BACKGROUND Hypertension is a common complication of renal dialysis and is inadequately controlled in approximately one-third of patients. Intravascular renal denervation is an option to control sympathetic overdrive and decrease blood pressure. We evaluated the performance of Western blot (WB) analysis using commercially available antigen strips and compared the results with those of indirect hemagglutination (IHA) and indirect immunofluorescence (IFAT) for the serodiagnosis of human schistosomiasis. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite the abundance of antihypertensive drugs, resistant hypertension remains a major clinical problem. Recent technological advances render interventional management of resistant hypertension one of the hottest topics in the hypertension field. The aim of this review is to present the pathophysiologic background and the mechanisms mediating blood pressure reduction after renal sympathetic denervation, to analyze recent findings with this fascinating approach and to critically suggest future research directions.

Compensatory sweating is a major complaint following endoscopic thoracic sympathetic surgery in treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis. T3 ramicotomy was applied in order to decrease compensatory sweating. From Oct 1999 to June 2002, forty patients underwent T3 sympathetic clipping (group I), and 68 patients underwent T3 ramicotomy (group II) to treat palmar hyperhidrosis. For 80 years the sympathetic nervous system has been implicated in certain human pains, notably causalgia and reflex sympathetic dystrophy. This assumption has led to the accepted concept of 'sympathetic dependent' pain. In this critical review, the evidence for this assumption is assessed. It is found that the clinical phenomena suggesting sympathetic nerve involvement may be more satisfactorily attributed to effects of neuropeptides released from afferent C-fibres. Electric stimulation at the nodulus and uvula of the cerebellum with a train of 5-10 pulses caused a marked depression of the renal sympathetic nerve activity. The effective sites were located in a small lateral region extending through the dorsal nodulus and encroaching the ventral uvula, at 2.9-3.7 mm lateral to the midline. The depression occurred predominantly contralaterally. Stimulation at this region with pulse trains lasting for several seconds caused a transient reduction of systemic blood pressure.

The lateral saphenous vein of the dog and the rabbit ear artery were surgically denervated, by clamping the vessel or by removal of the superior cervical ganglion, respectively.
