Neurobiology of early life stress and visceral pain: translational relevance from animal models to patient care.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies show that females are twice as likely to receive a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) than their male counterparts. Despite evidence pointing to a role for sex hormones in the onset or exacerbation of IBS symptoms, the mechanism by which ovarian hormones may predispose women to develop IBS remains largely undefined. On the other hand, there is a growing body of research showing a correlation between reports of early life stress (ELS) and the diagnosis of IBS. Current treatments available for IBS patients target symptom relief including abdominal pai

Combining land use regression models and fixed site monitoring to reconstruct spatiotemporal variability of NO2 concentrations over a wide geographical area.

The epidemiological research benefits from an accurate characterization of both spatial and temporal variability of exposure to air pollution. This work aims at proposing a method to combine the high spatial resolution of Land Use Regression (LUR) models with the high temporal resolution of fixed site monitoring data, to model spatiotemporal variability of NO2 over a wide geographical area in Northern Italy. We developed seasonal LUR models to reconstruct the spatial distribution of a scaling factor that relates local concentrations to those measured at two reference central sites, one for the

Long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and insulin resistance in children: results from the GINIplus and LISAplus birth cohorts.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Epidemiological studies that have examined associations between long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults are inconsistent, and studies on insulin resistance are scarce. We aimed to assess the association between traffic-related air pollution and insulin resistance in children. METHODS: Fasting blood samples were collected from 397 10-year-old children in two prospective German birth cohort studies. Individual-level exposures to traffic-related air pollutants at the birth address were estimated by land use regression models. Th

Logistic-AFT location-scale mixture regression models with nonsusceptibility for left-truncated and general interval-censored data.

In conventional survival analysis there is an underlying assumption that all study subjects are susceptible to the event. In general, this assumption does not adequately hold when investigating the time to an event other than death. Owing to genetic and/or environmental etiology, study subjects may not be susceptible to the disease. Analyzing nonsusceptibility has become an important topic in biomedical, epidemiological, and sociological research, with recent statistical studies proposing several mixture models for right-censored data in regression analysis. In longitudinal studies, we often e

Human metapneumovirus.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a common pathogen that can cause both upper and lower respiratory tract infections, particularly in children, elderly adults, and immunocompromised hosts. Since its initial identification in 2001, hMPV has been isolated from individuals with acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) in virtually every continent. Serological studies indicate that it has caused human infection since 1958 or earlier. The epidemiology and clinical manifestations of hMPV are similar to those of the human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV). HMPV has a seasonal variation: it circulate

Modelling AIDS reduction strategies.

BACKGROUND: Mathematical models of the AIDS epidemic have not been able to give accurate predictions about the size of the epidemic because it is not possible to obtain sufficiently accurate measurements of the factors that enable HIV transmission. The uncertainties inherent in models of the AIDS epidemic appear to limit their relevance to epidemiologists. However, it is shown here that the uncertainties need not prevent models being used to make reliable decisions about which preventive strategy will be most effective. METHOD: A range of strategies are simulated in a model of the AIDS epidem

A microcomputer method for continuous system simulation in health care.

A method for continuous system simulation in biomedicine and health care intended for use with personal computers is described. The method is applicable to multistate deterministic models and based on the use of standard spreadsheet programs used with such computers. It includes features such as model implementation, changes of simulation parameters, execution of simulation experiments as well as tabular and graphic presentation of simulation results. The method can be used for simulation of systems in epidemiology, health-care organization and other biomedical fields where deterministic model

Simple benchmark for mesothelioma projection for Great Britain.

BACKGROUND: It is of considerable interest to forecast the future burden of mesothelioma mortality. Data on deaths are available, whereas no measure of asbestos exposure is available. METHODS: We compare two Poisson models: a response-only model with an age-cohort specification and a multinomial model with epidemiologically motivated frequencies. RESULTS: The response-only model has 5% higher peak mortality than the dose-response model. The former performs slightly better in out-of-sample comparison. CONCLUSIONS: Mortality is predicted to peak at about 2100 deaths around 2017 among males in

The role of perceived job stress in the relationship between smoking and the development of peptic ulcers.

Although smoking has been considered a risk factor in causing pepticulcers, no study has examined the effects of job stress on the relationship between peptic ulcers and smoking. To establish a link between gastric or duodenal ulcers over two years and a state of perceived job stress, a questionnaire, including questions on demographics, smoking, history of peptic ulcer and perceived job stress was conducted. Follow-up surveys were carried out every six months to accumulate the data for this analysis and the time span of this follow up study was two years. To examine the role of perceived job

Analyses of Sensitivity to the Missing-at-Random Assumption Using Multiple Imputation With Delta Adjustment: Application to a Tuberculosis/HIV Prevalence Survey With Incomplete HIV-Status Data.

