Retrospective Case Analysis of Transnasal Endoscopic Resection of Orbital Apex Tumor.

Endoscopic endonasal surgery has gained increasing recognition as an effective approach for the management of orbital tumors. In this study, … remained unchanged in one patient (12.5%). No postoperative complications were observed, including ocular motility disorders, visual field defects, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, or hemorrhage. All patients with benign tumors showed no evidence of recurrence, while the patient with a malignant tumor received adjuvant radiotherapy. Endoscopic endonasal resection represents a …

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Globe Translation in Abducens Palsy.

PURPOSE: It has been supposed that rectus muscle paralysis would cause proptosis due to the reduction in active posterior tension. This study aimed to test this proposition by evaluating globe translation during horizontal duction in patients with abducens palsy. DESIGN: Prospective, single-center, fellow-eye controlled, case series. METHODS: Horizontal globe rotation and translation were quantified using orbital magnetic resonance imaging of patients with isolated unilateral abducens nerve palsy without other ocular motility disorders. Unaffected fellow eyes served as the control group. Dig…

CSF protein and cellular profiles in various stages of HIV infection related to neurological manifestations.

CSF protein and cellular profiles were studied in 28 HIV-infected patients. Twenty of them had neurological complaints, but only 6 patients had objective neurological deficits such as dementia, ocular motility disorders or polyneuropathy. The serum/CSF HIV antibody ratio was on average lowest in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) (4 patients) and highest or almost normal in lymphadenopathy syndrome (LAS) (11) and asymptomatic seropositivity (ASX) (7), while it varied between these extremes in AIDS-related complex (ARC) (6). However, low values of the ratio were also found in the HIV-inf…

Visual impairment and myopia in Brazilian children: a population-based study.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of myopia and other causes of visual impairment (VI) in individuals aged 10 to 15 years who live in a typical Brazilian city. METHODS: Random selection of geographically based clusters was performed to obtain a sample of children aged 10 to 15 years in Gurupi City, Tocantins, Brazil. From June to August 2007, children in 12 clusters were enumerated through a door-to-door survey. All children with an uncorrected visual acuity (VA) worse than 20/32 in either eye were scheduled for ophthalmologic evaluation, including VA and ocular motility testing, cycloplegi

Expanding the genetics and phenotypes of ocular congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify genetic etiologies and genotype/phenotype associations for unsolved ocular congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (oCCDDs). METHODS: We coupled phenotyping with exome or genome sequencing of 467 probands (550 affected and 1108 total individuals) with genetically unsolved oCCDDs, integrating analyses of pedigrees, human and animal model phenotypes, and de novo variants to identify rare candidate single-nucleotide variants, insertion/deletions, and structural variants disrupting protein-coding regions. Prioritized variants were classified for pathogeni

Deficits in predictive smooth pursuit after mild traumatic brain injury.

Given that even mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) may produce extensive diffuse axonal injury (DAI), we hypothesized that mild TBI patients would show deficits in predictive smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM), associated with impaired cognitive functions, as these processes are dependent on common white matter connectivity between multiple cerebral and cerebellar regions. The ability to predict target trajectories during SPEM was investigated in 21 mild TBI patients using a periodic sinusoidal paradigm. Compared to 26 control subjects, TBI patients demonstrated decreased target prediction. TB

Regional microstructural damage and patterns of eye movement impairment: a DTI and video-oculography study in neurodegenerative parkinsonian syndromes.

Characteristic alterations of eye movement control are a common feature of neurodegenerative parkinsonism, including Parkinson's disease (PD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Regional microstructural alterations as assessed by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) have been reported in PD, PSP, and MSA. Therefore, we investigated the specific association between eye movement disturbances and microstructural impairment in these diseases. Video-oculographic recordings of smooth pursuit and visually guided reactive saccades as well as fractional anisotropy (FA) m

Kinematic and diffusion tensor imaging definition of familial Marcus Gunn jaw-winking synkinesis.

BACKGROUND: Marcus Gunn jaw-winking synkinesis (MGJWS) is characterized by eyelid ptosis, which disappears during jaw movement. Familial MGJWS is an extremely rare condition. Some authors suggested that MGJWS is due to neural misdirection in the brainstem whereas others suggested that aberrant reinnervation or ephapse may be responsible for synkinetic activity. Pathogenesis of this condition is therefore still unclear. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To investigate pathogenetic mechanism in familial MGJWS we performed neurophysiological (EMG, Blink Reflex, Recovery cycle of the R2 component o

[Eye findings in paediatric brain tumour - data basis for a follow-up proposal].

BACKGROUND: Morphologic alterations and functional disturbances of the visual system are frequently observed in children with brain tumours. At present we are not aware of published data giving recommendations for ophthalmic follow-up in these patients. PATIENTS: A retrospective analysis of 125 children with a brain tumour was done to perform a risk analysis. METHOD: According to a sequential test strategy risk factors for various eye findings have been evaluated. RESULTS: Tumour location is the major risk factor for ophthalmological findings. Eye motility pathology was mainly associated wi

Paraocular sinus mucoceles.

BACKGROUND: Patients with paraocular sinus masses may manifest ocular complications, including orbital displacement, proptosis, diplopia, restricted extraocular muscles, decreased vision, chemosis, pain, and optic neuritis. METHODS: Two patients with paraocular sinus masses came to our clinic for examination. One had proptosis and orbital displacement and a chief symptom of increasing diplopia, along with dull brow pain and sudden decreased vision of the left eye. He was diagnosed with polypoid disease and mucoceles of the ethmoidal and frontal sinuses. The second patient experienced pain and

Unusual and Rare Causes of Monocular Elevation Deficit.

INTRODUCTION: To study the rare and unusual causes of monocular elevation deficit. METHODS: Five patients presenting to us with diplopia and elevation deficit were thoroughly examined and were found to have monocular elevation deficit due to rare causes. OBSERVATIONS: All five were found to have different underlying etiologies - iatrogenic, sphenoid wing meningioma, cysticercosis, sarcoidosis and mid brain infarct, and were managed appropriately. DISCUSSION: Monocular Elevation Deficit can occur due to a variety of causes. Having a high index of suspicion for the more serious etiologies is
