The Impact of Clear Speech on the Perceptual and Acoustic Properties of Fricative-Vowel Sequences in Speakers With Dysarthria.

Purpose Studies have reported that clear speech has the potential to influence suprasegmental and segmental aspects of speech, in both healthy and dysarthric speakers. While the impact of clear speech has been studied on the articulation of individual segments, few studies have investigated its effects on coarticulation with multisegment sequences such as fricative-vowel. Objectives The goals of this study are to investigate, in healthy and dysarthric speech, the impact of clear speech on (a) the perception of anticipatory vowel coarticulation in fricatives and (b) the acoustic characteristics

The Value of Speech-Language Pathologists in Auditory Rehabilitation for Adults With Cochlear Implants.

Background Standards for auditory rehabilitation are currently lacking for adults who receive cochlear implants. Speech recognition outcomes are highly variable, and many adults with cochlear implants present with suboptimal performance. Functional real-life communication abilities are not routinely measured clinically and are not strongly linked to performance on traditional measures of speech recognition. In fact, even individuals with relatively good speech recognition outcomes often present with persistent communication difficulties. In contrast to pediatric cochlear implant users, speech-

Comparing Biofeedback Types for Children With Residual /ɹ/ Errors in American English: A Single-Case Randomization Design.

Purpose Research comparing different biofeedback types could lead to individualized treatments for those with residual speech errors. This study examines within-treatment response to ultrasound and visual-acoustic biofeedback, as well as generalization to untrained words, for errors affecting the American English rhotic /ɹ/. We investigated whether some children demonstrated greater improvement in /ɹ/ during ultrasound or visual-acoustic biofeedback. Each participant received both biofeedback types. Individual predictors of treatment response (i.e., age, auditory-perceptual skill, oral somatos

Conversational speech of school-age children after syllable-timed speech treatment for stuttering.

Purpose: The purpose of this laboratory study was to investigate whether rhythmic speech was primarily responsible for stuttering reductions in four school-aged children after the instatement stage of the Westmead Program of syllable-timed speech (STS) intervention. The study was designed to inform further development of the program. Reduction in variability of vowel duration is a marker of STS, and it was predicted that this would be present in the children's conversational speech after Stage 1 of the program if they were using STS. To strengthen such a finding, it was also predicted that the

The Implementation of a Personalized Dynamic Approach for the Management of Prolonged Concussion Symptoms.

Purpose This clinical focus article reviews the existing treatment literature on the management of prolonged concussion symptoms (PCS) for specifying treatment components that hold the most promise for effectively targeting functional goals that are disrupted due to cognitive impairments. Current evidence suggests the treatment ingredients of psychoeducation and cognitive strategy instruction can be effective for addressing changes in functioning due to perceived cognitive deficits in attention, working memory, and executive functioning. Based on the literature, we propose a personalized, dyna
