Microcontroller Implementation of LSTM Neural Networks for Dynamic Hand Gesture Recognition.

Accelerometers are nowadays included in almost any portable or mobile device, including smartphones, smartwatches, wrist-bands, and even smart rings. The data collected from them is therefore an ideal candidate to tackle human motion recognition, as it can easily and unobtrusively be acquired. In this work we analyze the performance of a hand-gesture classification system implemented using LSTM neural networks on a resource-constrained microcontroller platform, which required trade-offs between network accuracy and resource utilization. Using a publicly available dataset, which includes data f

Mpox-XDE: an ensemble model utilizing deep CNN and explainable AI for monkeypox detection and classification.

The daily surge in cases in many nations has made the growing number of human monkeypox (Mpox) cases an important global concern. Therefore, it is imperative to identify Mpox early to prevent its spread. The majority of studies on Mpox identification have utilized deep learning (DL) models. However, research on developing a reliable method for accurately detecting Mpox in its early stages is still lacking. This study proposes an ensemble model composed of three improved DL models to more accurately classify Mpox in its early phases. We used the widely recognized Mpox Skin Images Dataset (MSID)

Fast and trustworthy nowcasting of dengue fever: A case study using attention-based probabilistic neural networks in São Paulo, Brazil.

Nowcasting methods are crucial in infectious disease surveillance, as reporting delays often lead to underestimation of recent incidence and can impair timely public health decision-making. Accurate real-time estimates of case counts are essential for resource allocation, policy responses, and communication with the public. In this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic neural network (PNN) architecture, named NowcastPNN, to estimate occurred-but-not-yet-reported cases of infectious diseases, demonstrated here using dengue fever incidence in São Paulo, Brazil. The proposed model combines stat

Domain adaptation via Wasserstein distance and discrepancy metric for chest X-ray image classification.

Deep learning technology can effectively assist physicians in diagnosing chest radiographs. Conventional domain adaptation methods suffer from inaccurate lesion region localization, large errors in feature extraction, and a large number of model parameters. To address these problems, we propose a novel domain-adaptive method WDDM to achieve abnormal identification of chest radiographic images by combining Wasserstein distance and difference measures. Specifically, our method uses BiFormer as a multi-scale feature extractor to extract deep feature representations of data samples, which focuses

An uncertainty-based interpretable deep learning framework for predicting breast cancer outcome.

BACKGROUND: Predicting outcome of breast cancer is important for selecting appropriate treatments and prolonging the survival periods of patients. Recently, different deep learning-based methods have been carefully designed for cancer outcome prediction. However, the application of these methods is still challenged by interpretability. In this study, we proposed a novel multitask deep neural network called UISNet to predict the outcome of breast cancer. The UISNet is able to interpret the importance of features for the prediction model via an uncertainty-based integrated gradients algorithm. U

A novel CNN architecture for accurate early detection and classification of Alzheimer's disease using MRI data.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder that requires accurate diagnosis for effective management and treatment. In this article, we propose an architecture for a convolutional neural network (CNN) that utilizes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from the Alzheimer's disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset to categorize AD. The network employs two separate CNN models, each with distinct filter sizes and pooling layers, which are concatenated in a classification layer. The multi-class problem is addressed across three, four, and five categories. The propo

Bilinear Perceptual Fusion Algorithm Based on Brain Functional and Structural Data for ASD Diagnosis and Regions of Interest Identification.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a serious mental disorder with a complex pathogenesis mechanism and variable presentation among individuals. Although many deep learning algorithms have been used to diagnose ASD, most of them focus on a single modality of data, resulting in limited information extraction and poor stability. In this paper, we propose a bilinear perceptual fusion (BPF) algorithm that leverages data from multiple modalities. In our algorithm, different schemes are used to extract features according to the characteristics of functional and structural data. Through bilinear operat

Digital Epidemiology of Prescription Drug References on X (Formerly Twitter): Neural Network Topic Modeling and Sentiment Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Data from the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) can provide insights into the types of language that are used when discussing drug use. In past research using latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), we found that tweets containing "street names" of prescription drugs were difficult to classify due to the similarity to other colloquialisms and lack of clarity over how the terms were used. Conversely, "brand name" references were more amenable to machine-driven categorization. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to use next-generation techniques (beyond LDA) from natural language proce

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe psychiatric disorder that currently lacks any objective diagnostic markers. Here, we develop a deep learning approach to discover the mass spectrometric features that can discriminate MDD patients from health controls. Using plasma peptides, the neural network, termed as CMS-Net, can perform diagnosis and prediction with an accuracy of 0.9441. The sensitivity and specificity reached 0.9352 and 0.9517 respectively, and the area under the curve was enhanced to 0.9634. Using the gradient-based feature importance method to interpret crucial features, we
