Pathology of the heart in Kawasaki disease.

Pathologic studies were done on 20 hearts of patients who had typical clinical signs and symptoms of Kawasaki disease. The cardiac lesions were classified according to the duration of illness at the time of death. Stage I (zero to nine days) was characterized by acute perivasculitis and vasculitis of the microvessels (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) and small arteries, and acute perivasculitis and endarteritis of the three major coronary arteries (MCAs). Pericarditis, myocarditis, inflammation of the atrioventricular conduction system, and endocarditis with valvulitis were also present.

Pathology of the Lens in Down's syndrome.

A pathological study of the lenses of 21 patients with Down's syndrome disclosed no distinctive abnormalities of the lens capsule, as had been reported previously. Five patients, 15 years of age or older, had focal cortical changes consistent with the characteristic flake-like opacities seen in patients with Down's syndrome after the first decade of life. Three patients with more extensive, visually significant lens opacities showed nonspecific cataractous changes. No abnormalities other than pathological artifacts were seen in the lenses of patients younger than 15 years of age.

The surgical pathology of thoracic aortic aneurysms.

In 63 resected thoracic aortic aneurysms, the commonest histological finding (45 cases, 71.4%) was cystic medionecrosis. These cases formed two groups, 29 with widespread fragmentation and loss of elastic tissue (elastopathy) and 16 cases without elastopathy who were older and included most of the 18 cases of dissecting aneurysms. Thirteen patients had the Marfan syndrome, 10 showing cystic medionecrosis with elastopathy, indistinguishable from the cases with no Marfan stigmata although partial 'dissections' were mainly found in the Marfan patients, Histological appearances ranged from normal

[Dreams under normal conditions and in pathology].

Experiments on wakening from "rapid" and "slow" sleep, as well as clinical and epidemiological studies revealed differences in the reports of dreams. These differences were in correlation with the character of cerebral or somatical pathology and with the representativeness of phasic components of "rapid" sleep.

Pathology of ocular onchocerciasis: human and experimental.

Involvement of the outer eye in Onchocerca volvulus infection is characterized by an inflammatory process around degenerating microfilariae. Individual microfilariae in the cornea may be associated with localized punctate lesions or, especially when present in large numbers, may provoke a sclerosing keratitis due to invasion by fibrovascular pannus from the limbal conjunctiva. Anterior uveitis develops in some patients and can be either granulomatous, probably as a result of direct microfilarial invasion of the iris and ciliary body, or non-granulomatous, in which case the inflammation is like

[Pathology of the lymphopharyngeal ring in children].

The condition of tonsils was studied in 9612 children of organized establishments aged up to 14 years. Diseases of the tonsils were found in 34.8% cases (simple hyperplasia in 35.6%, chronic tonsillitis in 64.4% cases). In 63.3% cases chronic tonsillitis was accompanied by tonsillar hypertrophy. In 84% cases it proceeded with signs of tonsillogenous intoxication. Lymphopharyngeal ring pathology was more often than not found in 7-14 year old children (44.6%). The authors discuss problems of pathogenesis, clinical course, diagnostics and treatment of lymphopharyngeal ring pathology in children. …

Computerized reconstructive tomography applied to breast pathology.

Breast tumors can be clearly defined from the surrounding breast parenchyma by the use of computerized reconstructive tomography. Certain types of fibrocystic mastitis also can be distinguished from tumors, but other types of fibrous mastitis and probably fibroadenomas may not be distinguishable from tumors unless contrast material is used.

[Pathology of the "primary" cardiomyopathies (author's transl)].

The definition and clinical classification of the cardiomyopathies which the author uses are briefly mentioned, macroscopic, histologic, histochemical and electron microscopic appearances of the three clinical groups are described in detail. Classification is made into: 1. Congestive cardiomyopathy, 2a. hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with obstruction, 2b. hypertrophic cardiomyopathy without obstruction, 3. obliterative or restrictive cardiomyopathy. Löffler's endocarditis parietalis fibroplastica and endomyocardial fibrosis are examples which are compared with eosinophilic myocarditis and patholo

Intracranial hemangiopericytomas. Angiography, pathology and differential diagnosis.

Intracranial hemangiopericytomas are tumors which angiographically and histologically can mimic other vascular intracranial masses. The term angioblastic meningioma has been applied to this tumor and to other vascular tumors. However, hemangiopericytomas have a unique biological behavior and prognosis as they tend to recur or metastasize and are insensitive to radiation. Hence, the importance of their specific recognition is emphasized. This is a report of the roentgenologic and pathologic fidings in five cases of histologically verified intracranial hemangiopericytomas. The angiographic findi
