FUS::TFCP2-positive rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare and aggressive subtype that was recently classified as a distinct entity. It is resistant to conventional chemotherapeutic regimens for RMS, and optimal treatment strategies have not been established. Here, we describe an 11-year-old boy with mandibular RMS with a FUS::TFCP2 fusion gene. At the referring hospital, the patient initially underwent standard induction chemotherapy for RMS, but it was ineffective. Radical resection, including segmental mandibulectomy and reconstruction with a rectus abdominis free flap, was performed. Histologica

BACKGROUND: To describe the treatment of 2 long-standing chronic dislocation of the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and 1 chronic recurrent dislocation.
METHODS: This report describes the treatment of 3 patients; 2 with a long-standing chronic dislocation of the TMJ and 1 with a chronic recurrent dislocation. Duration of dislocation and anatomical considerations make the treatment challenging and controversial. The patients presented in this report all developed destruction of their condyles. They were successfully treated with total joint replacement with alloplastic devices.

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis is defined as bony or fibrous adhesion of the anatomic joint components accompanied by a limitation in opening the mouth, causing difficulties with mastication, speaking and oral hygiene as well as inadvertently influencing mandibular growth. Surgical treatment procedures include arthroplasty of the joint cavity with or without a reconstruction and a coronoidectomy, an autogenous costochondral rib graft, distraction osteogenesis and intensive mouth-opening exercise, corrective orthognathic surgery or alloplastic joint prostheses. The authors of this study woul

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is fusion or a bony union of the head of the condyle and the glenoid fossa by bony or fibrotic tissues. Due to the immobility of the TMJ, all mandibular movements get affected. Treatment goals are to allow nearly normal TMJ movements, restore symmetry of the face and occlusion, and promote growth and correction of deformity in children. The surgical techniques used to treat TMJ ankylosis are a gap or interpositional arthroplasty, joint reconstruction, and distraction osteogenesis. Appropriate interposition materials include autogenous tissues, allogeneic

Statistical Shape Models (SSMs) and Sparse Prediction Models (SPMs) based on regressions between cephalometric measurements were compared against standard practice in virtual surgery planning for reconstruction of mandibular defects. Emphasis was placed on the ability of the models to reproduce clinically relevant metrics. CT scans of 50 men and 50 women were collected and split into training and testing datasets according to an 80:20 ratio. The scans were segmented, and anatomical landmarks were identified. SPMs were constructed based on direct regressions between measurements derived from th

This report aims to present the concept of reestablishing lateral pterygoid muscle function during total temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement surgery. The key feature is a lattice structure (scaffold) located in the condylar neck of a titanium, three-dimensionally (3D)-printed mandibular component that houses morselized autologous bone from the resected condyle and osteogenic stem cells from iliac bone marrow aspirate, and to which the fibrous enthesis component (collagen attachments to a bone fragment) is fixed via suture cerclage prior to the development of the bony union. Objective: To summarize the clinical anatomical features and surgical technique of the submental artery perforator flap (SMAPF), and to evaluate the outcome and value of the flap for oral cavity reconstruction after cancer ablation. Methods: A total of 56 patients with oral cancer were included in this study. The modified SMAPF excluded the anterior belly of the digastric muscle and submental fatty tissue. The primary sites of malignancy were buccal mucosa (n=24), tongue (n=21), mandibular gingiva (n=6), mouth floor (n=3), soft palate (n=2). Results: The flap size varied from 3 cm×5 cm to 5 cm

Aneurysmal bone cysts are rare benign lesions of bone tissue, infrequent in craneofacial skeleton with regard to other structures like long bones or the spine. They are composed of sinusoidal and vascular spaces blood-filled and surrounded by fibrous tissue septa. We present a case of a 29-year-old Caucasian male with a big swelling in the left mandible associated to pain and rapid growth. He referred previous extraction of the left inferior third molar. On the X-ray study, an expansive multilocular and high vascularized bony lesion within the mandibular angle was observed. It produced expansi

To assess whether locking-screw titanium plates (UniLOCK) and pedicled pectoralis major myocutaneous flaps are a valid alternative to complex reconstruction with bony free flaps in poor prognosis or poor performance status oncological patients with mandibular defects, a retrospective evaluation has been made of outcomes in 27 consecutive cases. No patient died perioperatively. Mean operating time was 270 minutes. Post-operative course was uneventful in 14. Mean follow-up was 13 months with no loss to follow-up. Twelve patients are alive and well, 12 died from their malignancy, two from non-neo

