The effects of a low (less than 0.04%) BAC on pilot performance were investigated in a series of four experiments in which pilots flew a light aircraft simulator under alcohol and placebo conditions. The mean BACs of subjects when starting and finishing the test sessions were 0.037% and 0.028%, respectively. Two of the experiments involved demanding flight tasks under instrument meteorological conditions: complicated departure, holding, and approach procedures in one case; and VOR-use intersection problems in the other. The other two experiments involved ILS approaches under turbulence, cross

Previous studies have determined a higher rate of altitude-induced decompression sickness (DCS) in women than in men. Women are reportedly at higher risk for developing DCS during menses. A study of menstrual history in women completing altitude chamber training without developing DCS has never been accomplished. The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze menstrual history in these women. Thirteen U.S. Air Force Aerospace Physiology Units participated in a USAF-approved survey for 1 year. After completing altitude chamber flights, data on age, day of menstrual cycle (DMC), birth cont

Treatment of acute motion sickness induced by parabolic flight with a preparation of scopolamine placed in the buccal pouch was investigated. Twenty-one subjects flew aboard a KC-135 aircraft operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) which performed parabolic maneuvers resulting in periods of 0-g, 1-g, and 1.8-g. Each subject flew once with a tablet containing scopolamine and once with a placebo in a random order, crossover design. Signs and symptoms of motion sickness were systematically recorded during each parabola by an investigator who was blind to the content o

Disconjugate eye torsion in hypo- and hypergravity of parabolic flight was examined in four former astronauts and four previously tested ex-astronauts to replicate an earlier study and to further test the asymmetry hypothesis of otolith function. Results in the new subjects supported the asymmetry hypothesis and confirmed previous findings that those with low scores of torsional disconjugacy on the KC-135 did not suffer space motion sickness in their prior Shuttle missions while those with high scores did. Tilting subjects with high disconjugacy scores slightly to one side and the other failed

Five mobile offshore drilling unit disasters--Alexander L. Kielland, Ocean Ranger, Vinland, Ocean Odyssey, and Rowan Gorilla I--were studied to assess the degree to which seasickness occurs and endangers the lives of occupants of totally-enclosed motor-propelled survival craft (TEMPSC). Thousands of other peacetime marine incidents were reviewed and a literature search was conducted to assess the same seasickness problem. The one reported death in the Vinland abandonment appears to be the only one that could be associated, even remotely, with seasickness. It cannot be established whether or no

In order to know the relationship between motion sickness and equilibrium ataxia, we performed Graybiel's ataxia test battery on 10 normal subjects: 1) before donning goggles which reversed the optical image horizontally and vertically; 2) while wearing the goggles and walking; and 3) after walking as long as possible up to 90 min. Horizontal reversal of vision resulted in a statistically significant decrease in the score for all the closed-eyes tests and one open-eyes test performed during walking and after walking, respectively. In contrast, walking while wearing vertical reversing goggles p

The blood levels of histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in 10 subjects, with or without administration of the transdermal therapeutic system of scopolamine (TTS-S), were measured following motion sickness (MS) induced by Coriolis stimulation. Histamine and 5-HT were assayed using the fluorometric method. The results demonstrated that the blood levels of histamine increased significantly following MS and were even higher in the subjects using TTS-S, but we found neither significant changes in the blood levels of 5-HT following MS nor any effect of TTS-S on it. The results suggest that hist

Airsickness is a significant obstacle in the training of some student pilots. When conventional therapy fails, desensitization therapy may be indicated. Using experience gained by the RAF and USAF, the Canadian Forces (CF) began such a program in 1981. This paper reports program results from 1981-1991. Following subject identification, treatment consists of three phases: biofeedback relaxation therapy, ground-based desensitization training and in-flight desensitization therapy with a pilot-flight surgeon. Employing a definition of cure used by the RAF, success was compared with that of the RAF

Twelve Navy H-3 helicopter aircrew members were monitored (heart rate, skin and rectal temperatures) in both microclimate cooling (ice) vest and non-vest conditions during at-sea operations in the high heat environment of the Persian Gulf. During all flights and flight phases, ambient dry bulb temperatures ranged from 31.0 degrees C (in-flight) to 48.6 degrees C (hover). Heart rate was greatest during hover and on-deck (range: 89.9 to 145.0 beats/min) without an ice vest, yet was significantly reduced with ice (range: 79.7 to 86.0 beats/min) (p less than 0.05). Rectal temperature was not found

A portable surface-integrated EMG (IEMG) device was used to investigate the strain caused by low and high Gz forces and head movements on the cervical erector spinae muscles during flight missions. The obtained IEMG activities were normalized by comparing them with activities representing maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the cervical erector spinae muscles in each subject. The muscular strain increased with increasing Gz forces and head movements. Under +7.0 Gz the mean muscular strain was 5.9-fold compared with +1.0 Gz and was 37.9% of the MVC. In some individuals, the muscular toleranc

