The Southern Rural Access Program and Alabama's Rural Health Leaders Pipeline: a partnership to develop needed minority health care professionals.

Rural Health Leaders Pipeline programs are intended to increase the number of youth interested in and pursuing health professions in rural communities. This paper presents 2 complementary approaches to Rural Health Leaders Pipeline programs. Two different organizations in Alabama recruit students from 18 specified counties. One organization is a rural, community-based program with college freshmen and upperclassmen from rural communities. Students shadow health professionals for 6 weeks, attend classes, visit medical schools, complete and present health projects, and receive support from onlin

The Push and Pull of Self-Managing Mild COPD: An Evaluation of Participant Experiences of a Nurse-Led Telephone Health Coaching Intervention.

Health coaching is a novel population intervention to support self-management but it is untested in people with mild disease. People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with mild dyspnea are a population excluded from supported self-management and whose illness might progress without intervention. We explored participants' experiences about how health coaching motivated behavior change. Interviews were conducted with 21 intervention and 10 control participants at 6 months, and 20 intervention participants at 12 months. Participants were identified from a randomized controlled trial of t

The power of practice: simulation training improving the quality of neonatal resuscitation skills in Bihar, India.

BACKGROUND: Globally, neonatal mortality accounts for nearly half of under-five mortality, and intrapartum related events are a leading cause. Despite the rise in neonatal resuscitation (NR) training programs in low- and middle-income countries, their impact on the quality of NR skills amongst providers with limited formal medical education, particularly those working in rural primary health centers (PHCs), remains incompletely understood. METHODS: This study evaluates the impact of PRONTO International simulation training on the quality of NR skills in simulated resuscitations and live deliv

Creating developmentally auspicious school environments for African American boys.

African American (AA) boys face serious barriers to academic success, many of which are uncommon--or absent--in the lives of AA girls, other children of color, and European American children. In this chapter, we identify nine critical challenges to the successful education of AA boys and review possible solutions. In addition, we evaluate one particular reform, public single-sex schooling, as a possible solution to the challenges facing AA boys. Considering the evidence, we argue that recent efforts to expand the existence of public single-sex schools are rarely grounded in empirical findings.

Research Preparedness Among Osteopathic Medical Students in the Post-Pass/Fail Licensing Examination Era: Bridging the Gap Between Rising Expectations and Student Confidence.

BACKGROUND: Since the transition of COMLEX Level 1 and USMLE Step 1 to pass/fail scoring, research productivity has become an increasingly important component of residency applications. National match data demonstrate increasing expectations for research experiences, abstracts, presentations, and publications across specialties. However, limited data describe how osteopathic medical students perceive their research preparedness, access to institutional research resources, and confidence in achieving competitive scholarly productivity in the post-pass/fail licensing examination era. METHODS: A

On AI-augmented transformatizing in practice: protocols, quality criteria, and reporting standards for Human-AI Augmented Mixed Methods Research.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly reshaping qualitative research, quantitative research, and mixed methods research, but practical guidance for conducting, evaluating, and reporting human-AI analytic collaboration remains underdeveloped. Building on AI-augmented transformatizing, a representational-recursive framework that conceptualizes AI as a participant in analytic re-representation rather than merely as a technical tool, this article advances a practice-oriented framework for Human-AI Augmented Mixed Methods Research. The article offers three integrated contributions. First, it

From Challenge to Studio: A Prototype Frontline AI Innovation Mechanism to Address the AI Embedding Deficit in Healthcare and Educational Institutions.

INTRODUCTION: Health systems are expanding access to artificial intelligence (AI), yet frontline integration into teaching, clinical workflows, and research practice remains uneven. We frame this gap as the "AI embedding deficit," reflecting limited organizational pathways that enable frontline professionals to translate local needs into legitimate, supported, and sustainable AI-enabled tools and workflows. This Experience Report describes a prototype intervention mechanism implemented at an academic nursing school: a rapid-cycle Nursing-AI Challenge followed by a year-round Nursing-AI Studio

Stability Behavior of 2 Different Designs of Implants Placed in Pterygoid Bone: An Anatomical Cadaveric Study.

OBJECTIVE: Implant placement to the pterygoid bone has become more popular in implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation of full arch or posterior edentulous areas. However, this type of implant placement, which has anchorage points on the maxillary bone and pterygoid bone, sometimes poses difficulties for the clinician due to differences in bone density. For a stable implant placement, the macro design of the implant and related factors affect the success as much as the success of the clinician. In this article, the authors aimed to evaluate the 2 different dental implant macro-design behavi

Exploring COPD Participants' Experiences in a Comprehensive Telewellness Program within a Mixed-Disability Cohort: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Telehealth pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has expanded access to rehabilitation services for individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD); however, participation and adherence remain variable. COPD management emphasizes patient-centered approaches that address heterogeneity of this condition. Although telehealth PR has improved access to care, there is a need to better understand how broader telewellness programs can support patient-centered care and improve patient engagement. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how individuals with COPD perceive changes in the

Identity scaffolding as a moral need in the caretaking of unaccompanied refugee minors.

BACKGROUND: Unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) represent one of the most vulnerable groups within the global refugee population, having fled armed conflict without familial support. Although policies in high-income countries secure URMs' basic rights-housing, education, healthcare and legal protection-these standardised frameworks frequently neglect the sociocultural and relational dimensions of identity integral to their well-being. OBJECTIVE: To articulate the moral imperative of identity scaffolding in URM care, demonstrating how current approaches enforce assimilation, exacerbate identit

From andragogy to heutagogy: a scaffolded pathway for self-directed neurosurgical learning.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical practice demands continual adaptation to complex pathologies, novel technologies, and evolving service models. Traditional teacher-centred training may be insufficient to cultivate the autonomous, reflective, and adaptive experts required for modern neurosurgical care. METHODS: We conducted a targeted narrative review of literature on pedagogy, andragogy, heutagogy, self-directed learning, and the Master Adaptive Learner (MAL) framework, and mapped key principles onto the UK Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP) for neurosurgery and the European neuros

Strategies to reduce hyperglycemia-related anxiety in elite athletes with type 1 diabetes: A qualitative analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Managing blood glucose levels is challenging for elite athletes with type 1 diabetes (T1D) as competition can cause unpredictable fluctuations. While fear of hypoglycemia during physical activity is well documented, research on hyperglycemia-related anxiety (HRA) is limited. HRA refers to the heightened fear that hyperglycemia-related symptoms will impair functioning. This study investigates current strategies employed to mitigate HRA during competition and the development of alternative approaches. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Elite athletes with TID, aged >14 who self-reported HR
