Characteristics and trends of newly identified HIV infections among incarcerated populations: CDC HIV voluntary counseling, testing, and referral system, 1992-1998.

Inmate contact with the correctional health care system provides public health professionals an opportunity to offer HIV screening to a population that might prove difficult to reach otherwise. We report on publicly funded human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) voluntary counseling, testing, and referral (VCTR) services provided to incarcerated persons in the United States. Incarcerated persons seeking VCTR services received pretest counseling and gave a blood specimen for HIV antibody testing. Specimens were considered positive if the enzyme immunoassays were repeatedly reactive and the Western b

Mathematics education and students with learning disabilities: introduction to the special series.

The prevalence of students with mathematics learning disabilities has triggered an interest among special education researchers and practitioners in developing an understanding of the needs of this group of students, and in identifying effective instructional programming to foster their mathematical performance during the school years and into adulthood. Research into the characteristics of students with mathematics learning disabilities is being approached from different perspectives, including developmental, neurological and neuropsychological, and educational. This diversity helps us develo

Measuring hot flashes: summary of a National Institutes of Health workshop.

The etiology and mechanism of hot flashes remain incompletely understood. Future studies of hormonal and neurologic systems may provide promising leads to improve our understanding of the basic phenomenon and perhaps also shed light on the placebo effect. However, this is likely a complex undertaking. Critical to this effort is the ability to reliably identify when a hot flash has occurred. The leading objective measure in use today--sternal skin conductance monitoring--has some limitations in ambulatory settings. However, a more severe limitation is the inability of sternal skin conductance t

Efficacy of Empirical Antibiotics in Community-Based Management of Uncomplicated Severe Acute Malnutrition in Children: Protocol of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 17 million children have severe acute malnutrition (SAM) worldwide, with the majority residing in South Asia. Routine empirical antibiotics are prescribed for Community-based Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (CSAM) to address presumed clinical/subclinical infections and improve nutritional recovery for children with uncomplicated SAM, but low prevalence of infection has been reported. Thus, targeted antibiotics (eg, single-dose azithromycin or 7-day amoxicillin) are recommended over empirical antibiotics to limit emerging antimicrobial resistance (AMR), but ther

Web-Based Health Coaching for Spinal Cord Injury: Results From a Mixed Methods Feasibility Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) are at high risk of experiencing secondary conditions like pressure injuries. Self-management programs may reduce the risk of complications, but traditional programs have proven to be insufficiently tailored to the needs of people with SCI. To overcome barriers to self-management support, a web-based, self-management program was developed for Canadians with SCI called SCI & U. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and potential impact of the SCI & U program in the context of a mixed methods pilot study. METHODS: The study

Nonpharmacological Management of Cancer-Related Cachexia: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Cancer-related cachexia affects approximately 50% to 80% of cancer patients and contributes significantly to cancer-related mortality, accounting for 20% of deaths. This multifactorial syndrome is characterized by systemic inflammation, anorexia, and elevated energy expenditure, leading to severe weight loss and muscle wasting. Understanding the underlying mechanisms is critical for developing effective interventions. While progress has been made over the past decade, most therapeutic approaches have centered on pharmacological agents or nutritional supplements. This systematic rev

Impact of functional restoration after anterior cervical fusion on chronic disability in work-related neck pain.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Spinal surgery in the workers compensation population shows evidence of less favorable outcomes than in general health cases. Although spine surgery has been alleged to be a cause of poor outcomes, such outcomes may be improved by appropriate postsurgical rehabilitation. PURPOSE: To compare objective demographic, physical and psychological measurements and socioeconomic outcomes of treatment in work-related disabling cervical pain for the combination of anterior cervical fusion (ACF) plus functional restoration, compared with rehabilitation alone. Linguistic Markers of Pain Communication on X (Formerly Twitter) in US States With High and Low Opioid Mortality: Machine Learning and Semantic Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic in the United States remains a major public health concern, with opioid-related deaths increasing more than 8-fold since 1999. Chronic pain, affecting 1 in 5 US adults, is a key contributor to opioid use and misuse. While previous research has explored clinical and behavioral predictors of opioid risk, less attention has been given to large-scale linguistic patterns in public discussions of pain. Social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) offer real-time, population-level insights into how individuals express pain, distress, and coping strategies. Under

The lived experience of trans persons: a bottom-up review co-written by experts by experience and academics.

We present here the first bottom-up review of the lived experience of trans persons, co-written by experts by experience and academics. We sourced the medical and non-medical literature, focusing on first-person narratives, and critically extracted experiential themes, which were reviewed and appraised in collaborative workshops and eventually shared through a cloud-based system. Numerous experts by experience and academics from diverse gender, ethnic and cultural backgrounds were involved in the above steps and co-wrote the paper. The four overarching themes were: a) the lived experience of t

Population-based interventions for reducing sexually transmitted infections, including HIV infection.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STI) are common in developing countries. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that in 1999, 340 million new cases of syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydial infection and trichomoniasis occurred. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is also common in developing countries. UNAIDS estimates that over 95% of the 40 million people infected with HIV by December 1999 live in developing countries (UNAIDS 2003). The STI and HIV epidemics are interdependent. Similar behaviours, such as frequent unprotected intercourse with different partners, place
