Behavioral and nonbehavioral variables in the measurement of stutterers' communication attitudes.

The influence of the behavioral variables, stuttering and speech, and the nonbehavioral variables, feelings or attitudes regarding speech, on stutterers' responses to the modified Erickson Communication Attitude Scale (known as the S24) was investigated in two studies. In the first study, 19 adult stutterers answered an amended version of the S24 Scale; it permitted subjects to nominate the basis of their response to each item on the Scale. The findings indicated that subjects regarded their responses to Scale items as largely influenced by their judgments about their stuttering and speech beh

Essential hypertension and social coping behavior: experimental findings.

The present study investigated the hypothesis that mild hypertensives display a distinctive response pattern to interpersonal stress that includes: inadequate social skills, negative cognitive set and cardiovascular hyperreactivity. After completing a set of questionnaires measuring anxiety and cognitive style, subjects monitored interpersonal stress in the natural environment. Following this, blood pressure and heart rate were recorded while subjects interacted with trained role-players in two types of role-play situations: individualized high distress and low distress situations. Hypertensiv

Partnership in transsexualism. Part II. The nature of the partnership.

Thirty-five partners were identified in a group of 72 transsexuals. Six male-to-female transsexuals continued to live with their marriage partner, but the remainder of the total group cohabited with a member of the same biological sex. Two of the female-to-male transsexuals had undergone a marriage ceremony with their present partner, but the remainder had not. In most cases the social class of the partner was the same as that of the transsexual. In one case two transsexuals were living together, and this case and three others out of a total of six who were interviewed are described in more de

Agoraphobics' interpersonal problems. Their role in the effects of exposure in vivo therapy.

The effects of self-controlled exposure in vivo therapy were compared between assertive and unassertive agoraphobics and between agoraphobics with high and low marital satisfaction. Assessments were made at the pretest, at the posttest after four therapy sessions, and at the follow-up one month later. Assessments were carried out by the therapist, by an independent observer, and by the patient. No significant differences were found between the groups with high and low marital satisfaction. The only significant difference between the groups with high and low assertiveness was shown at the posst

[Conditions and factors determining the etiological structure of dysentery and its changes. Report 1. Epidemiological theory of etiological selectivity of the main (primary) pathways of infection and their differences in various nosological forms of dysentery].

The authors present the elaborated and formed epidemiological theory ("conformity theory") according to which the etiological structure of dysentery is determined by the etiological selectivity of the main (primary) waves of transmission of the infection differing in various nosological forms of dysentery. In Grigoriev-Shiga dysentery the domestic way of the spread of infection plays the main role, in Flexner and Newcastle dysentery--the water way, and in Sonne dysentery--the food way (particularly through the milk). Evolution of the etiological structure of dysentery serves as the reflection

[Development of the psychosomatic concept of perioral dermatitis].

In recent years, ,perioral dermatitis' though practically unknown in the past, has been observed rather frequently in female patients. It has proven remarkably refractory against external dermatotherapy, and numerous attempts to analyse the causality have failed. However, we very often noted certain characteristics of personality structure and social attitude in the patients afflicted with the disease. Both clinical findings and various signs of vegetative dystonia suggested psychoneurotic rather than purely somatic causes. We therefore set about to elucidate the psychic and other clinical sym

Associations Between Sensory Sensitivity and Psychological and Interpersonal Difficulties in Anxious Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood anxiety disorders are prevalent and impair children's socioemotional functioning. Abnormalities in sensory processing may play a role in the presentation of anxiety disorders. One important domain of sensory processing is sensory sensitivity, referring to heightened or diminished responses to sensory stimuli. While anxiety and sensory sensitivity frequently co-occur, research thus far has primarily focused on associations among autistic children, with limited investigation in anxious children. This study examined the associations between sensory sensitivity and anxiety sym

Longitudinal relationships among parental-adolescent attachment, peer attachment, self-concept clarity, and hope in adolescents.

Despite growing concerns regarding the development of hope among adolescents, the longitudinal relationship between parental-adolescent attachment, peer attachment, self-concept clarity, and hope remains far from being fully understood. This three-wave longitudinal study (6 months apart) across 1 year examined the relationship between attachment with parents and peers, self-concept clarity, and hope in 1,312 adolescents (age range 12-18, Mage = 14.29, SD = 1.38; 50.2% males) by using cross-lagged panel models. The results revealed a bidirectional relationship between hope and parental attachme

A meta-analytic review of the relationship between cyber aggression and substance use.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has demonstrated that various substances of abuse play a contributing role to acts of physical and verbal aggression. It is less clear if and to what extent substance use is associated with an increased risk in perpetrating cyber aggression, an emerging form of aggressive behavior that occurs through digital communication. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature resulted in 15 studies and 18 unique samples from which effect size estimates were calculated. RESULTS: Analyses resulted in a moderate, significant mean observed correlation indicating that indiv

Family functioning in pediatric trichotillomania, obsessive compulsive disorder, and healthy comparison youth.

