Management of a partially ankylosed mandibular canine using controlled luxation, serial intraoral scan superimposition, and a customized lingual bracket: A case report.

RATIONALE: Tooth ankylosis is difficult to diagnose and monitor because clinical signs are nonspecific, and radiographs provide only static information. PATIENT CONCERNS: An adult female was referred after prolonged orthodontic failure involving a nonresponsive mandibular left canine, severe anterior open bite, negative overjet, lower midline deviation, and repeated debonding of a stock lingual bracket. DIAGNOSES: The patient was diagnosed with partial ankylosis of the mandibular left canine, likely related to previous segmental osteotomy and fixation-screw proximity, together with a dental

Col1a1-cre mediated activation of β-catenin leads to aberrant dento-alveolar complex formation.

Wnt/β-catenin signaling plays a critical role in bone formation and regeneration. Dentin and cementum share many similarities with bone in their biochemical compositions and biomechanical properties. Whether Wnt/β-catenin signaling is involved in the dento-alveolar complex formation is unknown. To understand the roles of Wnt/β-catenin signaling in the dento-alveolar complex formation, we generated conditional β-catenin activation mice through intercross of Catnb(+/lox(ex3)) mice with Col1a1-cre mice. In mutant mice, tooth formation and eruption was disturbed. Lower incisors and molars did not

Immediate implant placement: diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment steps/or successful outcomes.

Diagnosis and treatment planning are key factors in achieving successful outcomes after placing and restoring implants placed immediately after tooth extraction. The efficacy of immediate implant placement has been established and shown to be predictable if reasonable guidelines are followed. Some or all of the following suggestions, depending on individual circumstances should be considered when evaluating a patient for dental implants: thorough medical and dental histories, clinical photographs, study casts, periapical and panogram radiographs, as well as a linear tomography or computerized

Stress distribution in different tooth-implant supported mandibular prostheses rehabilitating unilateral free-end saddle: a biomechanical comparative finite element study.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Utilizing Finite Element Analysis, this research biomechanically assessed three prosthetic designs for mandibular unilateral free-end saddle, specifically interrogating the magnitude and distribution of stresses transmitted to the terminal anterior abutment and the supporting posterior implant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mandibular unilateral free-end saddle educational cast, with the first premolar as the last standing abutment tooth, was used. The abutment teeth of the free end saddle side were prepared to accommodate two splinted crowns. Then the cast was scanned, and an im

Effectiveness of Intraosseous Local Anesthesia (QuickSleeper 5) During Pulpotomy and Stainless Steel Crown Placement on Mandibular Primary Molars: A Crossover Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Effective pain management during dental procedures is essential to ensure positive treatment outcomes, particularly for pediatric patients. Intraosseous anesthesia, administered via the QuickSleeper system, has shown promise as an alternative to traditional local anesthesia techniques. METHODS: A single-blinded split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial took place at the dental hospital at King Saud University with 33 healthy patients (aged 4-9 years), who required pulpotomies and stainless steel crown procedures on two mandibular primary molars, to evaluate the effectivenes

Influence of intermediate abutment height and timing of placement on marginal bone loss in single implant-supported crowns: a 12-month follow-up randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the most effective combination of abutment height and timing of placement in reducing marginal bone loss (MBL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 54 patients received at least one single screw-retained crown on an implant replacing a posterior tooth (60 implants). Implants were divided into six groups based on intermediate abutment height (1.5 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm) and timing of placement (immediate: surgery 1; delayed: surgery 2): Group A3I (height 3, surgery 1), Group A2I (height 2, surgery 1), Group A15I (height 1.5, surgery 1), Group A3D (height 3, surgery 2), Group A2D (height 2,

Evaluation of mechanical properties of different polyetheretherketone endodontic post systems: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Survival of endodontically treated teeth depends on an efficient restoration of the missing tooth structure. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the mechanical properties of different endodontic post systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Human permanent maxillary central incisors (no.=58) were decoronated and root-filled. The specimens with prepared root canals were randomly divided into Group P: Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK) post and composite core and Group C: custom-made post-core of PEEK. The cementation of the posts was carried out using self-adhesive resin cement. Nano-hy

A radiographic study of permanent molar development in wild Virunga mountain gorillas of known chronological age from Rwanda.

OBJECTIVES: While dental development is important to life history investigations, data from wild known-aged great apes are scarce. We report on the first radiographic examination of dental development in wild Virunga mountain gorillas, using known-age skeletal samples recovered in Rwanda. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 43 individuals (0.0-14.94 years), we collected radiographs of mandibular molars, and where possible, cone beam CT scans. Molar crown and root calcification status was assessed using two established staging systems, and age prediction equations generated using polynomial regression.

Exposed weapons: A revised reconstruction of the facial anatomy and life appearance of the saber-toothed cat Megantereon (Felidae, Machairodontinae).