Multiple imputation with delta adjustment provides a flexible and transparent means to impute univariate missing data under general missing-not-at-random mechanisms. This facilitates the conduct of analyses assessing sensitivity to the missing-at-random (MAR) assumption. We review the delta-adjustment procedure and demonstrate how it can be used to assess sensitivity to departures from MAR, both when estimating the prevalence of a partially observed outcome and when performing parametric causal mediation analyses with a partially observed mediator. We illustrate the approach using data from 34

Long-term impact of COVID-19-related nonpharmaceutical interventions on tuberculosis: an interrupted time series analysis using Bayesian method.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic may inadvertently influence the epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB). (TB). However, few studies have explored how NPIs impact the long-term epidemiological trends of TB. We aimed to estimate the impact of NPIs implemented against COVID-19 on the medium- and long-term TB epidemics and to forecast the epidemiological trend of TB in Henan. METHODS: We first collected monthly TB case data from January 2013 to September 2022, after which we used the data from January 2013 to December 2021 as a trai

Evaluation of the Webler-Brown model for estimating tetrachloroethylene exposure from vinyl-lined asbestos-cement pipes.

BACKGROUND: From May 1968 through March 1980, vinyl-lined asbestos-cement (VL/AC) water distribution pipes were installed in New England to avoid taste and odor problems associated with asbestos-cement pipes. The vinyl resin was applied to the inner pipe surface in a solution of tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene, PCE). Substantial amounts of PCE remained in the liner and subsequently leached into public drinking water supplies. METHODS: Once aware of the leaching problem and prior to remediation (April-November 1980), Massachusetts regulators collected drinking water samples from VL/AC p

Impact of climate change and social determinants on the spatial and epidemiological distribution of tuberculosis in the state of Pará: a perspective for COP 30.

Tuberculosis is a critical public health challenge in Brazil, with the state of Pará reporting high incidence rates driven by social inequalities, rapid urbanization, and adverse climatic conditions. This study analyzes the epidemiology of tuberculosis in the Metropolitan Region of Belém from 2018 to 2022, correlating social and environmental determinants with the impacts of climate change. Georeferenced data, temporal analysis, and predictive modeling were employed to identify epidemiological patterns and high-incidence clusters. Belém accounted for 60.1% of cases in the region, highlighting

From conceptualising to modelling structural determinants and interventions in HIV transmission dynamics models: a scoping review and methodological framework for evidence-based analyses.

BACKGROUND: Including structural determinants (e.g. criminalisation, stigma, inequitable gender norms) in dynamic HIV transmission models is important to help quantify their population-level impacts and guide implementation of effective interventions that reduce the burden of HIV and inequalities thereof. However, evidence-based modelling of structural determinants is challenging partly due to a limited understanding of their causal pathways and few empirical estimates of their effects on HIV acquisition and transmission. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of dynamic HIV transmission mode

Estimates of epidemiological parameters for H5N1 influenza in humans: a rapid review.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing H5N1 panzootic in mammals has amplified zoonotic pathways to facilitate human infection. Characterising key epidemiological parameters for H5N1 is critical should it become widespread. AIM: To identify and estimate critical epidemiological parameters for H5N1 from past and current outbreaks, and to compare their characteristics with human influenza subtypes and the 2003 Netherlands H7N7 outbreak. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library for systematic reviews reporting parameter estimates from primary data or meta-analyses. To address gaps, we searche

Model development to assess the impact of a preventive treatment with sarolaner and moxidectin on Dirofilaria immitis infection dynamics in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilaria immitis is a mosquito-transmitted filarial parasite causing heartworm disease in dogs. The parasite may cause a significant disease burden to the dog population in high prevalence areas and is mainly managed through prophylactic treatments. METHODS: In this modelling study, the effect of a prophylactic treatment with moxidectin and sarolaner on heartworm disease dynamics was investigated in dogs. A compartmental model was developed to investigate different epidemiological settings considering different values for prevalence and host preference. RESULTS: When the mosqu

Validation of self-report of uterine fibroid diagnosis using a transvaginal ultrasound scan.

Self-report of uterine fibroids (UF) has been used for epidemiologic research in different environments. Given the dearth of studies on the epidemiology of UF in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), it is valuable to evaluate its performance as a potential tool for much needed research on this common neoplasm in SSA women. We conducted a cross-sectional study of self-report of UF compared with transvaginal ultrasound diagnosis (TVUS) among 486 women who are members of the African Collaborative Center for Microbiome and Genomics Research (ACCME) Study Cohort in central Nigeria. We used log-binomial regres
