A study on the long-term efficacy of Seresto® collars in preventing Babesia canis (Piana & Galli-Valerio, 1895) transmission to dogs by infected Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius, 1794) ticks.

BACKGROUND: An imidacloprid/flumethrin collar (Seresto®) was previously shown to prevent infection with Babesia canis, transmitted by Dermacentor reticulatus, in dogs for up to 1 month after application. The present study evaluated the prevention of transmission throughout the claimed efficacy period of 8 months. METHODS: Eight animals each were randomly included in groups 1 (negative control) and 2 (Seresto® collar), respectively. Animals in group 2 received the Seresto® collar on Day 0. Tick challenges were performed monthly from the 2nd to the 8th month. Assessment criteria included in sit

First molecular evidence of equine granulocytic anaplasmosis in Pakistan.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum (A. phagocytophilum) is an obligate intracellular bacterium that causes equine granulocytic anaplasmosis (EGA) disease in equines. This pathogen has zoonotic potential, which makes it very important to be detected and controlled as early as possible. This study was aimed to assess the molecular prevalence, associated risk factors of EGA along with its effects on various hematological parameters. This study revealed an overall 10.67% prevalence in equine. Horses showed highest prevalence followed by mules and donkeys presenting 11.86, 10.53 and 9.43% prevalence, respec

Simultaneous detection of Theileria annulata and Theileria orientalis infections using recombinase polymerase amplification.

Theileriosis is a disease of domesticated animals in tropical and subtropical countries and causes significant reductions in livestock productivity. The arid region of Punjab in Pakistan is notorious for the presence of the vector tick (Acari: Ixodidae) and tick-borne diseases, such as theileriosis and babesiosis. The distribution of Theileria annulata and T. orientalis in the Chakwal district of Punjab was determined by developing a multiplex recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay as a scientific basis for formulating control strategies for bovine theileriosis. Specificity was evalu

Smallholder pig production: prevalence and risk factors of ectoparasites.

A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Mbeya Region, Tanzania, with the aim of describing the distribution and diversity of ectoparasites on pigs, within confinement and free-range production systems of smallholder farms. A total of 128 farms were surveyed, with 96 practising confinement and 32 practising free-range production systems. The prevalence of ectoparasites on pigs within confinement and free-range production systems was 24% and 84%, respectively. Logistic regression analyses revealed that keeping pigs in a free-range system and the presence of neighbouring pigs were risk fac

Evaluation of immunocompetent and immunocompromised mice (Mus musculus) for infection with Ehrlichia chaffeensis and transmission to Amblyomma americanum ticks.

Experiments on the natural history of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the agent of human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), would be facilitated by the availability of a laboratory animal model for transmission to vector ticks. Five strains of mice were evaluated for their susceptibility to infection with E. chaffeensis and transmission competence: C57BL/6 mice, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) deficient mice, MHC I deficient (beta2m /) mice, MHC II deficient mice (Abb /), and B and T cell deficient (Rag1 /) mice. Mice were inoculated with a low passage isolate of E. chaffeensis, and infection and mor

A review on vaccination against protozoa and arthropods of veterinary importance.

The recent advances in immunology and biotechnology have stimulated much research on the control of parasitic diseases through vaccination. This is a review of the state of the art regarding important protozoan and arthropod veterinary parasites. A live oocyst vaccine for avian coccidiosis is still in use but much work has been done on the identification, cloning, and assay of protective antigens. The sporozoites of Eimeria tenella have been the preferred subject and at least four recombinant antigens have already been tested with partial success. Premunization against babesiosis is still wide

A cluster of Rickettsia rickettsii infection at an animal shelter in an urban area of Brazil.

Rickettsia rickettsii infection is being increasingly recognized as an important cause of fatal acute illness in Brazil, where this tick-borne disease is designated Brazilian spotted fever (BSF). In this study we report five fatal cases of BSF in employees of an animal shelter in an urban area in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro in southeast Brazil after a natural disaster on 11 January 2011. Four of the cases occurred from 27 January to 11 April 2011, while the fifth fatal case was identified in April 2012. Three cases were confirmed by molecular analysis and two by epidemiological linkage.

