Climate-Driven Habitat Redistribution and Conservation Gaps of the Medicinal Fern Sceptridium ternatum in China.

Climate change may redistribute understory medicinal plants, but national predictions are useful when model uncertainty and field constraints are explicit. We aimed to identify the current and future suitable habitat of Sceptridium ternatum and translate predictions into survey and conservation priorities. We compiled 187 occurrences, screened 104 candidate predictors to 9, calibrated MaxEnt with kuenm, and evaluated it using partial ROC, omission rate, AICc, random and spatial-block cross-validation, and the Boyce index. Future suitability was projected with two GCMs under SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8

Stability and resilience trajectories of stream ecosystems after two major hurricanes.

Understanding how natural ecosystems respond to disturbance events is a major goal in ecology, especially as extreme climatic events become more frequent with climate change. We evaluated the effects of hurricanes Irma and María on multiple aspects of stream ecosystem stability (i.e. resistance, engineering resilience, recovery and temporal stability) over 5 years post-disturbance. We fitted eight models to analyse recovery trajectories and used a Bayesian structural equation model to examine interactions among variables during recovery. Most variables exhibited low resistance, with recovery r

Remote Sensing-Derived Environmental Variables to Estimate Transmission Risk and Predict Malaria Cases in Argentina: A Pre-Certification Study (1986-2005).

Early warning systems rely on statistical prediction models, with environmental risks and remote sensing data serving as essential sources of information for their development. The present work is focused on the use of remote sensing for the estimation of transmission risk and the prediction of malaria cases in northwest Argentina. This study was conducted in the city of San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, where cases of the disease have been reported from 1986 to 2005. The relationship between reported malaria cases and climatic/environmental variables-including the normalized difference vegetation i

Assessment of meteorological factors and air pollution impact on cardiovascular mortality using random forest analysis 2017 to 2020.

Air pollution, a global health hazard, significantly impacts mortality, cardiovascular health, mental well-being, and overall human health. This study aimed to investigate the impact of air pollution and meteorological factors on cardiovascular mortality rates in Mashhad City, northeastern Iran in 2017-2020. We utilized a Random Forest (RF) model in this study. We gathered daily meteorological data (pressure, humidity, temperature, solar radiation) from 2017 to 2020, pollutant levels (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO), and cardiovascular mortality data from the Health System Registration (Sina). The

Environmental Drivers and Potential Distribution of Schistosoma mansoni Endemic Areas in Ethiopia.

In Ethiopia, human schistosomiasis is caused by two species of schistosome, Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium, with the former being dominant in the country, causing infections of more than 5 million people and more than 37 million at risk of infection. What is more, new transmission foci for S. mansoni have been reported over the past years in the country, raising concerns over the potential impacts of environmental changes (e.g., climate change) on the disease spread. Knowledge on the distribution of schistosomiasis endemic areas and associated drivers is much needed for surveillance an

Microbes increase thermal sensitivity in the mosquito Aedes aegypti, with the potential to change disease distributions.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of many disease-causing viruses, including dengue (DENV), Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. As consequences of climate change, we expect an increase in both global mean temperatures and extreme climatic events. When temperatures fluctuate, mosquito vectors will be increasingly exposed to temperatures beyond their upper thermal limits. Here, we examine how DENV infection alters Ae. aegypti thermotolerance by using a high-throughput physiological 'knockdown' assay modeled on studies in Drosophila. Such laboratory measures of thermal tolerance h

Spatial and temporal patterns of dengue incidence in Bhutan: a Bayesian analysis.

Dengue is an important emerging vector-borne disease in Bhutan. This study aimed to quantify the spatial and temporal patterns of dengue and their relationship to environmental factors in dengue-affected areas at the sub-district level. A multivariate zero-inflated Poisson regression model was developed using a Bayesian framework with spatial and spatiotemporal random effects modelled using a conditional autoregressive prior structure. The posterior parameters were estimated using Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation with Gibbs sampling. A total of 708 dengue cases were notified throug

Identifying and Predicting the Geographical Distribution Patterns of Oncomelania hupensis.

