Homologous bone grafts were used in 135 maxillofacial surgical procedures, including acute midfacial fracture repair (n = 77), elective osteotomies of the facial bones (n = 35), secondary correction of traumatic deformities (n = 6), mandibular reconstruction (n = 10), facial bone augmentation (n = 5), and reconstruction of maxillary tumor defects (n = 2). Postsurgical complications occurred in five of the patients. This article reviews the rationale for using homologous bone grafts, their immune response, how they heal, and the risk of transmission of disease.

Background/Objectives: Coronectomy is a nerve-preserving alternative for mandibular third molars at high risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury. However, coronectomy-related knowledge, clinical experience, treatment preferences, and self-reported decision-making confidence may differ between general dentists (GD group) and oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFS group). This study aimed to compare these factors and identify factors associated with coronectomy-related knowledge. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted between June 2024 and January 2026 among 300 dentists in Turkey. Par

INTRODUCTION: Recent advances in high-resolution MRI and reconstruction techniques offer new opportunities to enhance visualization of the facial nerve and its relationship to parotid tumors in 3D models. The aim of this study is twofold: first, to assess the technical feasibility of generating three-dimensional printed anatomical models from MRI data. Second, to evaluate surgeons' perceptions of three different visualization methods (3D models on a 2D screen, 3D-printed models, and augmented reality (AR) holograms) to identify the most advantageous method for surgeons performing parotid gland

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC), a crucial component of the midface, frequently lead to functional impairments, such as diplopia, enophthalmos, and restricted ocular motility. Although surgical intervention is often required, conventional techniques can be limited by suboptimal access and potential aesthetic drawbacks. This study prospectively assessed the efficacy, functional recovery, and cosmetic results of the Y-modified transconjunctival technique for managing ZMC fractures with concomitant orbital floor injury.

OBJECT: Endoscopic approaches to the anterior craniocervical junction are increasing in frequency. Choice of oral versus endoscopic endonasal approach to the odontoid often depends on the relationship of the C1-2 complex to the hard palate. However, it is not known how this relevant anatomy changes with age. We hypothesize that there is a dynamic relationship of C-2 and the hard palate, which changes with age, and potentially affects the choice of surgical approach. The aim of this study was to characterize the relationship of C-2 relative to the hard palate with respect to age and sex.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between mandibular morphology and the localization of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using CBCT scans. Mandibular morphology was classified according to the 14-type. These types are as follows: Straight, Pen Shape, Oblique, D Type, B Type, Kidney, Hourglass, Sickle, Golf Club, Toucan Beak, Tear, Cudgel, Basal, and Saddle. The vertical position of the IAN was assessed by dividing the mandibular cross-section into four equal zones from superior to

INTRODUCTION: In cases of trauma, the most common fractures of the facial region are the nasal bone fractures followed by mandibular fractures. About 60% of mandible fractures are associated with teeth in the fracture line; however conversely, the dentulous mandible has a higher susceptibility of fracture in any impact. Whenever a tooth is involved in the fracture line, it is not unlikely that the tooth root fracture will be associated with it. The prognosis and treatment of such a tooth persistent in a fracture line depends upon the level of tooth root fracture.

INTRODUCTION: The oculocardiac reflex is initiated by a pressure stimulus to the orbit or periorbital structures causing in bradycardia transmitted via the trigeminal-vagus nerve reflex arc. While this most frequently occurs with ophthalmologic surgeries, trauma to the orbit and periorbital structures can result in bradycardia and even in some cases, asystole. The aim of this case report and review of the literature is to identify and examine recent studies of the oculocardiac reflex related to facial trauma and to identify associated patient age, symptoms, and fracture patterns.

BACKGROUND: Bedside procedures are seldom subject to the same safety precautions as operating room (OR) procedures. Since July 2013, we have performed a multidisciplinary checklist before all bedside bronchoscopy-guided percutaneous tracheostomy insertions (BPTIs). We hypothesized that the implementation of this checklist before BPTI would decrease adverse procedural events.
METHODS: A prospective study of all patients who underwent BPTI after checklist implementation (PostCL, 2013-2014, n = 63) at our Level I trauma center were compared to all patients (retrospectively reviewed historical co

BACKGROUND: Satisfaction with appearance, functional outcomes (speech, swallowing), work status after microsurgical reconstruction for maxillofacial gunshot wounds (GSW) remain largely unknown. The purpose of this study is to report these parameters. By investigating these outcomes, we also aimed to provide microsurgical algorithms for complex maxillofacial GSW.
METHODS: Forty-two consecutive maxillofacial GSW patients between 2006 and 2014 were analyzed for outcomes. Mean age was 41.3 years ranging 14 to 77 years. There were 33 males and 9 females.
RESULTS: Twenty-four patients received 36

Imaging plays a key role in dental implantation, management of maxillofacial trauma, facial reconstruction, temporomandibular joint pathology, and evaluation and treatment of neoplasms and infections. In addition to traditional conventional radiography, recent advances in computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography-computed tomography fusion technology have made radiology an even more vital component of patient care in dental and craniomaxillofacial practice.

This article discusses the current considerations in treatment planning for retention of the natural tooth through endodontic therapy (including orthograde first-time treatment, retreatment, and endodontic surgery) versus extraction and placement of a dental implant. As a secondary goal, the article describes several specific cases in which the best option is either an implant or retention of the natural tooth. The issue of tooth retention versus implant therapy is also addressed with regard to the specific clinical diagnosis of resorption in all of its various forms. Emphasis has been placed

This study reports on 15 mandibular reconstructions using the Dumbach Titan Mesh-System and particulate cancellous bone and marrow harvested from bilateral posterior ilia. All cases showed segmental defects. Eleven cases involved patients with malignant tumor. Six patients had received irradiation of 40-50 Gy. Reconstructions were performed immediately in 1 patient and secondarily in the remaining 14 patients. In 13 cases, mandibles were successfully reconstructed. Of these 13 patients, 9 reconstructions were completed without complications, whereas the other 4 cases showed complications. In 2

Various materials such as autogenous bone, cartilage and alloplastic implants have been used to reconstruct orbital floor fractures. A new material is needed because of disadvantages of nonresorbable alloplastic materials and difficulties in harvesting autogenous tissues. In this study safety and value of the use of resorbable mesh plate in the treatment of orbital floor fractures are discussed. Between 2002 and 2004 a total of 17 maxillofacial trauma patients complicated with orbital floor fractures were treated with resorbable mesh plate through subciliary or transconjunctival incisions.