Detection, characterization, and prediction of tick-borne disease foci.

Tick-borne disease (TBD) transmission foci need to be characterized in space and time, and are often discontinuous on both scales. An active TBD focus is dependent on the fulfillment of three conditions: tick survival, pathogen survival and opportunities for human exposure. The essentials for tick survival include food sources, reproduction, and protection from environmental extremes. The pathogen survival kit includes sufficient densities of ticks and suitable reservoir hosts, and opportunities for transmission between them in order to maintain infection. Opportunities for human exposure depe

Sequence analysis of the knockdown resistance-homologous region of the para-type sodium channel gene from pyrethroid-resistant Boophilus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

Using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and degenerate oligonucleotide primers, a partial para-homologous sodium channel cDNA was obtained from the southern cattle tick, Boophilus microplus (Canestrini). The cDNA sequence encoded the region in which knockdown resistance (kdr)-type mutations have been identified in numerous insect species. Comparison of deduced amino acids from the cDNA sequence showed high similarity with sodium channels from other species, particularly in highly conserved repeat domains of the sodium channel. Analysis of the kdr-homologous region of the genomic

Species of ticks and carried pathogens in owned dogs in Spain: Results of a one-year national survey.

This study presents the results of a national survey in Spain on the distribution of ticks on owned dogs, their phenology and the associated pathogens over one year. In the study, 1628 adult ticks were collected on 660 dogs presented to 26 veterinary practices, of which 507 dogs (76.8%) carried at least one adult tick. The primary species of ticks were Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (53%), Dermacentor reticulatus (9%), Ixodes ricinus (9%), and I. hexagonus (4%). Parasitism by two species of these ticks was rare. The four species showed a clear association with the biogeographical features of th

Whole genome phylogenetic investigation of a West Nile virus strain isolated from a tick sampled from livestock in north eastern Kenya.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) has a wide geographical distribution and has been associated to cause neurological disease in humans and horses. Mosquitoes are the traditional vectors for WNV; however, the virus has also been isolated from tick species in North Africa and Europe which could be a means of introduction and spread of the virus over long distances through migratory birds. Although WNV has been isolated in mosquitoes in Kenya, paucity of genetic and pathogenicity data exists. We previously reported the isolation of WNV from ticks collected from livestock and wildlife in Ijara Dis

Sporogony and experimental transmission of Babesia equi by Boophilus microplus.

The development of Babesia equi in salivary glands of adult female Boophilus microplus was observed under a light microscope using semithin sections stained with toluidine blue. Engorged nymphs were obtained from splenectomized foals experimentally infected with B. equi. As adults, they were then fed on rabbits for 5 days and the salivary glands of manually collected individuals were removed at intervals of 24 h. Sporozoites were found in type III granular acini cells between the 2nd and 5th days following feeding on the rabbits. Sporoblasts and sporozoites were observed in the same or adjacen

Detection of pig farms with Ornithodoros erraticus by pig serology. Elimination of non-specific reactions by carbohydrate epitopes of salivary antigens.

Ornithodoros erraticus is the European vector of African Swine Fever. It is therefore essential to know on which pig farms the tick is present in order to prevent contact with swine. Currently, studies are being made to ascertain this through the detection of anti-O. erraticus antibodies in the sera of swine, using three extracts from the salivary glands of the parasite (SGE): a complete extract (SGE-1), a soluble antigens extract (SGE-2), and a tissue antigens extract (SGE-3). The results of the present work show that SGE-2 gives the best differentiation between swine bitten by O. erraticus a

The brown ear tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann (Acarina: Ixodidae) and associated tick species on wild and domestic hosts at Muguga, Kenya.

During a study of an experimental population of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and its transmission of bovine theileriosis to cattle, some supplementary information was obtained on the role of rodents and the small carnivores in the development and maintenance of R. appendiculatus populations. Observations were also made on other common tick species found on these hosts. A total of 530 individual hosts were examined during the 4-yr period, of which the majority included, among the carnivores, the white-tailed mongoose (Ichneumia albicauda), the large spotted genet (Genetta tigrina) and the zoril
