BACKGROUND: The linkage between prolactin (PRL) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is still vague. Determination of serum levels of prolactin to reveal its role in patients with SLE is the aim of the study.
METHODS: This is a case-control study performed on 40 children with SLE and 40 age- and sex-matched controls. Cases were further subdivided according to disease activity into mild, moderate, and severe groups using the SLEDAI (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index) score. INTRODUCTION: Prolactin-secreting adenoma (PRLoma) can present as large and invasive neoplasm, with increased markers of cellular proliferation. First-line approach is Dopamine Agonists (DAs) treatment; however, DA-resistance has been reported, especially in male patients. Estrogens induce lactotroph cell replication and PRL secretion: the use of anti-estrogen treatment in patients with PRLoma have been described in few cases. OBJECTIVES: Prolactin (PRL)-secreting macroadenomas usually measure between 10 and 40 mm. Giant (adenoma size ≥40 mm) PRL-tumors are not common, and larger prolactinomas (maximal diameter ≥60 mm) are rare, and their management outcomes have not been well characterized.

The ability of two proopiomelanocortin-derived peptides, alpha MSH and corticotropin-like intermediate lobe peptide (CLIP) [ACTH (18-39)] to antagonize the stimulation of PRL secretion by beta-endorphin (beta EP) was studied in the rat.
