Speech-based machine learning for detecting neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's disease.

BackgroundNeuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), yet their detection relies on subjective assessments. Speech features offer a promising objective biomarker for NPS, reflecting emotional and cognitive states. However, existing studies are limited in terms of scale and duration.ObjectiveThis study aims to characterize acoustic features associated with NPS in early cognitive decline using Automated Assessment Model-Mini-Mental State Examination framework, and to evaluate machine learning classifiers for identifying indicators o

The use of enhanced intrinsic feedback for motor learning in stroke survivors: Clinical trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Stroke can lead to lasting sensorimotor deficits of the upper limb (UL) persisting into the chronic phase despite intensive rehabilitation. A major impairment of reaching after stroke is a decreased range of active elbow extension, which in turn leads to the use of compensatory movements. Retraining movement patterns relies on cognition and motor learning principles. Implicit learning may lead to better outcomes than explicit learning. Error augmentation (EA) is a feedback modality based on implicit learning resulting in improved precision and speed of UL reaching movements in peop

Adapting Cognitive Remediation Group Therapy Online: Focus Groups with People Aging with HIV.

Cognitive health is a significant concern for people aging with HIV/AIDS. Psychosocial group therapies may help people aging with HIV who experience cognitive challenges cope with their symptoms. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed in-person group therapies need adaptation for technology-mediated delivery. Peer-led focus groups discussed adapting cognitive remediation group therapy (CRGT) as an online intervention. CRGT combines mindfulness-based stress reduction and brain training activities. Purposive sampling recruited people aging with HIV (40+) who self-identified cognitive concerns and reside

Social phobia: individual response patterns and the effects of behavioral and cognitive interventions.

In the present study, the role of individual response patterns in the treatment of social phobic patients was investigated. Seventy-four patients were diagnosed as social phobics. On the basis of extreme scores on a behavioral test (the Simulated Social Interaction Test) and on a cognitive measure (the Rational Behavior Inventory), the response patterns of 39 patients were analyzed, and the patients themselves were classified as either 'behavioral reactors' or 'cognitive reactors'. Half of the patients with each response pattern received a behavioral focused treatment, i.e. social skills train

Exercise training for cardiovascular prevention in patients with cancer.

Patients with cancer usually report limitations of their functional capacity, which may range from subclinical impairment of cardiopulmonary exercise reserve to poor quality of life with physical, cognitive, or psychosocial consequences. Exercise training is a potent multi-targeted approach to control pre-existing and new risk factors. Preliminary evidence shows that it is associated with a lower risk of cancer therapy-related cardiotoxicity and increased self-reported well-being in patients with cancer. Current evidence demonstrates that supervised exercise therapy, including high-intensity i

[Effectiveness of neuropsychological training in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)].

Recently published studies on the effects of neuropsychological training in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) reflect our present knowledge about the pathogenesis of the disorder. This review article collects the results of published treatment studies drawn from a MEDLINE search. Because of the restricted number of available studies we considered randomized studies as well as studies with a lower evidence level, including case reports. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the study samples, we restrict our interpretation of the study results to the application of vari

Implementation of an Endoscopy Nurse Training Program to Increase Clinical Competency Compliance.

The endoscopy center is a fast-paced environment where nurses are accountable for patient safety throughout complex, high-risk procedures. Fully competent endoscopy nurses (ENs) have the potential to prevent procedural complications, decrease patient wait times and procedure duration, decrease cost, and help detect colon cancer. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to effective and comprehensive training. ENs are often expected to be competent in working with new equipment or procedures without adequate training. EN training is complicated by high staff turnover and frequent advances in endo

Fallacious reasoning and complexity as root causes of clinical inertia.

