Human infection with Trypanosoma gambiense in the Gboko endemic area was first reported in May, 1974 although T. gambiense sleeping sickness had been present there since the turn of the century. The disease is associated with the presence of the tsetse Glossina tachinoides and Glossina palpalis which is plentiful and widespread throughout the division as well as in thickets along the streams in the area. No successful attempt has been made to control the tsetse vector in the Division. The incidence and geographical distribution of cases of T. gambiense sleeping sickness in the Gboko area are d

Despite entomopathogenic fungi being used in various insect pest control, it is recognized that they could replace more chemical insecticides if they were more efficient. We have found that cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera responded to the infection of entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana by activating the Toll pathway. Koinobiont wasps also regulate host immunity and development to ensure the survival of their progeny. Previously, venom protein VRF1 was identified in Microplitis mediator. It enters H. armigera hemocytes, suppresses the expression of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) by

BACKGROUND: Trypanosomosis caused by Trypanosoma vivax is one of the diseases threatening the health and productivity of livestock in Africa and Latin America. Trypanosoma vivax is mainly transmitted by tsetse flies; however, the parasite has also acquired the ability to be transmitted mechanically by hematophagous dipterans. Understanding its distribution, host range and prevalence is a key step in local and global efforts to control the disease.
METHODS: The study was conducted according to the methodological recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-A

Uganda is the only country where the chronic and acute forms of human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) or sleeping sickness both occur and are separated by < 100 km in areas north of Lake Kyoga. In Uganda, Glossina fuscipes fuscipes is the main vector of the Trypanosoma parasites responsible for these diseases as well for the animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT), or Nagana. We used highly polymorphic microsatellite loci and a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) marker to provide fine scale spatial resolution of genetic structure of G. f. fuscipes from 42 sampling sites from the northern region of Uganda wh

Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever are increasing public health problems with an estimated 50-100 million new infections each year. Aedes aegypti is the major vector of dengue viruses in its range and control of this mosquito would reduce significantly human morbidity and mortality. Present mosquito control methods are not sufficiently effective and new approaches are needed urgently. A "sterile-male-release" strategy based on the release of mosquitoes carrying a conditional dominant lethal gene is an attractive new control methodology. Transgenic strains of Aedes aegypti were engineered to h

A large-scale intervention field trial of the effect of Olyset long-lasting insecticide-treated bednets on transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis was carried out in 2 cities in the Islamic Republic of Iran from October 2003 to July 2005. We enrolled 8620 individuals in 3000 households in 6 pairs of sectors in each city. Epidemiological and entomological surveys were carried out pre- and post-intervention. In both cities a statistically significant reduction was found in the incidence of new cases in intervention sectors who received bednets compared with control areas. Entomological surveys s

Cost effectiveness analysis of Chagas' vertical transmission control program in Bolivia: Today, Bolivia is the most concerned country in America by Chagas disease: Trypanosoma cruzi infection affects 20% of whole population, around 1800000 inhabitants, and mother-to-child transmission is around 5%, from 1.6 to 9.8%. Direct and indirect costs derived from disease complications and death, from birth to adulthood, add up around US$ 21 millions per year for 2,718 infected new-borns. This cost falls on individual, family and society, when the nation is struggling in a depressed economy. On the othe

Mathematical models of transmission dynamics of infectious diseases provide a useful tool for investigating the impact of community based control measures. Previously, we used a dynamic (constant force-of-infection) model for lymphatic filariasis to describe observed patterns of infection and disease in endemic communities. In this paper, we expand the model to examine the effects of control options against filariasis by incorporating the impact of age structure of the human community and by addressing explicitly the dynamics of parasite transmission from and to the vector population. This mod

A study of community awareness of mosquitos and related subjects in the residential areas of two Tanzanian cities (Dar es Salaam and Tanga) showed that residents were well aware of mosquitos. Almost all claimed to use some form of domestic mosquito control product for their personal protection, and many spend a significant portion of the household income on this. The problems of nuisance-biting and malaria transmission are usually not separated and are considered to be the result of poor environmental hygiene, for which both residents and local authorities are responsible. Although Culex mosqu

