Hypopigmented scar formation after application of over-the-counter wart and mole removal cream.

Today, there is a consensus that melanocytic nevi must not be removed by means of destructive modalities such as laser or electrodessication, since these procedures preclude histopathologic evaluation and may mask malignant transformation. Hence, a surgical excision with subsequent histopathologic evaluation remains the gold standard. Yet, patients that desire a removal of their melanocytic nevi for primary cosmetic reasons fear the formation of scars after surgical excision on the one hand and the private costs for excision and histopathologic evaluation on the other hand (as expenses for cos

Sunitinib induced pyoderma gangrenosum-like ulcerations.

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a non-infectious neutro?philic skin disease commonly associated with underlying systemic diseases. Histopathological and laboratory diagnostics are unspecific in the majority of the cases and the diagnosis is made in accordance with the clinical picture. Here, we report the case of a 69-year old man with progredient pyoderma gangrenosum-like ulcerations under treatment with sunitinib due to hepatocellular carcinoma. A conventional ulcer therapy did not lead to a regression of the lesions. Solely cessation of sunitinib therapy resulted in an improvement of the ulceration

Bilateral acute depigmentation of the iris first misdiagnosed as acute iridocyclitis.

Acute depigmentation of the iris is a new condition characterized by pigment dispersion in the anterior chamber, depigmentation of the iris stroma, and pigment deposition in the anterior chamber angle. A 33-year-old woman using a topical corticosteroid every 2 h for the treatment of acute iridocyclitis was referred to our clinic to seek another opinion because her symptoms had not improved. An ocular evaluation of the patient revealed pigment precipitates on the corneal endothelium, pigment dispersion in the anterior chamber, symmetrical diffuse depigmentation, granularity of the iris stroma,

Spotted leucoderma after treatment of facial hyperpigmentation on hemodialysis patients employing 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser.

The development of skin hyperpigmentation in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis (HD) have been well documented. However, the cosmetic concern was neither valued seriously nor treated effectively in the past. We report a female case who suffered from facial hyperpigmentation (FH). She was treated by large-spot sized, 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (QSNYL). A significant improvement was found after three treatment sessions at a fluence of 3.9 J/cm(2) with 8-day intervals, but spotted leucoderma developed at the fourth visit. Neither residual FH nor spotted leucoderma s

[Pigmentation change, muscle wasting, and tendon rupture after corticosteroid injection in the Congo].

Unlike complications of systemic corticosteroid therapy that have been extensively described, complications of locoregional corticosteroid injection are not well documented. The purpose of this report is to describe a case involving iatrogenic injury due to local corticosteroid therapy in a 17-year-old woman. Following injection of triamicinolone into the wrist, the patient developed pigmentation change, muscle wasting, and tendon rupture. Injection was performed by a nurse, thus indicating the need for training before delegating this procedure in areas with limited resources.

Prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling for mosaic trisomy 13.

Counseling parents of a fetus with trisomy 13 mosaicism remains difficult because of the phenotypic variability associated with the condition; some patients exhibit the typical phenotype of complete trisomy 13 with neonatal death, while others have few dysmorphic features and prolonged survival. This article provides a comprehensive review of the prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling for mosaic trisomy 13, including confined placental mosaicism 13, mosaic trisomy 13 diagnosed at amniocentesis, and phylloid hypomelanosis in association with mosaic trisomy 13.

Contact depigmentation induced by propyl gallate.

We report a 41-year-old woman who developed contact depigmentation at several body sites after using lipstick, liquid kumkum (a colouring usually made from turmeric or saffron used for social/religious markings), and plastic or rubber slippers (flip-flops). Propyl gallate, a common ingredient to all and a previously undocumented depigmenting agent, was incriminated on patch testing with the Indian standard series.

Treatment of post-burn leucoderma with non-cultured melanocyte-keratinocyte transplantation (MKTP).

