Albendazole (Eskazole) is approved for strongyloidiasis. For cestodiasis Niclosamid (Yomesan) and Praziquantel (Cesol) are suited. Strongyloides stercoralis infection is a common infection in tropical and subtropical regions and is considered one of the "neglected tropical diseases." Owing to its life cycle, this infection can remain undetectable for years, preventing an early diagnosis and prompt treatment. We report the case of a 65-year-old woman who presented to us with a history of nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, and weight loss and, after initial radiologic and laboratory workup, was diagnosed with a periampullary mass with no secondary spread. She underwent an uneventful pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy,

PURPOSE: Agar-plate culture (APC) remains the most sensitive parasitological technique for S. stercoralis diagnosis. Although it was first described three decades ago, the time of incubation of the plates is neither a commonly described feature nor usually standardized. The aim of the study was to analyze the required time to detect S. stercoralis larvae in APC.
METHODS: A prospective laboratory-based study including all patients with at least one positive APC was performed. The plates were incubated at room temperature for 7 days. Clinical, analytical and parasitological features including r

A 59-year-old lady presented with a 1-week history of orthopnoea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea, night sweats and a productive cough. She had no recent history of travel. Transthoracic echocardiogram revealed preserved left ventricular systolic function with abnormal pericardial thickening and restrictive left ventricular filling consistent with pericardial constriction. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a globally thickened pericardium and showed evidence of pericardial inflammation and constrictive physiology. She did not respond to diuresis, pulsed intravenous steroids or broad s

The present study reports the first case of the presence of the intestinal nematode Strongyloides sp. in fecal examinations of a male Lutreolina crassicaudata, considered a synanthropic marsupial species with zoonotic potential. The Willis technique was used for the diagnosis. Presence of typical eggs of Strongyloides species in feces was detected. A fecal culture was performed to obtain larval stages, free-living adults and infective third stage larvae (L3) of this nematode after seven days, which was morphologically identified as Strongyloididae. This is the first report of infection by Stro

This paper reviews the occurrence and impact of threadworms, Strongyloides spp., in companion animals and large livestock, the potential zoonotic implications and future research. Strongyloides spp. infect a range of domestic animal species worldwide and clinical disease is most often encountered in young animals. Dogs are infected with Strongyloides stercoralis while cats are infected with different species according to geographical location (Strongyloides felis, Strongyloides tumefaciens, Strongyloides planiceps and perhaps S. stercoralis). In contrast to the other species, lactogenic transm

Biological invasions are among the major causes of biodiversity loss worldwide, and parasites carried or acquired by invaders may represent an added threat to native species. We compared gastrointestinal helminth communities of native Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) in the presence and absence of introduced Eastern grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) to detect alterations induced by the alien species. In particular, we investigated whether spillover of a North American nematode Strongyloides robustus occurs and whether prevalence of a local parasite Trypanoxyuris sciuri in red squi

Strongyloides stercoralis infection in humans continues to be a subject that has frequently inspired reviews and papers. Within the AIDS epidemic, interest gathered momentum with the inclusion of this infection in the indicator diseases list, and its subsequent removal 5 years later by the CDC. These actions have prompted a debate as to whether this infection has special significance in patients with AIDS and whether its exclusion from the CDC criteria is justified. A detailed review of the world literature reveals an increased awareness and diagnosis of this infection in patients with AIDS wh

The absence of larvae in lambs of six infected and controlled ewes immediately killed at birth without suckling may indicate the absence of prenatal infection. The ewes had larvae in their milk immediately prior to lambing and several hours afterwards. The persistence of infection, even after intestinal infection was removed with thiabendazole at 50 mg/kg body weigh, may be due to the pool of inhibited larvae. All the suckling lambs had patent infections within 4 to 5 days. Infection of suckling lambs with Strongyloides papillosus via milk from their ewes demonstrates the transmammary route of
