[HIV infection and modification of social relationships: study of 188 HIV-infected persons in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)].

HIV infection creates diverse representations among sick people, their families, the community and healthcare workers, representations that modify social relationships. To analyze the interpersonal relationships in families of people living with HIV, we began a cross-sectional descriptive study in 2001 of a population of HIV patients treated at an outpatient center in Ouagadougou. Our objectives were to: 1 degree) describe the changes in the social relationships between the subjects and members of their families; 2 degrees) itemize the difficulties they met within their families and identify t…

An integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy for bulimia nervosa: a case study using the case formulation method.

OBJECTIVE: The current study provides an illustration of an integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for the treatment of bulimia nervosa (BN), based on the case formulation strategy. METHOD: A 25-year-old Hispanic female referred herself for the treatment of eating difficulties and depressed mood. Diagnostic criteria were met for BN, major depressive episode, and alcohol abuse. Components of both CBT and IPT were utilized throughout the course of treatment. RESULTS: CBT techniques appeared to be most effective in eliminating binge eating and bi

Development of the cognitive appraisal and understanding of social events (CAUSE) videos.

This study describes the development and validation of 4 videos designed to assess adolescent cognitive appraisals and understanding of social events (the CAUSE Videos). Story lines varied in outcome (2 negative and 2 ambiguous). Convergent and divergent validity were tested in samples of college freshmen and sophomores. As hypothesized, threatening interpretations during ambiguous situations were positively associated with trait hostility (convergent validity) but were not significantly associated with aggression (divergent validity). Negative video interpretations were not significantly asso

Fragmented attachments: the paranoid-schizoid experience of loss and persecution.

The author discusses paranoid-schizoid patients who have yet to deal with whole-object depressive fears of harming one's object. Their paranoid-schizoid anxiety is more a combination of dread, paranoia, and fear of destroying one's object with neediness, envy, and other oral desires. In this part-self and part-object world, destruction is absolute. Ego functions and object relational capacities such as guilt and grief are not yet fully consolidated. The part-object is not only destroyed but is also equally capable of magically resurrecting itself to seek revenge. Fear of annihilation of the se

Toward a revised evolutionary adaptationist analysis of depression: the social navigation hypothesis.

Evolutionary biologists use Darwinian theory and functional design ("reverse engineering") analyses, to develop and test hypotheses about the adaptive functions of traits. Based upon a consideration of human social life and a functional design analysis of depression's core symptomatology we offer a comprehensive theory of its adaptive significance called the Social Navigation Hypothesis (SNH). The SNH attempts to account for all intensities of depression based on standard evolutionary theories of sociality, communication and psychological pain. The SNH suggests that depression evolved to perfo

Intergroup bias.

This chapter reviews the extensive literature on bias in favor of in-groups at the expense of out-groups. We focus on five issues and identify areas for future research: (a) measurement and conceptual issues (especially in-group favoritism vs. out-group derogation, and explicit vs. implicit measures of bias); (b) modern theories of bias highlighting motivational explanations (social identity, optimal distinctiveness, uncertainty reduction, social dominance, terror management); (c) key moderators of bias, especially those that exacerbate bias (identification, group size, status and power, threa

How employees respond to personal offense: the effects of blame attribution, victim status, and offender status on revenge and reconciliation in the workplace.

This study investigated the relationships between blame, victim and offender status, and the pursuit of revenge or reconciliation after a personal offense. Results from a sample of 141 government agency employees showed that blame is positively related to revenge and negatively related to reconciliation. In addition, victim-offender relative status moderated the relation between blame and revenge such that victims who blamed sought revenge more often when the offender's status was lower than their own. The victims' own absolute hierarchical status also moderated this relation such that lower,

Gender differences in determinants of marital disruption.

"Because the family is a highly gendered institution, the authors anticipated that characteristics of husbands and wives would have differing influences on marital disruption. Longitudinal data from the [U.S.] National Survey of Families and Households were used to examine the influence of sociodemographic and attitudinal characteristics of each spouse on the likelihood of marital disruption. In general, wives' variables have a stronger influence than do husbands' variables, suggesting that wives play a greater role in maintenance of marital relationships and are more sensitive to problems in

Personality and symptom profiles of the angry hostile depressed patient.