INTRODUCTION: Deep burns often result in hypo-pigmentation, referred to as leucoderma which has a similar psychosocial impact on the patients as that of vitiligo. Several tissue grafting methods have been reported to treat post-burn leucoderma. METHODS: A simple method consisting of harvesting a donor skin sample, preparation of an epidermal cell suspension and the transplantation of the cell suspension on to a dermabraded recipient area, was performed in a clean procedure room. No special laboratory set-up was used for the cell separation procedure. Patients were treated with 18 sessions of

Progressive macular hypomelanosis arising in a young African American woman in association with pregnancy and a toxic nodular goiter.

The authors present the case of a 23-year-old woman of French-Caribbean descent who presented with progression of hypopigmented, scaly ovoid macules on her neck, chest, abdomen and back. She was two months pregnant at the time of the onset of the pigmentary change was also simultaneously diagnosed with a toxic nodular goiter of her thyroid gland. Initial fungal culture, KOH and biopsy were positive for fungal hyphae, and she was treated with four weeks of oral ketaconazole and topical selenium sulfide shampoo. As she had continued progression of her hypopigmented lesions after treatment for pi

Cutaneous features associated with microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II.

We present an 18-month-old Pakistani girl who had short stature, craniofacial dysmorphism, and multiple café-au-lait spots. After consultation with the geneticists, microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II was diagnosed (MIM210720). The presence of consanguinity in reported families is suggestive of autosomal recessive inheritance.

Griscelli syndrome: a case report of Reye's syndrome and atopic dermatitis history.

Griscelli syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that results in pigmentary dilution of the skin and the hair (silver hair), with the presence of large clumps of pigment in hair shafts, and an accumulation of melanosomes in melanocytes. Sixty cases of GS have been reported in the literature, but we could find no description of its oro-dental symptoms. Reye's syndrome (RS) is characterized by acute noninflammatory encephalopathy and renal and hepatic failure, while atopic dermatitis (AD) is a skin disorder with an immunologic basis. The aim of this paper is to describe the oro-den

Acral lentiginous melanoma misdiagnosed as verruca plantaris: a case report.

The ratio of acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) to all melanomas among Caucasians is small, although this type of malignant melanocytic neoplasm comprises the majority of melanomas among those who have darker skin tone. Because of frequently atypical clinical morphology, and as a consequence of their relative rarity, ALM is often misdiagnosed. This case demonstrates the disastrous consequences of prolonged treatment of an ALM presumed to be a plantar wart. Pedal lesions require close observation and prompt biopsy when diagnostic uncertainty exists or when therapeutic interventions fail.

Cutis tricolor: congenital hyper- and hypopigmented lesions in a background of normal skin with and without associated systemic features: further expansion of the phenotype.

UNLABELLED: The term cutis tricolor describes the uncommon co-existence of congenital hyper- and hypopigmented macules, in close proximity to each other, in a background of normal skin so far seen in a 17-year-old patient with various other congenital defects. The suggested explanation for this phenomenon is allelic twin spotting. We report on two boys, aged 6 and 11 years, with an unusual combination of three different degrees of pigmentation, one of whom had in addition, psychomotor delay, dysmorphic features, musculoskeletal abnormalities and subcortical and periventricular white matter hig

Role of SLC16A10 in Psoriasis Through the Regulation of Arachidonic Acid Metabolism in Keratinocytes.

Psoriasis is an inflammatory dermatological condition challenging to treat and prone to recurrence. The pathogenesis of psoriasis is closely … lammation. Moreover, SLC16A10 may induce one of the sequelae of psoriasis, namely post-inflammatory hypopigmentation, by inhibiting melanogenesis. These findings demonstrate the potential of SLC16A10 as a diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target for psoriasis.

Unsuspected consequences of synonymous and missense variants in OCA2 can be detected in blood cell RNA samples of patients with albinism.

Oculocutaneous albinism type 2 (OCA2) is the second most frequent form of albinism and represents about 30% of OCA worldwide. As with all types of OCA, patients present with hypopigmentation of hair and skin, as well as severe visual abnormalities. We focused on a subgroup of 29 patients for whom genetic diagnosis was pending because at least one of their identified variants in or around exon 10 of OCA2 is of uncertain significance (VUS). By minigene assay, we investigated the effect of these VUS on exon 10 skipping and showed that not only intronic but also some synonymous variants can result…
