Rumination and drug craving scores in Chinese male patients with methamphetamine and heroin use disorders: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is an essential trans-diagnostic process associated with substance use disorders (SUDs) in psychopathology. In China, methamphetamine and heroin have become major illegal drugs, but the role of rumination in their use remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between rumination subtypes and drug craving in patients with methamphetamine use disorder (MAUD) and 81 patients with heroin use disorder (HUD). METHODS: A total of 489 participants, including 408 patients with MAUD and 81 patients with HUD, were recruited from a rehabilitati

Losing oneself: Lack of self in depression and its recurrence.

Losing one's sense of self is often reported by individuals with depression, but there has been minimal empirical attention devoted to this phenomenon. This study investigated "lack of self" in depression, defined as a self-concept that is empty, unknown, vague, and/or disconnected. Participants consisted of 248 adults who were either currently, previously, or never depressed and completed measures of depression severity, disturbances in self-concept, and rumination. Previously depressed participants then entered a one-year follow-up period to monitor for relapse. Currently depressed participa

EEG coherences of the default mode network among patients comorbid with major depressive disorder and anxiety symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Higher functional connectivity within the default mode network (DMN) has been found in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of major depressive disorder (MDD). We used electroencephalogram (EEG) coherence as an index of functional connectivity to examine group differences in DMN between the MDD and healthy control (HC) groups during the resting state. METHODS: MDD patients with comorbid anxiety symptoms (n = 154) and healthy controls (n = 165) completed the questionnaires of depression, anxiety, and rumination. A 19-channel EEG recording was measured under resting

Biological links between psychological factors and adolescent depression: childhood trauma, rumination, and resilience.

BACKGROUND: The psychosocial factors play an important role in the development of depression in adolescents. we used metabolomics techniques to explore the links among childhood trauma, rumination, resilience, and adolescent depression. METHODS: We selected 57 adolescent depression patients and 53 healthy adolescents. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and Redundant Thinking Response Scale (RRS) were employed for the purpose of psychological assessment. The patients were regrouped according to their scores using the 27% high

Prospective associations between intelligence, working memory capacity, and intrusive memories of a traumatic film: Potential mediating effects of rumination and memory disorganization.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Field research indicates that lower intelligence may predispose trauma-exposed individuals towards the development of re-experiencing symptoms. However, this assumption requires further testing in controlled prospective studies. In the current analog study, we tested whether lower fluid intelligence and lower working memory capacity (WMC) independently contribute to intrusion development. Moreover, we investigated potential mediating effects of trauma memory characteristics and trait rumination. METHODS: 118 healthy participants completed tests measuring fluid intel

Prevent breaking bad: A proof of concept study of rebalancing the brain's rumination circuit with real-time fMRI functional connectivity neurofeedback.

Rumination, repetitively thinking about the causes, consequences, and one's negative affect, has been considered as an important factor of depression. The intrusion of ruminative thoughts is not easily controlled, and it may be useful to visualize one's neural activity related to rumination and to use that information to facilitate one's self-control. Real-time fMRI neurofeedback (rtfMRI-nf) enables one to see and regulate the fMRI signal from their own brain. This proof-of concept study utilized connectivity-based rtfMRI-nf (cnf) to normalize brain functional connectivity (FC) associated with

Amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) of spontaneous and induced rumination in major depression: An fNIRS study.

In the current study, we investigated the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) at rest and during a rumination induction. Specifically, we explored the differences of cortical blood oxygenation using fNIRS in subjects with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and healthy controls (HC). Rumination was assessed as state and trait measure, as well as with a qualitative semi-structured interview. Qualitative and quantitative measures of rumination indicated that the MDD group showed elevated rumination regarding state and trait measures. Furthermore, rumination differed qualitatively between

Attentional engagement, appearance comparisons, and rumination as predictors of body dissatisfaction: Evaluation of a serial mediation model in men.

Elevated body dissatisfaction is underpinned by an attentional bias towards images portraying appearance ideals. However, very little is known about the specific attentional mechanisms and mediating factors involved in this relationship in the context of male body dissatisfaction. The present study sought to replicate and extend on previous research among women showing that the relationship between attentional engagement bias and body dissatisfaction is sequentially mediated by appearance comparisons and rumination. Seventy undergraduate males completed an attentional task capable of independe

The subsystem mechanism of default mode network underlying rumination: A reproducible neuroimaging study.

Rumination is a repetitive self-referential thinking style that is often interpreted as an expression of abnormalities of the default mode network (DMN) observed during "resting-state" in major depressive disorder (MDD). Recent evidence has demonstrated that the DMN is not unitary but can be further divided into 3 functionally heterogenous subsystems, although the subsystem mechanistically underlying rumination remains unclear. Due to the unconstrained and indirect correlational nature of previous resting-state fMRI studies on rumination's network underpinnings, a paradigm allowing direct inve

Rumination moderates the role of meaning in the development of prolonged grief symptomatology.