Megantereon was a widespread saber-toothed felid from the Pliocene and Pleistocene of the Old World and North America, but its rarity in the fossil record makes it complicated to restore its life appearance. Lack of complete specimens makes it necessary to combine information from fossils of different individuals to reconstruct their facial anatomy. In this work, we combine the analysis of skulls and mandibles of Megantereon from various fossil sites with the study of extant carnivorans through dissection, 3D scans, and the observation of live individuals. Megantereon combined very elongated u

Decompression of a Dentigerous Cyst Treatment in Mixed Dentition: A Case Report with 5 Years Follow-Up.

Among developmental odontogenic cysts, the dentigerous type is the second most prevailing one. It is a benign intraosseous lesion commonly affecting the mandibular region. Dentigerous cysts present a high prevalence in children as they can be caused by the eruption of permanent teeth or the infection of deciduous ones. The adopted treatment modalities include enucleation (cystectomy), marsupialization, and decompression. Decompression maintains communication between the cyst and the oral medium through a sutured fixed device, namely an acrylic stent or a pretrimmed disposable suction tube. In

Mandibular and dental characteristics of Late Triassic mammaliaform Haramiyavia and their ramifications for basal mammal evolution.

As one of the earliest-known mammaliaforms, Haramiyavia clemmenseni from the Rhaetic (Late Triassic) of East Greenland has held an important place in understanding the timing of the earliest radiation of the group. Reanalysis of the type specimen using high-resolution computed tomography (CT) has revealed new details, such as the presence of the dentary condyle of the mammalian jaw hinge and the postdentary trough for mandibular attachment of the middle ear-a transitional condition of the predecessors to crown Mammalia. Our tests of competing phylogenetic hypotheses with these new data show th

Multidisciplinary management of a child with severe open bite and amelogenesis imperfecta.

AIM: To present a case of multidisciplinary management and fixed rehabilitation of a young girl with amelogenesis imperfecta (AI), a severe open bite and occlusal instability. BACKGROUND: AI is a genetic disorder characterized by enamel malformations, disturbances in tooth eruption and significant attrition. Early diagnosis is essential, since rapid breakdown of tooth structure may occur, giving rise to acute symptoms and complicated treatment. As AI is frequently accompanied by unesthetic appearance, open bite deformity and malocclusion, a multidisciplinary approach is often required. CASE

Anterior space management: interdisciplinary concepts.

UNLABELLED: This case report describes the treatment of one patient with maxillary anterior spacing, caused by bilateral lateral peg-shaped incisors, using a planned sequence of multidisciplinary approaches for esthetic treatment. An asymmetrical gingival line was visible when the patient smiled. To evaluate the desired gingival level and the proportion of restoration to be made using the recurring esthetic dental (RED) proportion method, a diagnostic wax-up model was fabricated. Esthetic crown lengthening corrected the gingival line. RED proportion analysis suggested minor tooth movement prio

Paradental cyst: report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: The paradental cyst is an odontogenic lesion of inflammatory origin that has few clinical signs and symptoms apart from recurring acute episodes. A well-defined radiolucency associated with the roots or distal to the crown may be seen radiographically. The purpose of this article is to report on different aspects of two cases involving paradental cysts. In the first case, the patient complained about recurring pericoronitis. A semilunar-shaped radiolucency on the distal aspect of the mandibular third molar was noted on the periapical radiograph. In the second case, the patient's ma

Radiographic features of large cystic lesions of the jaws in children.

BACKGROUND: The surgical approach to cystic lesions of the jaws is either marsupialisation or enucleation. The treatment of choice is dependent on the size of the lesion, the bony integrity of the cyst and its proximity to anatomical structures. OBJECTIVES: To assess large (>2.0 cm) cystic lesions of the jaws using plain film radiography (PFR), CT, multiplanar reconstruction program (MPR) and three-dimensional CT (3D-CT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twelve children aged 7-14 years. RESULTS: The classic radiological feature was a unilocular radiolucent area surrounded by a well-defined radio-opaqu

Dental abnormalities associated with failure of tooth eruption in src knockout and op/op mice.

c-src knockout and op/op mice develop osteopetrosis as a result of defective osteoclast function and osteoclast formation, respectively. The mutant mice can be distinguished readily from their wild-type littermates around 10-12 days after birth because their incisors do not erupt, but the morphology of their teeth and surrounding bone has not been reported previously in detail. Histologic examination of jaws of src-mutant mice reveals unerupted, abnormal incisors within their bony crypts. The tooth roots are distorted by foci of haphazard proliferation of odontogenic epithelium associated with

A mucosal irritancy test device for intraoral use in dogs.

The objective of this investigation was to conduct, in dogs, a 6-hour acute mucosal irritation study of a new bioerodible treatment. The main problem was to retain the test drug in situ without extraneous irritation from the retention device. A buccal cup was machined from acrylic with a chamber capacity of 0.025 ml and a flange that could be ligated to a tooth. Ten female retired breeder beagles, 7 to 8 years old, with naturally occurring moderate periodontitis were examined and the upper canine teeth scaled to remove plaque and calculus. One week later the buccal cups were placed at the ging