An accepted method for measuring the responsiveness of the carotid-cardiac baroreflex to arterial pressure changes is to artificially stimulate the baroreceptors in the neck with a pressurized neck chamber. Nine physiological responses to this type of stimulation are quantified and used as indicators of the baroreflex response function. Thirty male humans between the ages of 27 and 46 underwent the carotid-cardiac baroreflex test. The data for the nine response parameters were analyzed by principle component factor analysis. The results indicated that 92.5% of the total variance across all nin

The cardiovascular function is one of the main functions disturbed by microgravity. It is particularly affected by the astronaut's return to Earth, where one of the symptoms of the cardiovascular adaptation syndrome is orthostatic hypotension; the clinical consequence can be presyncopal state or a syncope. Lower body negative pressure (LBNP) is intended to stimulate the venous system of the lower limbs. Studies performed in the U.S. have shown that LBNP constitutes an efficient countermeasure, but this approach is impractical because 4 to 6 h/d of application are required. Five volunteers took

Between 1959 and 1987, the psychiatric evaluation of astronaut candidates evolved from a 30-h intensive examination evaluating applicants for psychopathology, and studying their performance under stress, to a 2-h clinical interview whose structure and contents were determined by the individual examiner. Evaluations done during these years applied both psychiatric (or, "select-out") criteria and psychological (or, "select-in") criteria. In an attempt to more rigorously define the psychiatric, "select-out" component, a standardized, semi-structured clinical interview was developed to identify th

We evaluated the combined effects of reduced O2 (12%) and graded ergometer exercise (10, 70, and 140 W) on the performance of a psychomotor task. Six men participated in two test sessions each. Each session began with the baseline data (air) and finished with exposure data (12% or 21%, random, unidentified). The gas mixtures were air (control condition) and 12% O2-balance N2 (12% O2 condition). The psychomotor task score was degraded during the 140 W work rate of the 12% O2 condition (p less than 0.05). Reductions of the SaO2 (p less than 0.05) at each work rate proved that hypoxia existed dur

In-flight incapacitation of a fully trained crewmember due to a serious underlying medical condition is a rather infrequent event. In order to delineate the extent and nature of the incapacitation problem we reviewed the data base at the Air Force Safety and Inspection Center for all incidents coded for incapacitation, preexisting disease, or other acute illnesses occurring during the 10 years between 1978 and 1987. During this period there were 23 in-flight incidents of incapacitation due to significant underlying medical conditions. In 11 of the incidents the incapacitation resulted in a los

The medical files were reviewed of all Canadian Forces pilots in whom a permanent change in flying category was recommended during the period 1 January 1978 through 31 December 1987. In an average pilot population of 2,697 pilots, 60 permanent groundings (2.2 per thousand) and 209 permanent operational flying restrictions (7.7 per thousand) were assigned among 258 pilots. Coronary heart disease was the most common cause for permanent grounding (25% of total), followed by neurologic disorders including migraine (22% of total), other cardiovascular disorders, including mitral valve prolapse and

This case report on primary pulmonary coccidioidomycosis outlines a typical presentation in an individual at high risk and the pitfalls that can occur to practitioners unfamiliar with this disease. The patient was a 36-year-old black male who presented with an initial abnormal chest X-ray and who eventually was correctly diagnosed and improved on a 30-day course of ketoconazole. This patient showed no signs of dissemination.

Head and body movements made in microgravity tend to bring on symptoms of motion sickness. Such head movements, relative to comparable ones made on Earth, are accompanied by unusual combinations of semicircular canal and otolith activity owing to the unloading of the otoliths in OG. Head movements also bring on symptoms of motion sickness during exposure to visual inversion (or reversal) on Earth because the vestibulo-ocular reflex is rendered anti-compensatory. Here, we present evidence that susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to visual inversion is decreased in a 0G relative to

In parabolic flight experiments, we have found post-rotary nystagmus to be differentially suppressed in free fall (OG) and in a high gravitoinertial force (1.8G) background relative to 1G. In addition, the influence of postrotary head movements on nystagmus suppression was found to be contingent on G level. The nature of this pattern indicated a G-dependency of the velocity storage and dumping mechanisms. Here, we have rank-correlated susceptibility to motion sickness during head movements in OG and 1.8G with the following: a) the decay time constant of the slow phase velocity of post-rotary n

Fifty-two subjects were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum. Ten of these subjects who became motion sick during the first session completed two additional sessions. Subjects' symptoms of motion sickness, perception of self-motion, electrogastrograms (EGGs), heart rate, mean successive differences of R-R intervals (RRI), and skin conductance were recorded for each session. The results from the first session indicated that the development of motion sickness was accompanied by increased EGG 4-9 cpm activity (gastric tachyarrhythmia), decreased mean successive differences of RRI, increased ski