Schistosomiasis is a snail-borne parasitic disease endemic to the tropics and subtropics, whose distribution depends on snail prevalence as determined by climatic and environmental factors. Here, dynamic spatial and temporal patterns of Oncomelania hupensis distributions were quantified using general statistics, global Moran's I, and standard deviation ellipses, with Maxent modeling used to predict the distribution of habitat areas suitable for this snail in Gong'an County, a severely affected region of Jianghan Plain, China, based on annual average temperature, humidity of the climate, soil t

The ecological niche of Dermacentor marginatus in Germany.

The ixodid tick Dermacentor marginatus (Sulzer, 1776) is endemic throughout southern Europe in the range of 33-51 (°) N latitude. In Germany, however, D. marginatus was exclusively reported in the Rhine valley and adjacent areas. Its northern distribution limit near Giessen is located at the coordinates 8.32 (°) E/50.65 (°) N. Particularly with regard to the causative agents of rickettsioses, tularemia, and Q fever, the observed locations as well as the potential distribution of the vector D. marginatus in Germany are of special interest. Applying a dataset of 118 georeferenced tick locations,

The incidence of West Nile disease in Russia in relation to climatic and environmental factors.

Since 1999, human cases of West Nile fever/neuroinvasive disease (WND) have been reported annually in Russia. The highest incidence has been recorded in three provinces of southern European Russia (Volgograd, Astrakhan and Rostov Provinces), yet in 2010-2012 the distribution of human cases expanded northwards considerably. From year to year, the number of WND cases varied widely, with major WND outbreaks in 1999, 2007, 2010, and 2012. The present study was aimed at identifying the most important climatic and environmental factors potentially affecting WND incidence in the three above-mentioned

Converging crises and maternal and child health: colonialism, extreme weather, and COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is a growing threat to human health, particularly in regions facing overlapping environmental hazards and social inequities. Puerto Rico-a U.S. territory with a colonial history-offers a unique case for examining how multiple disasters, including Hurricane Maria, ongoing earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic, interact with structural vulnerabilities to affect maternal and child health. Despite increasing attention to climate-related health outcomes, little is known about the reproductive health impacts of cumulative disaster exposure in colonial contexts. METHODS:

Factors Influencing Distribution of Coccidioides immitis in Soil, Washington State, 2016.

Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii are causative agents of Valley fever, a serious fungal disease endemic to regions with hot, arid climate in the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. The environmental niche of Coccidioides spp. is not well defined, and it remains unknown whether these fungi are primarily associated with rodents or grow as saprotrophs in soil. To better understand the environmental reservoir of these pathogens, we used a systematic soil sampling approach, quantitative PCR (qPCR), culture, whole-genome sequencing, and soil chemical analysis to iden

Seasonal and geographical distribution of bacillary dysentery (shigellosis) and associated climate risk factors in Kon Tam Province in Vietnam from 1999 to 2013.

BACKGROUND: Bacillary dysentery (BD) is an acute bacterial infection of the intestine caused by Shigella spp., with clinical symptoms ranging from fever to bloody diarrhoea to abdominal cramps to tenesmus. In Vietnam, enteric bacterial pathogens are an important cause of diarrhoea and most cases in children under 5 years of age are due to Shigella strains. The serogroups S. flexneri and S. sonnei are considered to be the most common. The main objective of this study was to, for the first time, assess the seasonal patterns and geographic distribution of BD in Vietnam, and to determine the clima

Predicted altitudinal shifts and reduced spatial distribution of Leishmania infantum vector species under climate change scenarios in Colombia.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by the trypanosomatid parasite Leishmania infantum (=Leishmania chagasi), and is epidemiologically relevant due to its wide geographic distribution, the number of annual cases reported and the increase in its co-infection with HIV. Two vector species have been incriminated in the Americas: Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia evansi. In Colombia, L. longipalpis is distributed along the Magdalena River Valley while L. evansi is only found in the northern part of the Country. Regarding the epidemiology of the disease, in Colombia the incidence of VL has decre

Childhood facial emotion recognition: Associations with the parental emotional environment and child emotional and behavioral problems.

Impairments in negative facial emotion recognition (FER) are widely reported in children with internalizing and externalizing problems; however, it remains unclear whether these impairments reflect response biases or reduced discrimination accuracy. Children's emotion socialization is informed by the emotional climate at home, yet parental mental health and Expressed Emotion (EE) are rarely examined together in relation to child FER. This study examined associations between parental mental health, EE, the severity of child internalizing and externalizing problems, and children's recognition of
