Mind the Individual: Physiological Reactions to Long-Term Colored Light Exposure Assessed by SPA-fNIRS (Knisely Award Honorary Lecture).

Colored light exposure (CLE) is a common occurrence in everyday life. In today's modern society, we are increasingly exposed to various sources of colored light, including advertisements, computer and smartphone displays, energy-saving light bulbs, private settings, and street lighting with LEDs. Therefore, the effects of colored light on human physiology are becoming a subject of growing interest to both the research community and society. To gain a deeper understanding of the complex effects of long-term CLE on the human body, we have conducted a series of pioneering studies (with results pu

Privacy, temporal flexibility and connection: how online spaces shape abortion support.

BACKGROUND: Online spaces are increasingly used by people seeking support around sexual and reproductive healthcare and can offer anonymity and flexibility. Relatively little is known about how these spaces are used in relation to abortion. This article explores what informal online spaces (eg, social media and discussion forums) offer to those seeking support around abortion, in the face of increasingly digitalised healthcare, persistent abortion stigma and resource constraints on sexual and reproductive health services. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with individuals who h

Diabetes-related barriers to cancer screening in women with type 2 diabetes: A qualitative interview study.

OBJECTIVES: People with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are more likely to develop breast and bowel cancers. Despite this, cancer screening participation is lower among women with diabetes than among women without diabetes, indicating diabetes-related barriers to screening, but little research has examined this. This study aimed to identify and understand diabetes-related barriers to cancer screening, and potential ways to address these, among women with T2DM. DESIGN: In-depth qualitative interviews. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 25 women with T2DM, aged 50 to 74 years, living in England.

Acceptability and efficacy of a smartphone intervention informed by interpersonal psychotherapy for perinatal mental health: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression is a global health concern linked to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Although evidence-based psychological interventions, such as interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), are effective, women lack access to in-person perinatal care. Smartphone-based interventions may offer scalable support; however, evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating IPT-informed smartphone interventions remains limited. This study assessed the acceptability and efficacy of an IPT-informed smartphone intervention for perinatal mental well-being. METHODS: Participant

The understanding of digital communication experts and oral cancer at-risk persons on oral cancer, their uptake of educational mobile health applications on oral cancer, and their opinions on how a good application of such should look like: findings from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Existing educational mobile health applications (MHAs) on oral cancer are not very effective due to the features they possessed. To create an educational MHA on oral cancer with superior features, this study explored MHA creators (digital communication experts) and persons at risk of oral cancer (potential end-users of educational MHA on oral cancer) on their understanding of oral cancer, their uptake of educational MHAs on oral cancer, and how a good MHA on oral cancer should look like. METHODS: This qualitative study involved four online focus group discussions among seventeen d

Evolution of social contacts patterns in France over the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: results from the SocialCov survey.

BACKGROUND: Non-pharmaceutical measures such as lockdowns, curfews and place closures were implemented in France during 2020-2022 to reduce contacts in the population, to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and reduce COVID-19 healthcare burden. Individuals also changed their behaviours as a response to the pandemic. Here, we present the results of the SocialCov survey that characterise the evolution of contacts in France between December 2020 and May 2022 to better understand the short and long term impact of these interventions on social mixing. METHODS: A questionnaire was advertised over six i

Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction in a Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), such as irritable bowel syndrome, occur at a higher prevalence in adults with cystic fibrosis (CF), compared to the general population. DGBI are associated with impaired quality of life and significant health-system costs. This study aimed to assess the proportion of cwCF with DGBI, compared to non-CF controls. METHODS: Validated for the assessment of DGBI, ROME IV surveys were distributed to cwCF and non-CF controls aged 0-18 years as part of the Evaluating the Alimentary Tracts in Health and Disease (EARTH) observational study. Experiences and perspectives of Australian occupational therapists on environmental sustainability: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change and the unsustainable exploitation of Earth's natural environment pose threats to health and wellbeing. There is growing evidence outlining the potential of occupational therapy to address issues of environmental sustainability and climate change. Research investigating the perspectives and experiences of occupational therapists, particularly those practicing within Australia, is in its infancy. The aim of this research was to explore such perspectives and lived experiences, with a focus on climate change and environmental sustainability. METHODS: This exploratory

Message Evaluation Equivalence in Pre Versus Postproduction Tobacco Education Ads.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's The Real Cost campaigns inform the public about the harms of tobacco use. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has followed a 2-part approach to advertise formative testing to ensure sufficient audience receptivity: preproduction qualitative testing and postproduction quantitative testing. This process provides safeguards for ad performance but course corrections to message selection or development after the ads are already fully produced can be time and resource intensive. This study assesses equivalence in message evaluations between pre

Preferences and predictors driving opioid-involved polysubstance use profiles and trajectories: a prospective cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Polysubstance use (PSU), particularly opioid-involved and stimulant-involved PSU, is a growing issue in the USA. PSU increases the risk of negative health consequences, including infectious diseases, worsening physical and mental health conditions, and overdose-related deaths. These consequences occur in the context of varying health risk behaviours, substance-related preferences, and treatment engagements among people with PSU. To inform improvements in prevention, harm reduction, and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, additional research is needed to comprehensively unders

"I thought if my parents got involved, then they'd make me get better": emerging adults' experiences of support from family and friends during anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Around half of all eating disorder cases start during emerging adulthood (i.e., 18-25 years of age). This is an important time of change in interpersonal relationships, marked by individuation from the family of origin. Interpersonal relationships have long featured in theories of eating disorder maintenance and recovery. Increased understanding of the interplay between eating disorders and changes in the interpersonal domain may be key to improving the efficacy of existing treatments and developing novel interventions for this population group. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to expl

Testing the feasibility of a co-designed intervention, comprising self-managed, home-based, exercise training with embedded behavioural support and compression therapy for people with venous leg ulcers receiving treatment at home (FISCU-II).

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) heal slowly, are painful for patients and are costly for healthcare systems; they also affect patients' quality of life. Previous work suggests that supervised exercise training used in combination with compression therapy may offer clinical benefits. However, a large population of people with VLUs are unable to access such an intervention due to frailty and age. OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of 'FISCU Home' (a co-designed, 12-week home-based self-managed lifestyle programme based on exercise and behaviour support) as an adjunct therapy to compress
