Cutaneous manifestations of schistosomiasis can be produced by human and nonhuman species. They can occur in the invasive stage or oviposition stage. Manifestations in the invasive stage are non-specific and include: 1. severe itching 2. Generalized anaphylactiod reaction with urticarial or erythema multiforme-like eruption. Manifestations in the stage of oviposition are specific and include: 1. Genital and perigenital granulomata; 2. Extragenital cutaneous schistosomal granulomata occurring in sites away from the portocaval anastomoses. The clinical and the histopathologic picture are describ…

The Chilblain-like lesions appeared 7.6 days (95%CI 7.4-7.8) after the viral infection and lasted for 17.5 days (95%CI 16.5-18.5), erythema multiforme-like lesions appeared in 9.5 days (95%CI 9-10) and …

Pemphigus vulgaris and bullous pemphigus comprised only 3.0% and 4.2% of the total studied cases, respectively. The other less common disorders found in our study were toxic epidermal necrolysis (1.7%), pemphigus foliaceus (1.3%), and gestat …

An attempt was made to estimate the risk of severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) to Fansidar (sulfadoxine plus pyrimethamine). Cases were identified through a spontaneous reporting system. Persons exposed were estimated using sales data of 27 countries reporting one SCAR case for either Fansidar or a related product, Bactrim (cotrimoxazole; sulfamethoxazole plus trimethoprim). Between 1974 and 1989, 126 cases were notified for Fansidar: 87 cases of erythema multiforme or Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and 39 cases of toxic epidermic necrolysis. 86% of cases were reported in Europe or North Am…

Rowell syndrome, first described in 1963 by Rowell et al., is an infrequently reported and unique syndrome occurring in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This syndrome characteristically presents with erythema-multiforme-like lesions as well as other specific immunologic and histopathological manifestations. Since Rowell's original description, diagnostic criteria have been proposed and modified to better describe the syndrome. We describe a 32-year-old African American female patient with a previous history of SLE who presented with dermatologic, immunologic, and histopatholog

Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis is an uncommon, poorly recognized and under-diagnosed catamenial dermatosis associated with hypersensitivity reactions to progestagens. Most cases manifest as urticaria, eczema or erythema multiforme-like. A 26-year-old woman developed violaceous plaques on the groin and abdomen, 4 days after a spontaneous abortion resolved with uterine curettage. The lesions recurred once monthly at the same sites, mimicking a fixed drug eruption. Although the histopathology was compatible with fixed drug eruption, positive intradermal testing and symptomatic improvement aft…

Fixed drug eruption is an erythematous eruption of one or more centimetric rounded or oval lesions well demarcated, recurrent at the same place and leaving a residual purple pigmentation. Diagnosis is clinical. Skin biopsy is not essential except in doubtful cases (eg bullous drug eruption can simulate Lyell Syndrome or mucosal reminiscent of erythema multiforme). The etiology is almost always drug-induced; rare cases of toxic or food issue were reported. Histopathology is immuno-allergic; recurrences correspond to re-exposure to allergen. There is no specific treatment except stopping the cau…

We present seven cases of a targetoid eruption, clinically mimicking erythema multiforme, occurring in paediatric patients aged 12 months to 14 years. All patients presented with a pruritic targetoid eruption on body and acral sites which spared mucosal areas. All patients demonstrated a spongiotic reaction pattern on histology without lichenoid change and demonstrated excellent responses to either oral prednisolone or topical corticosteroids. We propose the term 'targetoid spongiotic reaction pattern (TSRP)' for our subset of paediatric patients. We review the literature regarding targetoid e…

A young woman had recidivating herpes with erythema multiforme for several years. When conventional therapy failed to correct this condition she was treated with Transfer Factor (TF). Immunologic anomalies which had been registered previously became normal after the first application of TF. The skin lesions disappeared after the fourth dose. Six months later a new skin manifestation with immunologic alterations became apparent. They disappeared after two doses of TF. A year and a half later the patient has no lesions and the immunologic parameters, which were monitored throughout this period, …

Annular skin lesions have a unique morphology, and the dramatic appearance of these skin eruptions in infants can cause concern for parents and clinicians. Annular lesions appearing during infancy (defined here as birth to 1 year of age) lend to a broad differential, ranging from benign cutaneous disorders to severe systemic diseases. This review summarizes the pathogenesis, clinical and histopathologic findings, and management options of possible etiologies for annular skin lesions in infants, including annular erythema of infancy, neonatal lupus erythematosus, dermatophyte infections, hemorr

Disseminated histoplasmosis is a relatively common AIDS-defining illness, occurring in almost 4% of patients living in endemic areas and it may be the first clinical expression of the HIV infection. A broad spectrum of clinical skin lesions associated with Histoplasma capsulatum infection have been described in AIDS patients, such as erythematous macules, papules, nodules, and pustules. Herpetic, acneiform, erythema multiforme-like, molluscum contagiosum-like, vasculitic, and exfoliative forms have also been reported. To our knowledge, this is the first case of disseminated histoplasmosis in a…

A severe form of Erythema multiforme (EM), diagnosed as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) was detected in a 10-year-old Indian male child who took herbal medication of plant origin prescribed by a traditional healer for remission of his fever. The child developed a severe and florid form of mucocutaneous oral ulceration, severe ocular manifestations, along with marked constitutional disturbances and dehydration. An extensive literature search revealed few previous reports of herbal drug induced EM and SJS. In India, traditional therapy with herbal preparation (Ayurvedic medicine) is not uncommon.

Cutaneous adverse drug reactions in HIV-positive patients with their wide spectrum of manifestations remain a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Skin diseases as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis belong to this group. The typical primary lesions are erythematous macules and papules, which rapidly extend to the entire body and may be accompanied by a extensive epidermal detachment. Diagnosis and immediate therapy is indispensable because of the possible fulminant course of the disease. We report a HIV-positive patient with a cutaneous adverse drug r…

Bullous pemphigoid has been reported to be induced or precipitated by systemic therapy with several drugs, including penicillamine, captopril, frusemide and ampicillin. We report an African male patient with sarcoidosis who was prescribed chloroquine for progressive dyspnoea. After 3 months he developed generalized pruritus which evolved into a widespread bullous eruption with acral targetoid lesions resembling erythema multiforme. The histological and immunofluorescence findings were diagnostic of bullous pemphigoid. The atypical clinical features of this case resemble the phenotype that has …

Myocarditis with complete atrioventricular block is a very unusual complication of the herpex simplex infection. We report a 10-year-old boy infected very likely by the herpes simplex virus and who presented with high fever, erythema multiforme, complete atrioventricular block, and Adams-Stokes seizures. Emergent temporary pacemaker was performed for bradycardia. A sixteen-fold rise in herpes simplex antibody titer by a complement fixation method occurred within two weeks. Normal cardiac rhythm recovered 11 days later with a sequela of complete right bundle branch block after 2 years follow-up…
