Risk factors of atherogenicity in inherently scorbutic rats (OD rats).

We observed the pathophysiological state of a colony of Wistar rats with a hereditary defect in vitamin C-synthesizing ability (the OD rat) in three kinds of experiments. In experiment 1, OD rats that were not supplemented with L-ascorbic acid (ASA) were killed 36 days after birth. In experiment 2, OD rats that were not supplemented with AsA were killed 63 days after birth. In experiment 3, OD rats that were supplemented with sufficient ASA (100 mg/100 g body weight/day) for 16 days from 47 days after birth were assayed 63 days after birth. From analyses of serum chemistry, platelet aggregabil

The intake of vitamins and minerals by the elderly at home.

In 403 elderly people residing in their own homes a dietary interview was undertaken with special reference to the intakes of vitamins and minerals. The group was randomly selected. The data were compared with the Recommended Dietary Allowances, Joint Nordic Recommendations and the absolute minimal necessary amounts. Intakes of folacin was low in 100% of the interviewed, intakes of cholecalciferol was low in 62% and in 83% intakes of pyridoxine was low as compared to the recommendations. The majority had sufficient amounts of ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, retinol and cobalamin from the

A Case of Scurvy in a Child: An Uncommon but Important Diagnosis to Consider.

Scurvy is a rare disease resulting from a prolonged ascorbic acid deficiency. It commonly affects individuals with low incomes and limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The diagnosis of scurvy can be challenging for clinicians due to the non-specific symptoms, resulting in extensive investigations and a delayed diagnosis. We report the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with symptoms of pallor, bone pain, inability to walk, petechiae, ecchymosis of the lower limbs, irritability, and swollen, bleeding gums. Initially, the symptoms raised suspicions of hematopoietic malignancies, …

Sperm agglutination: Prevalence and contributory factors.

Agglutination is a finding noted in semen analyses (SAs) that often causes confusion as to its significance. While some have attributed agglutination to antisperm antibodies (ASAs), there are other causes as well, such as genital tract infection and ascorbic acid deficiency. Additionally, it is known that patients with ASAs often have risk factors such as a history of scrotal trauma or surgery. Therefore, we sought to determine the prevalence of agglutination in our patient population and correlate it with these risk factors, regardless of the presence/absence of ASAs. A retrospective study wa…

Insufficient Vitamin C Levels among Adults in the United States: Results from the NHANES Surveys, 2003-2006.

Vitamin C, well-established in immune function and a key factor in epigenetic inflammatory modifications, is only obtained through consistent dietary intake. Identifying individuals at risk for Vitamin C insufficiency may guide prevention and treatment, however, national surveillance has not been evaluated in the United States since 2006. A descriptive, cross-sectional secondary analysis was performed utilizing data from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) assessing non-institutionalized adults. Five categories of plasma Vitamin C were delineated: deficienc

The Emerging Role of Vitamin C in the Prevention and Treatment of COVID-19.

Investigation into the role of vitamin C in the prevention and treatment of pneumonia and sepsis has been underway for many decades. This research has laid a strong foundation for translation of these findings into patients with severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Research has indicated that patients with pneumonia and sepsis have low vitamin C status and elevated oxidative stress. Administration of vitamin C to patients with pneumonia can decrease the severity and duration of the disease. Critically ill patients with sepsis require intravenous administration of gram amounts of the vitamin

Gastric juice ascorbic acid is related to Helicobacter pylori infection but not ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Maori and Pacific Island ethnic groups in New Zealand have a high risk for gastric cancer. Low levels of gastric juice ascorbic acid (vitamin C) have been suggested to be a risk factor for gastric cancer. Previous studies have shown that gastric juice ascorbic acid may be independently associated with both ethnicity and Helicobacter pylori infection. This study aimed to examine the interrelationship between H. pylori and ethnicity in New Zealand. METHODS: Gastric juice was collected into 70% perchloric acid preservative and stored at -80 degrees C. Ascorbic acid was analysed by hi

Clinical effects of vitamin C in elderly inpatients with low blood-vitamin-C levels.

The effect of oral vitamin C has been examined in elderly long-stay inpatients known to have low levels of vitamin C in their plasma and leucocytes. 1 g of vitamin C given daily for 28 days was shown to be associated with slight, but significant, clinical improvement and weight-gain when compared with placebo therapy.