Fava, Rosenbaum, McCarthy, Pava, Steingard and Bless (1991) have recently proposed the existence of a subtype of depressed patients who experience anger attacks. The aim of this study was to assess if depressed patients categorized as high angry hostile have symptoms and personality profiles distinct from depressed patients categorized as low angry hostile. From a sample of 125 depressed outpatients, 26 patients were classified as high angry hostile and 25 patients as low angry hostile. The symptom profiles of these tow groups were remarkably similar, with the high angry hostile patients exhib

Facial processing in schizophrenia and delusional misidentification: cognitive neuropsychiatric approaches.

The human face is of great importance as a stimulus in view of the detailed information it contains--information vital to understand in order to survive in the complex social world. There are different aspects to facial processing, including: affect analysis, recognition of individuality and recognition of familiarity, all of which have been incorporated into the cognitive model of Bruce and Young (1986). The cognitive neuropsychiatric approach has recently been employed in the study of facial processing in schizophrenia. It has become apparent that schizophrenic subjects are impaired in facia

Death, suicide and the older adult.

Elderly people who are at high risk for suicide often have characteristics that are associated with reduced opportunity or inclination to communicate (e.g., male, living alone, residing in a low-income transient urban area, suffering from a depressive state). This paper attempts to provide converging perspectives on death and suicide from the standpoints of both the external observer and the elderly person. An interpretation of the statistical pattern is followed by a critique of current policy proposals for limiting society's response to the needs of vulnerable people on the basis of a "natur

The treatment of exhibitionists: a focus on sexual deviance versus cognitive and relationship features.

Two studies compared treatment of exhibitionists aimed at either: (1) modifying deviant sexual preferences; or (2) changing cognitions, enhancing relationship and interpersonal skills, and improving awareness of relapse prevention issues. Recidivism rates of these two programs were compared with each other and with the rates observed in untreated offenders. Results supported the focus on broader cognitive and social issues. Clearly exhibitionists can be treated effectively.

The effect of the beta-carboline FG 7142 on the behaviour of male rats in a living cage: an ethological analysis of social and nonsocial behaviour.

The effects of FG 7142, a beta-carboline benzodiazepine receptor partial inverse agonist, on the social behavior of pair-housed rats were investigated. Four 6-min dyadic social encounters in a living cage were observed in a paradigm in which one member of a pair of rats was injected. The four injection groups (n = 8) were vehicle control, and FG 7142 at 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 mg/kg, respectively. All injections were administered 2 min before the start of the first observation trial. Compared to the effects of vehicle alone, FG 7142 decreased aggressive behaviour but did not change the level of tota

Validity of an MMPI classification of problem drinker-drivers.

An empirical typology of problem drinker-drivers based on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was evaluated. Relationships were demonstrated between this typology and several kinds of external criteria: alcoholism symptoms, reasons for drinking, treatment participation and outcome and medical complications. Indicators of typological validity were further evaluated in the context of alternative means of scoring and categorizing MMPI profiles. Relationships of criteria with the drinker-driver typology were generally stronger than with other uses of the MMPI. They were, however

Delusions and the psychopathology of the elderly with dementia.

Thirty-seven, out of a sample of 100 elderly subjects, all suffering from dementia, were found to have delusions. The delusions were more common in women, in patients with a history of psychiatric illness, and amongst those with higher information subscores (Blessed Scale); and were less common in patients suffering from apraxia or severe psychosocial incompetence. Amongst the deluded patients the simultaneous presence of disorientation, hallucinations and hyperactivity often signified the diagnosis of delirium, but on follow up it was not correlated with death within 18 months. The same sympt

Influence of self-monitoring on heterosexual conversational behaviors of head trauma youth.

This study evaluates the impact of self-monitoring on three heterosexual conversational behaviors of head trauma youths. Two 5-minute audiotaped conversations occurred daily between the youths and unfamiliar female confederates. Two conversations occurring on alternate days in clinical and natural conversational settings were scored for the frequency of compliments, questions, and self-disclosures. A multiple baseline analysis with alternating treatments for "instructions to self-monitor" and "no instructions to self-monitor" revealed (a) self-monitoring had an accelerative effect on complimen