The submental island flap is useful as an alternative to microvascular free tissue transfer for the reconstruction of defects after resection of oral cancer because it is simple to harvest, reliable, and is associated with good oral function and low morbidity. However, because cancer of the oral cavity carries a risk of level I nodal metastases, the oncological safety of the flap remains controversial. Between April 2012 and September 2016, we studied patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity who had surgical resection with submental island flap reconstruction for viability of t

A case of a 53-year-old Japanese man with osteopetrosis complicated by osteomyelitis of the mandible is presented. The patient experienced frequent exacerbations and remissions of osteomyelitis of the mandible, despite undergoing several surgical debridements and sequesterectomies with appropriate antimicrobial therapy, for 3 years. Finally, the patient underwent mandibular segmental resection followed by reconstruction with a titanium reconstruction plate. Fifty-one months after surgery there is no evidence of recurrent osteomyelitis of the mandible, suggesting that a more radical surgical ap

In 24 patients, fixation of isolated or combined bone grafts has been performed exclusively with miniplates. Other than the lateral displacement of one osteomyocutaneous iliac crest graft, no complication occurred with regard to the fixation method chosen. In contrast to the clinical findings, our results of an animal experiment demonstrate less complications by fixation of vascularized bone grafts to mandibular angle defects (guinea pig) when THORP plates are used instead of miniplates. Whereas we consider miniplate fixation of vascularized bone grafts to be the method of choice, selected pat

Traumatic injuries to the lip are common, but injuries that require revascularization of the lower lip are infrequent and pose a major challenge to the reconstructive surgeon. This report describes the case of a 53-year-old woman who sustained a lower lip avulsion injury, a comminuted mandibular parasymphyseal fracture, and a hyoid bone fracture secondary to a bicycle accident. Trauma workup included computed tomographic angiography of the head and neck, which did not show vascular injury. Despite successful revascularization of the lower lip, on postoperative day 11 the patient developed a la

We performed a single-stage operation to reconstruct a large defect of the lips and commissure using a composite radial forearm-palmaris longus free flap. To obtain cranial traction and a voluntary smile, independently from any jaw movement, traction was achieved by using a lengthening temporalis myoplasty. The tendon attached to the coronoid process was fixed to the palmaris longus tendon, recreating a new commissure and a "neo-modiolus." Physical therapy was started on the 21st postoperative day to facilitate progress from a "mandibular smile," to ideally a spontaneous and symmetric smile af

The authors describe a case of Noma or Cancrum Oris, an oral gangrenous disease, features more frequently found in children from developing countries. The clinical features, its ethiopathogenesis, and its particular link with different geographic and economic areas of the world, its clinical evolution as well as surgical treatment are all discussed. Underlined is the functional and organic aspect of this disease, in particular the distortion of the face, which commonly involves the full thickness of the cheek skin and bone, mandibular ankylosis and craniofacial dismorphisms, and the modern app

PURPOSE: This study discusses types of maxillofacial injury, their treatment, and complications encountered in the Iran-Iraq war.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During 1981 to 1986, 210 casualties were treated with 250 operations in Mostafa-Khomeini hospital in Tehran. Their records were analyzed retrospectively. The operations were mostly reconstructive and consisted of methods adopted because of available instruments of that time.
RESULTS: Mandibular defects were the most prominent kind of injury (43.2%), and approximately two thirds of them needed tracheostomy. Ophthalmic injuries represented 20%

BACKGROUND: The pectoralis major myocutaneous pedicle flap (PMMPF) has been considered to be the "workhorse" of pedicled flaps in head and neck reconstruction. Several series of PMMPF procedures in head and neck reconstruction have been reported in the literature. Even with the worldwide use of free flaps, the flap is still considered the mainstay head and neck reconstructive procedures in many centers. However, the flap is usually associated with a high incidence of complications in addition to its large bulk compared with the free fasciocutaneous flaps. Also the final functional and the aest

INTRODUCTION: Patients with Craniofacial Microsomia (CFM) mandibles Types I/IIa benefit from combined LeFort 1 osteotomy and Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis (LeFort + MDO); Type IIb from LeFort + MDO or Bimaxillary osteotomy (BiMax); and Type III from BiMax (with 50% of cases having preceding mandibular procedures, including patient-fitted prosthesis); as seen in Part 1. This leads to the question how maxillary and mandibular hypoplasia are correlated and influence the types of maxillary correction.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective chart study was conducted including patients diagnos

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are usually managed medically. But partial or total reconstruction may be indicated according to the severity and the functional impairment. We assessed the functional results after total TMJ reconstruction using the Biomet Microfixation® prosthesis (Jacksonville, FL, USA).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed the files of patients having undergone reconstruction, between 2009 and 2010, with a total TMJ prosthesis. We analyzed the pre- and postoperative mouth opening, the pre- and postoperative occlusion, pre- and postoperative pain according
