Saliency modulates global perception in simultanagnosia.

Patients with parieto-occipital brain damage may show simultanagnosia, a selective impairment in the simultaneous perception and integration of multiple objects (global perception) with normal recognition of individual objects. Recent findings in patients with simultanagnosia indicate improved global perception at smaller spatial distances between local elements of hierarchical organized complex visual arrays. Global perception thus does not appear to be an all-or-nothing phenomenon but can be modified by the spatial relationship between local elements. The present study aimed to define charac

Differential effects of low-frequency rTMS at the occipital pole on visual-induced alpha desynchronization and visual-evoked potentials.

Visual-induced alpha desynchronization (VID) and visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) characterize occipital activation in response to visual stimulation but their exact relationship is unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that VID and VEPs reflect different aspects of cortical activation. For this purpose, we determined whether VID and VEPs are differentially modulated by low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the occipital pole. Scalp EEG responses to visual stimuli (flashed either to the left or to the right visual field) were recorded for 8 min in six healthy

An fMRI study of theory of mind in schizophrenic patients with "passivity" symptoms.

Several studies have shown that patients with schizophrenia underactivate brain regions involved in theory of mind relative to controls during functional brain imaging. However, in most studies the samples were fairly heterogeneous in terms of clinical symptomatology. We examined a group of nine patients with first episode or recurrent episodes, who clinically presented with predominant "passivity" symptoms such as third-person auditory hallucinations or delusion of control, using a cartoon-based theory of mind task and compared activation patterns with a group of 13 healthy controls. All pati

Deterioration of visual-perceptual organization ability in Alzheimer's disease.

Although deterioration of higher-order visual information processing abilities occurs in Alzheimer's disease (AD), few cross-sectional or longitudinal studies have systematically examined this deficit. The performance of 135 patients with probable AD and 97 matched normal control (NC) participants were compared on a structured test of perceptual organization ability, the Hooper Visual Organization Test (VOT). Both the standard VOT score and a derived score that corrected for anomia were significantly lower for AD patients than for NC participants, but neither score was particularly effective a

Visual adaptation provides objective electrophysiological evidence of facial identity discrimination.

Discrimination of facial identities is a fundamental function of the human brain that is challenging to examine with macroscopic measurements of neural activity, such as those obtained with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG). Although visual adaptation or repetition suppression (RS) stimulation paradigms have been successfully implemented to this end with such recording techniques, objective evidence of an identity-specific discrimination response due to adaptation at the level of the visual representation is lacking. Here, we addressed this issue wit

Perceptual alternations between unbound moving contours and bound shape motion engage a ventral/dorsal interplay.

Visual shape and motion information, processed in distinct brain regions, should be combined to elicit a unitary coherent percept of an object in motion. In an fMRI study, we identified brain regions underlying the perceptual binding of motion and shape independently of the features-contrast, motion, and shape-used to design the moving displays. These displays alternately elicited a bound (moving diamond) or an unbound (disconnected moving segments) percept, and were either physically unchanging yet perceptually bistable or physically changing over time. The joint analysis of the blood-oxygen-

Multifocal electroretinographic abnormalities in ethambutol-induced visual loss.

Two patients who developed decreased visual acuity after several months of ethambutol treatment for Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare infection had bitemporal visual field defects that suggested optic chiasm damage. Multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) disclosed markedly low-amplitude responses at fixation and in the regions corresponding to the visual field defects. These results suggested that the visual dysfunction might be entirely attributable to retinal rather than optic nerve toxicity. These are the first reported patients to show mfERG abnormalities that correspond to bitemporal vis

Orientation sensitivity to graspable objects: an fMRI adaptation study.

It has been proposed that vision-for-perception and vision-for-action are subserved by distinct streams of visual processing, the ventral and dorsal stream, respectively [Milner, A. D., Goodale, M. A., 1995. The visual brain in action. Oxford University Press, Oxford]. Such a distinction has been supported by a recent functional magnetic resonance (fMR) adaptation study [Valyear, K. F., Culham, J. C., Sharif, N., Westwood, D., Goodale, M. A., 2006. A double dissociation between sensitivity to changes in object identity and object orientation in the ventral and dorsal visual streams: A human fM

Cortical correlates of face and scene inversion: a comparison.

Face recognition is more strongly impaired by stimulus inversion than nonface object recognition. This phenomenon, known as the face inversion effect (FIE), suggests that the visual system contains specialized processing mechanisms that are more engaged by upright faces than by inverted faces or nonface objects. Neuroimaging and neuropsychological studies indicate that environmental scenes may also recruit specialized-purpose processing machinery but a comparable inversion effect for scenes has not been established. Here we demonstrate that both face and scene inversion lead to behavioral pena

Deficits of motion integration and segregation in patients with unilateral extrastriate lesions.

Functional neuroimaging in human subjects and single cell recordings in monkeys show that several extra-striate visual areas are activated by visual motion. However, the extent to which different types of motion are processed in different regions remains unclear, although neuropsychological studies of patients with circumscribed lesions hint at regional specialization. We, therefore, studied four patients with unilateral damage to different regions of extrastriate visual cortex on a series of visual discrimination tasks that required them, to a different extent, to integrate local motion signa

[Multifocal steady-state pattern-reversal electroretinography in glaucoma patients].

