The bacterial capsule of Bacillus anthracis seen in the spleen of a cow which had died of anthrax was studied electron microscopically. It was visible around bacteria which had been fixed in a ruthenium red-containing fixative. It was composed of electron-dense spikes and extended outwards from the bacterial surface. It was not found around bacteria which had been treated with a fixative devoid of ruthenium red. Bacteria were seen scattered among blood cells. They were not phagocytized by neutrophils or macrophages.

Monoclonal antibodies to Haemophilus influenzae type b were produced by fusing splenic lymphocytes from immunized C57BL/6 mice with the mouse myeloma line P3-X63-Ag8.653. The antibody produced by one hybridoma (5M1H9) bound the capsular polysaccharide, as determined by a radiolabeled antigen-binding assay. In order to evaluate risk factors for adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder ("frozen shoulder') a prospective study was carried out in neurosurgical patients, in whom there is a high incidence of capsulitis. Ninety-nine patients were admitted into the study, most of whom had surgical treatment for sub-arachnoid haemorrhage. The reaction of X-rays on the incapsulation of subcutaneous implantation of silastic prosthesis and further development of the capsules was studied in an experimental investigation on the basis of 14 rabbits. An influence of X-rays on type and thickness of the capsule as well as constrictive fibrosis was not ascertained. On account of our histological investigations we may say that the cause for a fibrous capsule formation is a similar process which causes Dupuytren's contracture.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) significantly hinders the accurate assessment of glaucomatous visual field (VF) impairment. While pattern deviation (PD) is theoretically intended to correct for generalized sensitivity loss, its accuracy in eyes with PCO remains unverified. This study evaluated 52 eyes of 46 patients with open-angle glaucoma and PCO. Small bowel neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are uncommon and typically present with nonspecific symptoms, making diagnosis challenging. We report a 56-year-old man who presented with recurrent hematochezia and severe anemia. Extensive evaluation with esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, computed tomography angiography, and tagged red blood cell scan were nondiagnostic.
