Lethal, Sublethal and Transgenerational Effects of Chlorantraniliprole on the Demography and Population Projection of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) Using an Age-Stage, Two-Sex Life Table.

The invasive fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), poses a serious threat to global maize production due to its high reproductive potential and rapid evolution of insecticide resistance. Although chlorantraniliprole is widely used for its management, information on the transgenerational effects of parental exposure to sublethal and median-lethal concentrations of chlorantraniliprole in Indian populations of S. frugiperda remains limited. This study evaluated the toxicity of chlorantraniliprole and its effects on the biology and age-stage, two-sex life-table parameters of S. frugip…

Efficacy of (R)-limonene, α-terpinene, terpinolene and β-pinene against Cochliomyia hominivorax (New World screwworm) in vitro and in vivo evaluations.

Cochliomyia hominivorax (screwworm fly) has a veterinary and public health importance, as it is the primary agent of myiasis in both livestock and humans across the Americas. This fly oviposits in fresh, open wounds, where the larvae feed on living tissue, compromising animal health and livestock productivity. Furthermore, the efficacy of conventional insecticides has decreased, suggesting the development of parasite resistance. Terpenes are major constituents of essential oils known for their insecticidal properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the terpenes (R)-limonene, α-ter

Effects of Asaia spp. on the development, size and associated microbiomes of two mosquito species of medical importance.

Vector control is essential for mitigating arbovirus outbreaks that are fuelled by the global spread of medically important mosquito species. Control based on synthetic insecticides can be ineffective due to the increasing evolution of resistance. In response, alternative strategies to insecticides, such as the sterile insect technique, have been developed. These rely on mass production and release of sterile or genetically-modified males to target vector populations. The efficient production of 'high-quality' males is crucial for sustaining these control programmes. Probiotic symbionts, inocu

Mosquitoes are a vector for many dreadful diseases known for their public health concern. The continued use of synthetic insecticides against vector control has led to serious environmental impacts, human health problems, and the development of insect resistance. Hence, alternative mosquito control methods are needed to protect the environment and human health. In the present study, the bioefficacy of (2-(((2-ethyl-2 methylhexyl)oxy)carbonyl) benzoic acid isolated from Bacillus pumilus were tested against Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles stephensi. The isolated bioactive com

Chemical profiling of Dizygostemon riparius (Plantaginaceae) plant extracts and its application against larvae of Aedes aegypti L. (diptera: culicidae).

Dengue fever is a reemerging disease of global concern among health authorities due to its high rate of proliferation. In 2019, Brazil registered its second-highest dengue mortality rate since 1998, with approximately 754 deaths and 1.5 million probable cases. Brazilian Ministry of Health prevention and control strategies for Aedes include insecticides, eradication of breeding sites, and awareness campaigns. However, as new mosquito variants resistant to conventional insecticides emerge, there is an increasing demand for effective environment-friendly plant extracts and natural substances agai

Knockout of SfVipR2 confers Vip3Aa resistance in Spodoptera frugiperda with evidence of genetic complementation among non-allelic mutations of SfVipR1, SfVipR2, and SfCHS2.

The Vip3Aa protein from Bacillus thuringiensis is widely deployed in transgenic crops to control lepidopteran pests, including the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, a highly invasive, polyphagous pest of global importance. Loss-of-function mutations in SfVipR1 (a thyroglobulin-like gene) and SfCHS2 (chitin synthase 2) have previously been confirmed to confer high-level, recessive resistance to Vip3Aa in S. frugiperda. A second thyroglobulin-like gene (HaVipR2) has recently been recognized as an important determinant of Vip3Aa resistance in Helicoverpa armigera. In this study, we first confi

Societal uses of the main water bodies inhabited by malaria vectors and implications for larval source management.

BACKGROUND: Larval source management (LSM) effectively reduces mosquito populations at their breeding sites, addressing issues like insecticide resistance that limit the effectiveness of primary interventions such as insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). Although traditionally used in urban and dry areas, recent research suggests it might also be effective in rural settings in eastern and southern Africa, where Anopheles funestus thrives in permanent water bodies that sustain year-round transmission. Targeting these habitats could enhance LSM, but it requires understanding local community practices…

Juruin: an antifungal peptide from the venom of the Amazonian Pink Toe spider, Avicularia juruensis, which contains the inhibitory cystine knot motif.

The aim of this study was to screen the venom of the theraposid spider Avicularia juruensis for the identification of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) which could be further used as prototypes for drug development. Eleven AMPs, named juruentoxins, with molecular weight ranging from 3.5 to 4.5 kDa, were identified by mass spectrometry after the soluble venom was separated by high performance liquid chromatography. Juruentoxins have a putative inhibitory cystine knot (ICK) motif, generally found in neurotoxins, which are also resistant to proteolysis. One juruentoxin that has 38 amino acid residues

Acceptability and preferences for dual-active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets in rural Tanzania: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends dual-active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets (dual-AI LLINs) for protection against malaria in areas with insecticide resistance. The effectiveness of LLINs, however, depends on user compliance, influenced by community perceptions of malaria, prevention methods, and the acceptability of LLINs. Understanding these factors is essential for the success of large-scale implementation. METHODS: This study was part of the two cluster-randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of dual-AI LLINs on malaria indicators i…

Controlling deltamethrin-resistant Rhipicephalus microplus with a phytoformulation of Annona muricata and Piper longum.

Ticks are one of the most significant vectors for transmitting diseases in livestock. Synthetic acaricides are the primary method for controlling tick populations; however, their indiscriminate application has led to widespread acaricide resistance and environmental concerns. In response to these challenges, this research has focused on developing eco-friendly herbal acaricides that ensure animal safety while minimizing environmental contamination and residual toxicity. Plants produce secondary metabolites, some of which possess insecticidal properties and have potential as natural acaricides.

Cell-penetrating recombinant peptides for potential use in agricultural pest control applications.

Several important areas of interest intersect in a class of peptides characterized by their highly cationic and partly hydrophobic structure. These molecules have been called cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) because they possess the ability to translocate across cell membranes. This ability makes these peptides attractive candidates for delivery of therapeutic compounds, especially to the interior of cells. Compounds with characteristics similar to CPPs and that, in addition, have antimicrobial properties are being investigated as antibiotics with a reduced risk of causing resistance. These CP