OBJECTIVE: To address the etiology of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) by examining whether rumination moderates the role of meaning-making in mediating the impact of PGD risk factors. METHOD: A survey assessing PGD risk factors (low social support, insecure attachment, violent loss, neuroticism, and loss of a spouse), meaning, and rumination was administered 2-12 months postloss among adults across North America and Europe (mean age = 44.3, 71.9% female). At a 7-10 months follow-up, symptoms of PGD were assessed (n = 171). RESULTS: When measuring meaning with the Grief and Meaning Reconstruct

Prospective associations of negative mood and emotion regulation in the occurrence of binge eating in binge eating disorder.

Retrospective and experimental data demonstrate the importance of emotion regulation (ER) in the maintenance of binge episodes in binge eating disorder (BED). The current study tested whether mood and ER prospectively influence binge episodes in individuals with BED via ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Individuals with BED (n = 79) completed two weeks of EMA. Each sampling point consisted of a series of questions pertaining to participants' mood, ER, and eating behaviour. Successful application of adaptive ER strategies predicted subsequent abstinence, while rumination predicted subseque

Emotion regulation across eating pathology: A meta-analysis.

The goal of this meta-analysis was to examine the associations between specific emotion regulation abilities (emotional awareness, emotional clarity) and strategies (acceptance of emotions, reappraisal, problem-solving, rumination, avoidance of emotions, and suppression), and eating pathology. A total of 96 studies and 239 effect sizes were included in the analysis. Relations between global and specific emotion regulation abilities and strategies and eating disorders and eating-related symptoms were examined. Results indicated medium-to-large effect sizes for the associations between adaptive

Lifetime acute suicidal affective disturbance symptoms account for the link between suicide-specific rumination and lifetime past suicide attempts.

BACKGROUND: Suicide-specific rumination, defined as rumination about one's suicidal thoughts, intentions, and plans, and Acute Suicidal Affective Disturbance (ASAD) have each been proposed as relevant and proximal predictors of suicidal behavior. The purpose of the current study was to examine relations between suicide-specific rumination, ASAD, and previous number of lifetime suicide attempts, particularly whether ASAD accounted for the association between suicide-specific rumination and previous lifetime suicide attempts. METHODS: Undergraduate students with a past history of suicidality (N

Exercise as a buffer against difficulties with emotion regulation: A pathway to emotional wellbeing.

Though exercise is associated with emotional health, it remains unclear what psychological processes account for this relationship. The present study explores emotional recovery from and responses to stress as links. It extends prior research by exploring whether poor response tendencies, such as a ruminative response style, could mediate the relationship between regular exercise and clinical symptoms, and whether acute exercise facilitates emotional recovery from a stressor in a heterogeneous sample comprising sedentary as well as active individuals and those reporting mood and anxiety sympto

Thoughts after marital conflict and punch biopsy wounds: Age-graded pathways to healing.

Thoughts and emotions following marital conflict have received little attention but almost certainly contribute to marriage's long-term health effects. Consistent with emotion theories of aging, we expected the effects of post-conflict thoughts on important neuroendocrine and immune outcomes, cortisol levels and full-thickness wound healing, to differ by age. An age-diverse sample of married couples received a punch biopsy wound and discussed a marital problem, then privately recorded their thoughts and rated their mood. Salivary cortisol was sampled throughout the day, and wound healing was m

The Development and Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of the Negative Beliefs about Post-Event Processing Scale.

BACKGROUND: Although negative beliefs have been found to be associated with worry symptoms and depressive rumination, negative beliefs have yet to be examined in relation to post-event processing and social anxiety symptoms. AIMS: The purpose of the current study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Negative Beliefs about Post-Event Processing Questionnaire (NB-PEPQ). METHOD: A large, non-referred undergraduate sample completed the NB-PEPQ along with validation measures, including a measure of post-event processing and social anxiety symptoms. RESULTS: Based on factor analysis,

Investigating the work-family conflict and health link: Repetitive thought as a mechanism.

Research is needed to investigate mechanisms linking work-family conflict to poor health in working adults. We took a novel approach to build on extant studies by testing a potential mechanism in these associations - repetitive thought. Data came from a sample of 203 partnered working adults. There were significant direct effects of work-family conflict with lower life satisfaction, positive affect, and perceived health as well as greater fatigue. As for total effects, work-family conflict was significantly associated with all health outcomes - life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affe

Cognitive processing in the aftermath of relationship dissolution: Associations with concurrent and prospective distress and posttraumatic growth.

Non-marital romantic relationship dissolution is amongst the most stressful life events experienced by young adults. Yet, some individuals experience posttraumatic growth following relationship dissolution. Little is known about the specific and differential contribution of trait-like and event-specific cognitive processing styles to each of these outcomes. A longitudinal design was employed in which trait-like (brooding and reflection) and dissolution-specific (intrusive and deliberate) cognitive processing was examined as predictors of growth (Posttraumatic Growth Inventory) and distress (Br

Measurement of flow of thought in 68 patients monitored in post-emergency outpatient consultations: Role of ideational turmoil in the anxiety depressive symptomatology.

INTRODUCTION: Rumination, cognitive control deficits, cognitive saturation, and loss of inhibition are the major hypotheses used to explain depressive disorders. A few studies have nevertheless looked at the form of thought. In this study, we will test a double measurement of the number of thoughts and a double measurement of the flow of thought together with their correlation with well-being, mental pain, and depression. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between May and September 2015, 68 subjects, initially admitted as emergencies for acute anxiety depressive disorders and/or suicide attempts and subse…
