In this study, the design and synthesis of novel pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidinone mesoionic derivatives incorporating dithioacetal structures were carried out. Forty two strains of bacteria were isolated from excess activated sludge from petroleum wastewater treatment plant. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (formerly Xanthomonas maltophilia) is a Gram-negative bacillus increasingly associated with serious nosocomial infections. Here, we describe a 30-year-old male patient who developed meningitis associated with this organism after several neurosurgical procedures. A review of the literature revealed only 15 previous reports. Most cases were associated with neurosurgical procedures. Antimicrobial therapy is complicated by multiple drug resistance of the organism, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is the recommended agent for treatment.

Subcutaneous lesions were seen in three of 13 neutropenia patients who had Stenotrophomonas (Xanthomonas) maltophilia bacteraemia. The characteristic clinical presentation resembled leukaemic infiltrates, and were different from deep ulcers or subcutaneous nodules caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The three patients had acute leukaemia and were treated with intensive combination chemotherapy. All had previously been treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, and each patient recovered after proper combination antibiotic treatment given according to sensitivity testing.

Neomycin is coupled on xanthan-a polysaccharide of microbial biosynthesis produced by Xanthomonas campestris-through ionic complexation. The kinetics of neomycin release, in vitro, at pH = 8.2 is studied. A controlled release of neomycin, following a zero order kinetics is observed, regardless of the eluent flow. Neomycin complexed on xanthan, administered in a unique daily dose to patients suffering from dysentery in the 100 cases taken in study, has shown a high clinical efficiency as compared with the treatments with ampicillin or furazolidone, administered for 5-10 days or longer.
