We retrospectively evaluated the association between risk factors and acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) among 182 beta thalassemia patients who received 73 peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) or 109 bone marrow transplants from HLA-identical siblings between 1991 and 2003. The relationship between the severity of aGVHD was examined for the following factors: HLA antigens, age, sex, ABO mismatch, sex mismatch (between recipient and donor), thalassemia class, graft source, transplant cell dose, CD3+ cell dose, conditioning regimen, GVHD prophylaxis, neutrophil engraftment duration, and blood

Successful ABO-mismatched renal transplantation (RT) (blood group A2 donor to blood group B or O recipient) has occurred in adults in the setting of a low titer (< or =4) natural isoagglutinin (anti-A) level in the recipient of the mismatched organ. Similar experiences have rarely occurred in children. Between 1986-1996, 11 pediatric patients (6 male and 5 female) received 11 ABO-mismatched kidneys [7 cadaveric (CAD) and 4 living related donor (LRD)]. There were 8 O recipients/A2 donor pairs, 2 B recipients/A2 donor pairs and 1 B recipient/A2B donor pair. Recipient age at the time of RT was 14

OBJECTIVE: Blood type A antigen on porcine aortic bioprostheses might initiate an immune reaction leading to an increased frequency of structural valve deterioration in patients with blood type B or O. The aim was to analyse the association between ABO blood type and porcine bioprosthetic aortic valve degeneration.
DESIGN: Observational nationwide cohort study.
SETTING: Swedish population-based study.
PARTICIPANTS: Adult patients (n=3417) who underwent surgical aortic valve replacement and received porcine bioprosthetic aortic valves between 1995 and 2012 from the Swedish Web system for Enh

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2016eng
Simultaneous splenectomy (SPX) is preferentially performed in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) to modulate portal flow; increase postoperative platelet count, especially among those with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection; and modulate the immunologic status in ABO-incompatible cases. The negative effects of the procedure, however, are not well established. Records of 395 LDLTs performed at our institution, including 169 (42.8%) patients with simultaneous SPX and 226 (57.2%) patients with spleen preservation, were reviewed with special reference to the simultaneous SPX cases. BACKGROUND: Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a major cause of morbimortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Minor ABO incompatibility has been associated with an increased risk of GVHD. We analyzed the impact of ABO matching on patient outcome after peripheral blood, reduced-intensity allo-HSCT in an outpatient setting, and its relationship with GVHD.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Data of 121 patients were included. All patients received allo-HSCT from HLA-identical siblings as outpatients using a reduced-intensity conditioning regimen. Influence of ABO m

Jaundice caused by hemolysis continues to challenge practitioners caring for infants in the NICU. Bilirubin levels can rise quickly in the first days of life, and interventions must be prompt to prevent side effects related to hyperbilirubinemia. Conventional treatments such as hydration and phototherapy are common, but new studies suggest that use of intravenous immunoglobin (IVIG) as an additional treatment may prevent the need for exchange transfusion in some babies. This article presents a case study of an infant with blood-type incompatibility treated successfully with multiple doses of I

BACKGROUND: Most studies indicate that ABO incompatibility has no effect on the clinical outcome after allogeneic peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) transplantation (allo-PBPCT). However, it carries additional risks of hemolytic reactions, delayed red blood cell (RBC) engraftment, and pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). Data on these events after reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) regimens are limited, but recent studies have suggested a higher transplant-related mortality (TRM) and morbidity in this setting.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We investigated the impact of ABO-matching on the outcome

Clinical experience with a Sephadex gel filtration test-kit for the evaluation of bilirubin binding affinity of serum in neonatal jaundice is reported. In serial serum specimens from 166 jaundiced neonates the results of the test in most cases were in accord with the independent clinical decision to perform exchange transfusion. In all 9 cases with clinical kernicterus the Sephadex test was strongly positive (very low bilirubin binding affinity of serum). The test was positive at lower bilirubin levels and bilirubin/albumin molar ratios in preterm as compared with term neonates, especially in

BACKGROUND: Hemolysis as a result of donor-recipient minor ABO mismatching is a complication of allogeneic peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) transplantation (PBPCT). The increased B-lymphocyte content of PBPC grafts and immunosuppressive regimens without methotrexate (MTX) may increase incidence and severity of this event.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 93 patients were analyzed after allogeneic PBPCT. In 25 (27%) cases, minor (n=21) or bidirectional (n=4) ABO mismatching was present. Of these, 15 patients received myeloablative and 10 received nonmyeloablative conditioning regime

