Alginates have been used in wound care for many years. In recent years alginate dressings have developed to provide an extremely cost-effective way of managing wounds with a moderate to high level of exudate. The dressing gel has traditionally been either soft or firm on removal, but with new technology softness and fast gelling may now be combined with high integrity in a single product. An example of such a product is Melgisorb from Mölnlycke Health Care (the makers of Mepore). Melgisorb is just one dressing in their range of chronic wound care products.

We have recently observed a strongly birefringent material of varying shapes and sizes in a benign breast cyst fluid specimen from a 52-yr-old woman with suspicious mammographic microcalcifications. The finding of calcium oxalate crystals in the breast cyst fluid should be regarded as a recognition of a particular type of calcification, easily overlooked with the conventional light microscopy. To date, we are unaware of any cytologic reports of this type of calcification in the breast.

Various inflammatory reactions can be induced by different crystals responsible for various arthropathies. The aim of this work was to study modifications induced in the rat, locally and at distance, by intrapleural injection of 3 forms of pyrophosphate crystals (CaPP dihydrated monoclinic (M), CaPP dihydrated triclinic (T) and CaPP anhydrous (beta]. The effects of diet-induced maternal hypercalcemia on fetal development were studied in the CD 1 mouse. Female mice were maintained for two weeks on high calcium diets and then mated. The resulting litters were surgically removed one day prior to term and compared to control litters of untreated mice.
