Auricular reconstruction in Microtia is a challenging operation with a steep learning curve. In view its rarity attaining a high standard for new surgeons is extremely difficult. This study analyses the first 100 microtia cases looking at complications, technique, pattern of progress and aesthetic outcome. The author performed 100 autologous ear reconstructions for microtia over a period of 4 years utilizing the two stage technique popularised by Nagata and Firmin. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the topical use of autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) to improve success rate of myringoplasty.
METHODS: This study was carried out on 64 patients with large dry central tympanic membrane perforations. Myringoplasty was performed through postauricular approach by underlay graft using conchal perichondrial graft. Patients were classified into two groups: case group included 32 patients who had undergone myringoplasty with use of autologous PRP and control group included 32 patients who had undergone myringoplasty without use of autologous PRP.

BACKGROUND: Surgeons frequently create defects on the ear in the treatment of cutaneous malignancies. Potentially significant complications of second-intention healing on the ear are suppurative and inflammatory chondritis. Consequently, many physicians advocate the use of oral or topical prophylactic antibiotics after auricular surgery.

Tissue engineering has the potential to overcome the limitations of tracheal reconstruction. To tissue-engineer a tracheal cartilage, auricular chondrocytes were encapsulated in a photocurable poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PEG/PCL) hydrogel. We experienced difficulty inserting cuffed inner diameter (ID) 4.5- and 5.0-mm endotracheal tubes (ETTs) in a 5-year-old boy. Postoperative ultrasound investigations showed that the internal transverse width of the cricoid cartilage was 8.0 mm. The maximum outer diameter (OD) of the deflated cuff portion of the cuffed ID 4.5- and 5.0-mm ETTs was 8.5 and 9.6 mm, respectively. The OD of an uncuffed ID 5.5-mm ETT was 7.6 mm; this tube passed the cricoid cartilage.