Pediatric trichotillomania (TTM) is an understudied condition that can be highly impairing; little is known about family environmental features that shape its development and course. We examined family functioning among age and gender-matched groups of youth with primary TTM (n = 30; mean age = 12.87), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD; n = 30; mean age = 12.70), and no psychiatric history (healthy controls; HC; n = 30; mean age = 12.46). An additional group of n = 25 TTM cases was employed to examine relationships between TTM severity and family functioning. All youth completed standardized

Behaviour may be influenced by pituitary hormones or treatments. Dopamine agonist (DA) indicated in prolactinomas treatment can cause side effects, and especially impulse control disorders. In the context of prolactinomas treatment, impulse control disorders (ICD) have been reported like gambling, compulsive shopping, but mostly hypersexuality. These ICD can occur with low AD doses, and seem to be independent of type of molecule and psychiatric medical history. The main pathophysiologic hypothesis is a dysregulation of dopaminergic pathway involved in reward system. Given the possible devastat

The multiple faces of interparental conflict: Implications for cascades of children's insecurity and externalizing problems.

This multistudy article examined the relative strength of mediational pathways involving hostile, disengaged, and uncooperative forms of interparental conflict, children's emotional insecurity, and their externalizing problems across 2 longitudinal studies. Participants in Study 1 consisted of 243 preschool children (M age = 4.60 years) and their parents, whereas Study 2 consisted of 263 adolescents (M age = 12.62 years) and their parents. Both studies utilized multimethod, multi-informant assessment batteries within a longitudinal design with 3 measurement occasions. Across both studies, lagg

Postnatal Mother-to-Infant Attachment in Subclinically Depressed Mothers: Dyads at Risk?

BACKGROUND: Dyadic interactions between children and depressed mothers have been characterized as less synchronous and with lower maternal sensitivity, fostering an inharmonious, insecure attachment relationship between mother and child. Thus, these children may experience enhanced early life stress and are at higher risk of disturbed socioemotional development. Recently, this association has also been found in women with mild depressive symptoms. However, potential confounding effects of mother's history of own rearing experiences or infant temperament on the link between depressive symptoms

Mostly Heterosexual and Lesbian/Gay Young Adults: Differences in Mental Health and Substance Use and the Role of Minority Stress.

Individuals mostly attracted to other-sex but also to same-sex partners are a distinct and common sexual orientation group with possibly increased levels of health problems. The current study examined whether mostly heterosexual individuals differed in mental health and substance use from lesbian/gay individuals and whether sexual minority risk and protective factors offer an explanation in a sample of 528 Dutch young adults (16 to 25 years old, M = 21.2 years). Mostly heterosexual participants reported higher levels of psychological distress, suicidality, drug use, and smoking than lesbian/ga

Interpersonal Risk Profiles for Youth Depression: A Person-Centered, Multi-Wave, Longitudinal Study.

Independent lines of research illustrate the benefits of social support and the negative consequences of conflict and emotional neglect across family and peer contexts with regard to depression. However, few studies have simultaneously examined negative and positive interactions across relationships. We sought to address this gap in the literature by utilizing a person-centered approach to a) understand empirical, interpersonal profiles in youth and b) understand how these profiles confer risk for prospective depression. At baseline, 678 youth (380 females; 298 males) 3rd (N = 208), 6th (N = 2

College drinking problems and social anxiety: The importance of drinking context.

Social anxiety more than quadruples the risk of developing an alcohol use disorder, yet it is inconsistently linked to heavy alcohol use. Elucidation of the relation between social anxiety and alcohol use is an important next step in treating and preventing risky drinking. College students routinely face potentially anxiety-provoking social situations (e.g., meeting new people) and socially anxious undergraduates are especially vulnerable to alcohol-related impairment. Drinking to cope with social anxiety is thought to reinforce alcohol use, yet research on coping-motivated drinking among soci

Psychosocial functioning in adults with beta-thalassaemia major: evidence for resilience.

Our aims were to compare the psychosocial functioning of a sample of adults with beta-thalassaemia major to that of a control sample and to examine the protective role of quality of relationship with parents during adolescence and perceived quality of care. A total of 85 Italian beta-thalassaemia major participants and 73 controls completed an ad hoc questionnaire. Compared with controls, beta-thalassaemia major participants did not differ on relationships with significant others and coping strategies. Beta-thalassaemia major participants reported higher scores on job satisfaction, self-esteem