Introduction Non-metric dental traits (NMDTs) are a fundamental data source in forensic dentistry. Nevertheless, the insufficiency of data regarding the occurrence of these traits has instigated the present research endeavor aimed at ascertaining the prevalence, sexual dimorphism, and extent of inter-trait correlations within the Maharashtrian population of India. The secondary objective was to determine the correlations between NMDTs, dentoskeletal malocclusion, and ABO blood groups. Materials and methods This prospective, observational study included 528 individuals aged 18-30 years with den

A number of ABO grouping, Rh typing, antibody screening, and antibody identification problems are associated with chemicals in blood bank reagents. We describe a newly discovered agglutination phenomenon due to a thimerosal (Merthiolate)-dependent agglutinin found in the serum of a normal blood donor. Thimerosal is used as a preservative in several low-ionic strength reagents. This agglutination phenomenon is detected only in test systems (low-ionic-strength, albumin, saline, ficin treated test cells) in which test cells are incubated in the presence of thimerosal. Agglutination does not occur

Recent insights into the structure-function relationship of IgG, the nature of Fc receptors and their interactions with antibodies, and the cellular mechanisms involved in the immune destruction of IgG-sensitized cells have all contributed to a fuller understanding of the role of Rh antibodies in HDN. As this understanding has increased, so different diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have been developed and evaluated in order either to predict or ameliorate disease severity. The role of Rh antibodies in HDN can be considered in three contexts: maternal anti-D, monoclonal anti-D and prophyl

American journal of transplantation : official journal of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons2016eng
Patients receiving ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplants are treated before and after transplant with combination therapy, such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and therapeutic plasma exchange, to prevent allograft rejection by reducing anti-A and anti-B titers. Although generally considered safe, it is well known that commercial IVIG products contain detectable anti-A and anti-B, which can be associated with hemolysis. Different preparative manufacturing techniques during the production of IVIG affect ABO antibody levels in IVIG preparations; therefore, some manufacturers now use new

ABO incompatibility is the commonest reason for rejection of donors in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). The donor pool could be expanded by 25 % to 35 % if the ABO barrier is overcome. In the absence of pre-conditioning, transplantation across the blood groups is fraught with the almost universal risk of antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) that rapidly leads to graft loss. However, AMR can be prevented by removal of preformed antibodies and reducing their production by B cells. We describe our initial experience of three cases of ABO-incompatible (ABO-i) LDLT: a 42-year-old male, an 8-

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusions usually result in the production of alloantibodies, complicating subsequent transfusions. Many blood group systems, in addition to ABO and Rh, can lead to the production of irregular antibodies in multiple transfused patients.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to standardize a molecular biology methodology for identified some alleles of KEL, FY, JK and DI blood group system; the transfusion efficacy of chronically transfused patients with phenotype-matched blood was also evaluated.
METHODS: A PCR-SSP was developed and validated using Sanger sequencing. The g

The irregular antibodies are other than antibodies from ABO blood group system because of pregnancies and blood transfusions, clinical autoimmune, drug-induced etc. The irregular IgG and/or IgM antibodies emerge and lead to the difficult identification of clinical blood type, difficult matching of blood, hemolytic disease of newborn, hemolytic transfusion reaction, and so on. It is very necessary to screen and identify the irregular antibodies before blood transfusion or antepartum. For some difficult identifying samples, some detections on serological level should be done firstly, combining w

4 patients with severely resorbed maxillae underwent rehabilitation with on-lays of allogeneic femoral head bone grafts, titanium implants (Brånemark System) and fixed prostheses. Donors and recipients were matched according to blood groups (ABO/Rh). Potential immunological responses were monitored by determining autoantibodies in peripheral blood, and inflammatory reactions in the recipient site. Biopsies from the bone graft 6 months after grafting showed vital bone. After a mean observation period of 19.5 months, 22 of 23 implants were osseointegrated. None of the investigated autoantibodies

BACKGROUND: Low-titer group O whole blood (LTO-WB) has recently gained popularity in trauma centers for the acute resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock. However, limited supplies of Rh- product prevent implementation and strain sustainability at many trauma centers. We set out to identify whether Rh+ LTO-WB could be safely substituted for RH- product, regardless of patient's Rh status.
METHODS: Following Institutional Review Board approval, information on all trauma patients receiving prehospital or emergency department transfusion of uncrossed, emergency release LTO-WB (11/17-10/19) were evalua

The Am and Bm phenotypes are characterized by weak expression of the A or B antigens, respectively, by red blood cells with a normal expression by the saliva of secretors. Deletion of the regulatory element in the first intron of the ABO gene and disruption of the GATA motif in the element were found to be responsible. In this study, we identified a novel mutation within the GATA motif (G>C substitution at position c.28 + 5830) in the regulatory element of the A allele that might diminish transcription activity causing the generation of the Am B phenotype.