AIM: This study was designed to answer the question of whether multifocal steady-state pattern-reversal electroretinography (ERG) is capable of detecting glaucomatous visual field defects. METHOD: Sixteen patients (28 eyes) and ten normal subjects (20 eyes) were examined. Multifocal pattern ERGs were recorded with the RETIscan system and DTL electrodes. We stimulated with a steady-state checkerboard pattern reversal (three reversals during 171 ms sweep length, congruent with 17.5 reversals/s). The multifocal pattern ERG amplitudes were evaluated using discrete Fourier transformation (DFT) acr

Visual event-related potentials of dyslexic children to rhyming and nonrhyming stimuli.

In a visual event-related potential (ERP) study, children diagnosed as dyslexic in terms of both age and IQ discrepancy criteria were compared with two contrast groups: poor for age (SLOW) readers and normal reading children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). The children viewed 200 stimulus pairs and judged whether the second stimulus of each pair rhymed with the first. The first stimulus was always a three-letter word, while half of the second stimuli were pronounceable nonsense words and half were real words. Rhyme probability was 50%. The ERP waveforms of the dyslexics were significant

Familial spastic paraplegia, peroneal neuropathy, and crural hypopigmentation: a new neurocutaneous syndrome.

A neurocutaneous syndrome is described in which spastic paraplegia, peroneal neuropathy, and crural hypopigmentation are inherited in a dominant pattern. Spastic paraplegia becomes clinically apparent during adolescence or in childhood and progresses slowly throughout the adult years with a variability in severity of expression. Peroneal neuropathy is documented clinically and by slowing on nerve conduction studies. Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials also yield a delayed response, but brainstem auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials in upper and lower extremities

Visual evoked potentials in normal subjects and patients with multiple sclerosis.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) by checkerboard pattern-reversal stimulation were recorded in 70 subjects aged 10--69 years and in 100 patients with definite, probable or possible multiple sclerosis (MS). Longer latencies and smaller amplitudes of the major positive component were found in male subjects, in old subjects and when the amplifier's band-pass was narrowed. Subjects 10--14 years old had longer latencies and higher amplitudes than mature adults. Based on findings in the normal material, the following three criteria were used in evaluating the recordings from patients: the latency, th

Facial emotion recognition impairments are associated with brain volume abnormalities in individuals with HIV.

Impaired facial emotion recognition abilities in HIV+ patients are well documented, but little is known about the neural etiology of these difficulties. We examined the relation of facial emotion recognition abilities to regional brain volumes in 44 HIV-positive (HIV+) and 44 HIV-negative control (HC) adults. Volumes of structures implicated in HIV-associated neuropathology and emotion recognition were measured on MRI using an automated segmentation tool. Relative to HC, HIV+ patients demonstrated emotion recognition impairments for fearful expressions, reduced anterior cingulate cortex (ACC)

The Role of Somatosensory Information in Speech Perception: Imitation Improves Recognition of Disordered Speech.

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning paradigms involving written feedback appear to be a viable clinical tool to reduce the intelligibility burden of dysarthria. The underlying theoretical assumption is that pairing the degraded acoustics with the intended lexical targets facilitates a remapping of existing mental representations in the lexicon. This study investigated whether ties to mental representations can be strengthened by way of a somatosensory motor trace. METHOD: Following an intelligibility pretest, 100 participants were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental groups. The control group received no

Recognition of face and non-face stimuli in autistic spectrum disorder.

The ability to remember faces is critical for the development of social competence. From childhood to adulthood, we acquire a high level of expertise in the recognition of facial images, and neural processes become dedicated to sustaining competence. Many people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have poor face recognition memory; changes in hairstyle or other non-facial features in an otherwise familiar person affect their recollection skills. The observation implies that they may not use the configuration of the inner face to achieve memory competence, but bolster performance in other ways.

Fronto-temporal dysregulation in asymptomatic bipolar I patients: a paired associate functional MRI study.

Bipolar disorder is associated with persistent declarative memory disturbances, but the neural basis of these deficits is not well understood. We used fMRI to investigate brain activity during performance on a face-name paired associate task, which allows for the dissociation of encoding and recall-related memory processes. Fifteen clinically remitted bipolar I disorder patients and 24 demographically matched healthy comparison subjects were scanned during task performance. At the voxel level, bipolar patients showed reduced cortical activation, relative to controls, in multiple task-related b

Selective attention and facial expression recognition in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) has been associated with facial expression recognition difficulties. However, this impairment could be secondary to the one produced in other cognitive processes involved in recognition, such as selective attention. This study investigates the influence of two selective attention components (inhibition and visual search) on facial expression recognition in PD. We compared facial expression and non-emotional stimuli recognition abilities of 51 patients and 51 healthy controls, by means of an adapted Stroop task, and by "The Face in the Crowd" paradigm, which assess Inhi

Dysfunctional role of parietal lobe during self-face recognition in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Anomalous sense of self is central to schizophrenia yet difficult to demonstrate empirically. The present study examined the effective neural network connectivity underlying self-face recognition in patients with schizophrenia (SZ) using [15O]H2O Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Structural Equation Modeling. METHODS: Eight SZ and eight age-matched healthy controls (CO) underwent six consecutive [15O]H2O PET scans during self-face (SF) and famous face (FF) recognition blocks, each of which was repeated three times. RESULTS: There were no behavioral performance differences be