Entomopathogenic fungi and bacteria offer promising alternatives to chemical insecticides for controlling mosquitoes and ticks-key vectors of malaria and Lyme disease. However, their efficacy largely depends on immune interactions between pathogens and hosts. Here, we focus on mosquitoes and ticks as representative disease vectors and dissect conserved and divergent immune responses, from physical barriers to cellular defenses and key humoral pathways, with mechanistic insights informed by insect model systems. Furthermore, we elucidate diverse virulence and immune evasion strategies that enab

The seasonality of African swine fever (ASF) in the summers and outbreaks in farms with high biosecurity levels suggest that the ASF virus (ASFV) may be transmitted by arthropod vectors. Arthropods were collected in this study from 14 pig farms with ASF outbreaks in Korea in 2019 to explore the role of arthropods as potential ASFV vectors. A total of 28,729 arthropods, including 28,508 (99.2%) Diptera, were collected using blacklight traps, insect nets and yellow sticky strips. All arthropod samples were negative for ASFV genomic DNA according to laboratory tests using real-time polymerase cha

An insect excitatory toxin from Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK IT) was cloned into the expression vector, pTWIN1, and expressed into Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) host cells. The soluble fusion expression of CBD-intein-BmK IT was obtained. The recombinant BmK IT was purified by two anion-exchange chromatography columns and one gel chromatography column. Bioassays were carried out to verify the toxicity of this recombinant toxin. At the end of a 96 h experimental period, 83% of cotton bollworm larvae were killed with an LT(50) value of 58-62 h. Furthermore, the average weight of larvae fed on BmK I

Should the screwworm fly invade Australia, the sterile insect technique (as used successfully overseas) is currently the only feasible method of eradication. Used in conjunction with chemical control methods, it relies on large numbers of factory-reared, sterilized males competing successfully with wild males for the wild females. However, laboratory and field studies have shown that the processes of mass rearing, irradiation and distribution seriously impair the competitiveness of the sterilized flies. This study collates and analyses the relatively sparse information on the relative mating c

Genetically modified corn Bt11 is insect-resistant and expresses Cry1Ab toxin, an insecticidal protein, in kernels. Although Bt11 corn is considered safe based on animal performance, there are no reports available on the clinico-biochemical effects of feeding it to cattle. In this study, we evaluated the effects of feeding Bt11 to calves, using blood and ruminal clinico-biochemical parameters. Our three-month-long feeding experiment demonstrated that calves (n=6), fed with a ration containing 43.3% of Bt11 corn kernels as dry matter, did not develop any discernible clinical, hematological, bio

Insect-specific scorpion neurotoxin AaIT gene inserted into a binary vector was transferred into a hybrid poplar clone N-106(P. deltoides x P. simonii) growing in the Southern of China. We obtained sixty-two regenerated plants by Agrobacterium tumefaciens transferring system. PCR and PCR-Southern analysis showed that AaIT gene was incorporated into the genome of some recovered poplar plants. One of the transformed plants named A5 was significantly resistant to feeding by first instar larvae of Lymantria dispar, compared with the untransformed control plant. It caused a decrease in leaf consump

The aquaculture industry is exploring sustainable alternatives to fishmeal, with insect meals (IMs) emerging as promising options due to their high-quality proteins, lipids, and immunostimulatory compounds, such as chitin. This study evaluated how full-fat IMs affect the histomorphometry of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) mucosal tissues (intestine, skin, and gills), their barrier function, and immune gene expression to explore their immunomodulatory potential. Two insect species were tested: black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (HI), and yellow mealworm, Tenebrio molitor (TM), formulating into

BACKGROUND: The Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Programme relies on insecticide-treated nets as the principal vector control method, supplemented by reactive focal indoor residual spraying. Despite the success, local malaria transmission persists, and the underlying reasons for sustained transmission remain unclear, yet critical to optimizing vector control for elimination. Entomological characterization of transmission dynamics was conducted to identify the gaps with existing interventions and opportunities for complementary interventions.
METHODS: Adult malaria vectors were collected monthly f
