PURPOSE: We compared 2 suturing techniques for reattachment of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) via all-suture anchor.
METHODS: We used fresh, matched-pair, cadaveric hands. We disarticulated the fingers at the proximal interphalangeal joints, preserving the proximal FDP. We released the FDPs at their distal insertion and placed an all-suture, 1.0-mm anchor at the center of each FDP footprint. Each anchor's sutures were used to reattach each FDP using 1 of 2 techniques: group H (n = 14) via horizontal mattress; group H + K (n = 12) via horizontal mattress with knots thrown and, with each

There are many factors to consider when treating an Achilles tendon rupture in the acute and chronic/neglected settings. For acute rupture, operative and nonoperative management contribute to a good prognosis with low associated risks. Patient or injury characteristics can assist in the shared decision-making about treatment. In chronic rupture, MRI may help to determine rupture location, gap distance, and tissue material available for repair. Various surgical approaches are used for chronic rupture repair. Treatment of the Achilles tendon rupture generates many interesting and complex discuss

BACKGROUND: Early tensile loading improves material properties of healing Achilles tendon ruptures in animal models and in surgically treated human ruptures. However, the effect of such rehabilitation in patients who are nonsurgically treated remains unknown.
HYPOTHESIS: In nonsurgically treated Achilles tendon ruptures, early tensile loading would lead to higher elastic modulus 19 weeks after the injury compared with controls.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 2.
METHODS: Between October 2015 and November 2018, a total of 40 nonsurgically treated patients with a

The surgical treatment of massive rotator cuff tears is a clinical challenge for orthopaedic surgeons. Moreover, tendon retraction, adhesions and fatty infiltration after rotator cuff tear will further increase the difficulty of surgical repair. Therefore, it has become a hotspot and difficulty to repair massive rotator cuff tears with a better way in current research. In recent years, with the continuous development of arthroscopic techniques, shoulder arthroscopic surgery has become the gold standard for the treatment of massive rotator cuff tears, but the adaptations, effects and combined a

BACKGROUND: Injury to the finger's extensor mechanism is a common cause of swan neck deformity (SND). Progression of extensor and flexor tendon imbalance negatively affects laxity of the volar plate, resulting in the inhibition of proper finger motion. The complexity of finger anatomy, however, makes understanding the pathomechanics of these deformities challenging. Therefore, development of an SND model is imperative to understand its influence on finger biomechanics and to provide an in vitro model to evaluate the various treatment options.
METHODS: The index, middle, and ring fingers from

The long head of biceps tendon (LHBT) is a well-recognized cause of anterior shoulder pain. Tenotomy or tenodesis of the LHBT is an effective surgical solution for relieving pain arising from the LHBT. Cosmetic deformity of the arm, cramping or soreness in the biceps muscle, and strength deficits in elbow flexion and supination are the three most common adverse events associated with tenotomy of the LHBT. Complications associated with tenodesis of the LHBT include loss of fixation resulting in cosmetic deformity, residual groove pain, pain or soreness in the biceps muscle, infection, stiffness

Reverse-flow pedicled radial forearm tendocutaneous flap transfers were performed to reconstruct simultaneous skin and tendon defects in the dorsum of the hand in six patients. All flaps survived and four of six patients obtained good functional results. To obtain satisfactory functional outcome, early surgical repair is critical after trauma. The only disadvantage of this operation is unacceptable donor site morbidity.

An 18-year-old man with cerebral palsy presented with a flexion deformity of the middle finger particularly at the metacarpophalangeal joint and ulnar dislocation of the extensor tendon. Releasing the tight ulnar sagittal band and imbricating the attenuated radial sagittal band allowed centralization of the extensor tendon. For complete correction of other deformities intrinsic release and extrinsic flexor muscle lengthening were done. Extensor tendon instability in this case was due to the combined forces of the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles on the retinacular system of the extensor mechani

From experience in the treatment of more than 800 patients by various methods of autotendoplasty which had been developed in the clinic earlier, the authors analysed the most characteristic complications of these operations. Separation of the wound edges and partial marginal necroses of the skin occurred in 7-8% of patients, mainly in bilateral damage to the neurovascular bundles of the fingers, ligature fistulas in 6-7%, ruptures in 5%, flexion contractures of the fingers formed in 2% of patients who had been operated on, suppuration of the wounds was practically not encountered. The peculiar

The Mitek Mini GII anchor is showcased as a relatively new device that provides a rapid, simple method for bony reattachment; here, it is introduced for the fixation of flexor or extensor tendons at their insertion. Transosseous tunnels with limited visualization, pull-out sutures, and external devices can now be avoided if desired. Applications for soft-tissue fixation should in no way be limited to the small bones of the hand. Expense of the apparatus remains its only major drawback.

"Triggering" of the toes, in which local tendon hypertrophy prevents the smooth movement of the tendon, has been described as a problem more theoretical than real and only three cases have been reported. The authors report a case of partial tethering of the flexor hallucis longus tendon just distal to the medial malleolus in a 28-year-old jogger who had painful triggering of the great toe on plantar flexion of the ankle and great toe. Division of the flexor hallucis longus tendon pulley distal and posterior to the medial malleolus cured the patient.

PURPOSE: Optimizing tendon structural recovery during the first 12 weeks after Achilles tendon rupture is a prime target to improve patient outcomes, but a comprehensive understanding of biomarkers is needed to track early healing. The purpose of this study was to observe healing of tendon structure over time using ultrasound-based, tendon-specific measures and to identify relationships between tendon structural characteristics and clinical measures of gait and strength.
METHODS: Twenty-seven participants (21 males, mean (SD) age 39 (11) years) were assessed at 4, 8, 12, and 24 weeks after in

Kinetic analysis of canine gait has been extensively studied, including normal and abnormal gait. However, no research has looked into how flexor tendon injury and further treatment would affect the walking pattern comparing to the uninjured state. Therefore, this study was aimed to utilize a portable pressure walkway system, which has been commonly used for pedobarographic and kinetic analysis in the veterinary field, to examine the effect of a failed tendon repair and tendon graft reconstruction on canine digit kinetics during gait. 12 mixed breed (mongrel) hound-type female dogs were includ

RATIONALE: The operative procedure for Achilles tendon rupture is relatively simple, but venous thromboembolism is serious complication with a high incidence after Achilles tendon rupture. However, the guideline for thromboprophylaxis in Achilles tendon rupture is unclear.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was 32-year-old male and underwent Achilles tendon open repair surgery. He was healthy and there are no abnormal findings other than Achilles tendon rupture. At 3 weeks after operation, the episode of loss of consciousness with convulsive movement occurred. The next day, suddenly cardiac arrest