BACKGROUND: The quality gap and clinical inertia are stubborn problems that are prevalent, but difficult to explain. We puzzle why conscientious practitioners, who are keenly aware of appropriate evidence based treatments, avoid initiating or intensifying treatments. This has caused some to question that there may be hidden causes for these errors in the planning of chronic care. METHODOLOGY: A timely clue enabled the author to recognize his flawed reasoning when planning the care of two elderly women sustaining hip fracture. The sudden awareness of planning error motivated a study of the und

Reading performance is enhanced by visual texture discrimination training in Chinese-speaking children with developmental dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: High order cognitive processing and learning, such as reading, interact with lower-level sensory processing and learning. Previous studies have reported that visual perceptual training enlarges visual span and, consequently, improves reading speed in young and old people with amblyopia. Recently, a visual perceptual training study in Chinese-speaking children with dyslexia found that the visual texture discrimination thresholds of these children in visual perceptual training significantly correlated with their performance in Chinese character recognition, suggesting that deficits i

Early Alterations of Motor Learning and Corticostriatal Network Activity in a Huntington's Disease Mouse Model.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that presents motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms as it progresses. Prior to motor symptoms onset, alterations, and dysfunctions in the corticostriatal projections have been described along with cognitive deficits, but the sequence of early alterations of brain circuits is largely unknown. There is thus a crucial need to identify early alterations that precede symptoms and that could be used as potential early disease markers. Using an HD knock-in mouse model (HdhCAG140/+) that recapitulates the human genetic alterations and that

Automated Medical Diagnosis of Alzheimer´s Disease Using an Efficient Net Convolutional Neural Network.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses an enormous challenge to modern healthcare. Since 2017, researchers have been using deep learning (DL) models for the early detection of AD using neuroimaging biomarkers. In this paper, we implement the EfficietNet-b0 convolutional neural network (CNN) with a novel approach-"fusion of end-to-end and transfer learning"-to classify different stages of AD. 245 T1W MRI scans of cognitively normal (CN) subjects, 229 scans of AD subjects, and 229 scans of subjects with stable mild cognitive impairment (sMCI) were employed. Each scan was preprocessed using a standard pi

Aging Effects on the Neuroplastic Attributes of Multisensory Cortical Networks as Triggered by a Computerized Music Reading Training Intervention.

The constant increase in the graying population is the result of a great expansion of life expectancy. A smaller expansion of healthy cognitive and brain functioning diminishes the gains achieved by longevity. Music training, as a special case of multisensory learning, may induce restorative neuroplasticity in older ages. The current study aimed to explore aging effects on the cortical network supporting multisensory cognition and to define aging effects on the network's neuroplastic attributes. A computer-based music reading protocol was developed and evaluated via electroencephalography meas

Multisession tDCS combined with intrastimulation training improves emotion recognition in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Previous studies indicate that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising emerging treatment option for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its efficacy could be augmented using concurrent training. However, no intrastimulation social cognition training for ASD has been developed so far. The objective of this two-armed, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial is to investigate the effects of tDCS combined with a newly developed intrastimulation social cognition training on adolescents with ASD. Twenty-two male adolescents with ASD were randomly assigned to re

Long-term cognitive decline prediction based on multi-modal data using Multimodal3DSiameseNet: transfer learning from Alzheimer's disease to Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: Monitoring and predicting the cognitive state of subjects with neurodegenerative disorders is crucial to provide appropriate treatment as soon as possible. In this work, we present a machine learning approach using multimodal data (brain MRI and clinical) from two early medical visits, to predict the longer-term cognitive decline of patients. Using transfer learning, our model can be successfully transferred from one neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer's) to another (Parkinson's). METHODS: Our model is a Deep Neural Network with siamese sub-modules dedicated to extracting features f

Deep Learning and Risk Score Classification of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Many neurocognitive and neuropsychological tests are used to classify early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI), late mild cognitive impairment (LMCI), and Alzheimer's disease (AD) from cognitive normal (CN). This can make it challenging for clinicians to make efficient and objective clinical diagnoses. It is possible to reduce the number of variables needed to make a reasonably accurate classification using machine learning. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to develop a deep learning algorithm to identify a few significant neurocognitive tests that can accurately classify these
