Is elastic stable intramedullary nail a good choice for pathological fractures of the proximal femur due to simple bone cyst in pediatric population?

Pathological fracture of the proximal femur represents a challenging situation for orthopedic surgeons because of the high risk of non-union, varus union, and avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of ESINs for the treatment of proximal femoral fractures caused by simple bone cysts (SBCs).All the patients with a diagnosis of proximal femoral fracture secondary to SBC treated with ESINs combined with bone grafting between January 2008 and January 2018, were analyzed retrospectively. In all, 11 patients were included in the Double ESINs group (5.

Recurrent venous thromboembolism patients form clots with lower elastic modulus than those formed by patients with non-recurrent disease.

Essentials Venous thromboembolism (VTE) recurrence leads to decreased clot elastic modulus in plasma. Recurrent VTE is not linked to changes in clot structure, fiber radius, or factor XIII activity. Other plasma components may play a role in VTE recurrence. Prospective studies should resolve if clot stiffness can be used as predictor for recurrent VTE. SUMMARY: Background Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is associated with a high risk of recurrent events after withdrawal of anticoagulation. Objectives To determine the difference in plasma clot mechanical properties between patients with recurrent

In-situ creating elastic lattice OO bonds over semicrystalline yellow TiO2 nanoparticles for significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2 production.

Atomic defects (e.g., Ti3+, oxygen vacancies) have been intenstively investigated for modifying TiO2 in order to reach visible light active photocatalytic H2 production. However, the atomic defects within TiO2 could easily act as photo-generated charge-carrier recombination centers, resulting in relatively low H2 conversion efficiency. In this paper, semicrystalline yellow TiO2 nanoparticles rich of superoxide ions are new synthesized by a simple aqueous solution method. Instead of introducing atomic defects, we show for the first time that catalytic performance can also be significantly impro

A Study of Perturbations in Structure and Elastic Modulus of Bone Microconstituents Using Bimodal Amplitude Modulated-Frequency Modulated Atomic Force Microscopy.

Sepsis-related bone diseases are rarely reported although many ICU patients are diagnosed with bone damage after prolonged immobility. In this work, cortical bone of femurs from Sprague-Dawley rats under mild sepsis condition are investigated by using Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) to study the influence of sepsis on the changes of structure, chemistry, and elastic modulus of bone microconstituents, i.e., collagen fibers and mineral. The results show that there are significant changes on elastic modulus, shape, and chemical composition of collagen fibers 24 h after the sepsis insult, but all

Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) in paediatric femur and tibia shaft fractures: Comparison between titanium and stainless steel nails.

INTRODUCTION: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is currently considered the gold standard in surgical treatment of femur and tibial shaft fractures in school age paediatric patients. Although elastic intramedullary nails are available in both titanium (Ti) and stainless steel (SS) alloy, titanium nails are most commonly used. Nevertheless, there is still contrasting evidence as to whether the use of Ti nails can offer better outcomes in terms of fracture healing and stability over SS nails. The aim of this study was to compare outcomes and complications of Ti and SS ESIN for femur a

Decreased elastic energy storage, not increased material stiffness, characterizes central artery dysfunction in fibulin-5 deficiency independent of sex.

Central artery stiffness has emerged over the past 15 years as a clinically significant indicator of cardiovascular function and initiator of disease. Loss of elastic fiber integrity is one of the primary contributors to increased arterial stiffening in aging, hypertension, and related conditions. Elastic fibers consist of an elastin core and multiple glycoproteins; hence defects in any of these constituents can adversely affect arterial wall mechanics. In this paper, we focus on mechanical consequences of the loss of fibulin-5, an elastin-associated glycoprotein involved in elastogenesis. Spe

Using Spatial Disease Patterns and Patient-Level Characteristics to Describe Prevalence Elastic Behavior in Treatment for Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI).

OBJECTIVE: Individual adherence to a 9-month regimen of isoniazid (9INH) for treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) was hypothesized to reflect a prevalent elastic health behavior pattern, or prevention behavior correlated with relevant disease burden. METHOD: Log-rank tests were used to compare survival functions among raw prevalence tertiles for diseases including TB, diabetes, and obesity. Own and cross-prevalence elasticities were calculated and spatially characterized behavioral response to diseases that may impact TB re-infection and/or re-activation. Discrete choice models w

Elastic stable intramedullary nailing versus Kirschner wire pinning: outcome of severely displaced proximal humeral fractures in juvenile patients.

BACKGROUND: Significantly displaced juvenile proximal humeral fractures (Neer-Horowitz type 3 and 4) usually require reduction and fixation. The most commonly used fixation methods are Kirschner wire (K-wire) pinning or retrograde elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN). However, results comparing the long-term outcome of both methods are absent in the literature. The aim of this study was to provide an outcome comparison of both techniques. METHODS: Included were 40 patients treated between 1998 and 2008 and who had complete records concerning operation time, duration of hospital stay,

Regional changes in elastic fiber organization and transforming growth factor β signaling in aortas from a mouse model of marfan syndrome.

In Marfan Syndrome (MFS), development of thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) is characterized by degeneration of the medial layer of the aorta, including fragmentation and loss of elastic fibers, phenotypic changes in the smooth muscle cells, and an increase in the active form of transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ), which is thought to play a major role in development and progression of the aneurysm. We hypothesized that regional difference in elastic fiber fragmentation contributes to TGFβ activation and hence the localization of aneurysm formation. The fibrillin-1-deficient mgR/mgR mouse model

Increasing stability by pre-bending the nails in elastic stable intramedullary nailing: a biomechanical analysis of a synthetic femoral spiral fracture model.

Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is generally acknowledged to be the treatment of choice for displaced diaphyseal femoral fractures in children over the age of three years, although complication rates of up to 50% are described. Pre-bending the nails is recommended, but there are no published data to support this. Using synthetic bones and a standardised simulated fracture, we performed biomechanical testing to determine the influence on the stability of the fracture of pre-bending the nails before implantation. Standard ESIN was performed on 24 synthetic femoral models with a spir
