PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the cost-effectiveness of an orthoptic screening program in kindergarten children.
METHODS: An empiric cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted as part of a field study of orthoptic screening. The authors measured the time course of interocular suppression of five normal subjects and eleven patients with amblyopia (strabismic and/or anisometropic). Orthogonal gratings were presented dichoptically for durations that ranged from 10-6000 msec. The so-called "port-holes method" is a bilateral peripherical occlusion. It was used for the treatment of 38 cases of congenital nystagmus; the duration of treatment was 5 years.