Metabolic origin of hypovitaminosis C in acutely hospitalized patients.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have indicated a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis C in acutely hospitalized patients. It is unclear whether hypovitaminosis C in this setting represents deficiency or tissue redistribution of the vitamin as part of the acute-phase response. METHODS: We administered vitamin C for 1 wk to acutely hospitalized, but not critically ill patients with hypovitaminosis C, on the assumption that a large increase in plasma and mononuclear leukocyte vitamin C concentrations, a decrease in metabolic markers of oxidative stress, or an improvement in psychologic mood state would

Estimating ascorbic acid requirements for cigarette smokers.

This analysis of a large, population based, cross-sectional survey demonstrates that the association of smoking with decreased serum ascorbic acid (AA) levels is independent of the reduced AA intake found in smokers. Smokers have a threefold higher incidence of low serum AA levels (< or = 11 mumol/L) which could place them at increased risk for the clinical manifestations of AA deficiency. Smokers not taking vitamin supplements who consumed less than 15 servings weekly of fruits and vegetables were especially prone to have serum AA levels less than 11 mumol/L. An AA intake of > or = 200 mg was

Differences between proline and lysine hydroxylations in their inhibition by zinc or by ascorbate deficiency during collagen synthesis in various cell types.

The addition of Zn2+ inhibited lysine hydroxylation markedly less effectively than it did proline hydroxylation in chick embryo tendon cells, 3T6 fibroblasts and lysyl hydroxylase-deficient Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type VI fibroblasts. With low Zn2+ concentrations, a similar difference was also seen in chick embryo cartilage cells, whereas with high concentrations both hydroxylations were affected to the same extent in this cell type. Ascorbate deficiency likewise had a much less effect on lysine than proline hydroxylation when studied with 3T6 fibroblasts. As these two effectors involve quite d

Cell-mediated immunity in nutritional deficiency.

Dietary deficiencies of specific nutrients profoundly alter cell-mediated immune responses in man and experimental animals. Both moderate and severe deficiencies are associated with significant changes in immunocompetence. Diets with inadequate levels of protein, calories, vitamin A, pyridoxine, biotin and zinc result in loss of thymic cellularity. Secondary to thymic atrophy, the production of thymic hormones critical for the differentiation of T lymphocytes is reduced, especially in protein-calorie malnutrition and zinc deficiency. Confirmation of a T cell maturational defect in nutritional

[Role of vitamins E and C in the development of the malignant process].

The data on the influence of antioxidant vitamins (E and C) on the growth of induced and transplantable tumours in animals and on the development of cancer process in man as well as on the course of chemo- and radiotherapy are analyzed; a degree of vitamin provision of the tumour-bearing organism is discussed. Special attention is paid to optimal doses of the above mentioned vitamins. The necessity of combined application of antioxidant vitamins in cancer therapy is established.

Relationship of Consumption of Meals Including Grain, Fish and Meat, and Vegetable Dishes to the Prevention of Nutrient Deficiency: The INTERMAP Toyama Study.

A Japanese-style diet consists of meals that include grain (shushoku), fish and meat (shusai), and vegetable dishes (fukusai). Little is known about the association of such meals (designated well-balanced meals hereafter) with nutrient intake. We therefore examined the frequency of well-balanced meals required to prevent nutrient deficiency. Participants were Japanese people, ages 40 to 59 y, from Toyama, recruited for INTERMAP, in an international population-based study. Each person provided 4 in-depth 24-h dietary recalls (149 men, 150 women). The prevalence of risk ratios of not meeting the

Micronutrient status and its effect on glycaemic indices in type 2 diabetics with foot ulcer in Ibadan, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrients are required by organisms in trace concentrations sufficient to maintain homeostasis. Deficiency of these elements could result in different medical and metabolic abnormalities. There are limited data on micronutrient status in type 2 diabetics with foot ulcer (DM+FU). Premised on this, this study investigated micronutrient levels of DM+FU and examined their effects on glycaemic indices. METHODS: One hundred and twenty participants, comprising seventy DM+FU and fifty non-diabetic participants (controls) aged 40-60 years, were recruited for the study. Ten millilitres

A dietary survey of older people in Edinburgh.

1. Dietary histories covering 1 week were obtained from 212 men and 263 women, aged 62--90 years, who formed a random sample of the older people living in a defined area of Edinburgh. The histories were validated by 2 d weighed-diet records for 219 of the subjects. 2. Nutrient intakes are given as mean values and standard deviations, and as percentage distributions of intake relative to the recommended intakes of nutrients. Intakes are also related to factors which might affect diet adversely. 3. Mean values obtained suggested that intakes were less than recommended intakes for more nutrients
