In this study treatment progress and treatment results of a consecutively treated group of 44 patients displaying a Class II malocclusion were evaluated in their relationship to the treatment goal. 41% of the patients had come to see the orthodontist on the advice of their family dentist but without any subjective problems as regards their tooth position. In 43% of the patients the treatment could not be finished in accordance with the treatment plan. In approximately 2/3 of these cases the reasons for the compromised results were due to patient cooperation problems. In the other 1/3 various t

This paper illustrates some of the changes which occur during the treatment of Class II division 1 malocclusions complicated by a deep bite, and reviews the significance of these changes in relation to concepts of deep bite treatment. Particular reference is made to mandibular growth rotation and consequent differential tooth eruption in assessing factors involved in initial bite opening and consolidation of the opened bite. The cases shown illustrate that although an initial bite opening may occur by incisor intrusion and molar eruption, when viewed over a longer period of time rotational man

The current most common technique for repositioning of the mandible, bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO), was first described by Obwegeser and Dal Pont in the early1960s, and has since been modified several times. However, there is always a risk of damaging the inferior alveolar nerve. We have studied 50 consecutive patients who had high oblique sagittal split osteotomy (HSSO) as an alternative to avoid damage to the nerve. The patients were evaluated for sensory alterations and function of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Healing of both wound and bone were complete and uneventful in

OBJECTIVE: This paper reports the experience with a two-stage approach to surgical correction of the complete cleft palate, wherein timing of the second stage is dependent on the judgment of the speech pathologist and the orthodontist together with the surgeon.
PATIENTS: Of a total of 35 patients having complete unilateral clefts a sample of 22 were available for postsurgical assessment. The first-stage repair of the palate was carried out at an average age of 10.7 months (range 6 to 17 months), and the second-stage repair of the residual cleft was completed at an average age of 32.7 months (

INTRODUCTION: The position of the condyle in the glenoid fossa plays an important role in the stability of occlusion after orthodontic treatment. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides an optimal imaging of the osseous components of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and give a full size truly three-dimensional (3D) description in real anatomical size. The present study aimed to visualize and compare the position of condyle in the glenoid fossa for different occlusions by using CBCT Materials and methods: Cone beam computed tomographic images of 45 subjects, aged 18 to 42 years, were eva

OBJECTIVE: Pharyngeal airway obstruction can facilitate some forms of sleep disorder breathing (SDB) in susceptible children, especially in those having class II malocclusion. Changes in the anatomic areas surrounding the pharyngeal region during orthodontic treatment could hypothetically impact the pharyngeal airway dimensions. Management of a class II malocclusion on a growing individual with either intermaxillary elastics or different removable or fixed class II appliance designs have been proposed over the last century. The objective of this retrospective exploratory cohort study is to inv
