring off antisecretory therapy with either a 96-h prolonged wireless reflux monitoring or 24-h pH-impedance is recommended. Mucosal impedance testing is an emerging adjunct technology to assess esophageal mucosal integrity. These testing modalities can help establish the presence or absence of
