Probiotics for preventing gestational diabetes mellitus in overweight or obese pregnant women: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus was associated with increased risks of complications during pregnancy and delivery. The efficacy of probiotics for preventing atopic disease among overweight and obese pregnant women has not been a unified conclusion. Therefore, we aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of probiotics supplementation for overweight and obese pregnant women. METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials from the earliest publication date available to September 23, 2020, regardless of language or public…

Weakened humoral and cellular immune response to the inactivated COVID-19 vaccines in Chinese individuals with obesity/overweight.

Inactivated COVID-19 vaccines have been widely used to vaccinate the Chinese population. However, limited literature exists to explore the effect of obesity on the humoral and cellular immune response to these vaccines. In this study, 132 high BMI (Body mass index) (obesity and overweight, BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2) and 82 normal BMI (BMI < 24 kg/m2) participants were enrolled. Adverse events (AEs), Spike receptor-binding domain IgG antibody (anti-RBD-IgG), neutralizing antibodies (NAbs), and specific B-cell and T-cell responses were evaluated 21-105 days after full-course inactivated COVID-19 vaccinatio…

Exploring the role of feeling fat in individuals categorized with bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder and overweight/obesity.

PURPOSE: Despite featuring in prominent theoretical models, the role of "feeling fat" in certain eating and weight disorder presentations remains poorly understood. This study compared levels of feeling fat between people categorized with referable bulimia nervosa (BN) symptoms, binge-eating disorder (BED) symptoms, and overweight/obesity, and examined the unique associations of feeling fat on measures of eating pathology and functional impairment within each of these subgroups. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 977 participants who met criteria referable to BN symptoms (n = 419), BED symptoms…

Comprehensive assessment of coronary computed tomography angiography by using Leaman and Leiden score in overweight and obese patients.

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is a non-invasive modality used to assess for coronary artery disease. The CT Leaman and Leiden scores utilize coronary plaque location, composition and severity of stenosis to risk stratify patients for cardiovascular events with remarkable precision. This study compares the CCTA Leaman and Leiden score between overweight and obese populations in addition to their associated baseline characteristics. All patients who underwent CCTA within the last 1 year from a single institution were included for initial analysis. Body mass index (BMI) was used…

An Analysis of Overweight and Obesity Status among Childhood Cancer Survivors in Saudi Arabia: A Single Center Study.

Overweight and obesity in the pediatric population remains a growing worldwide health burden. The extent to which this trend extends to childhood cancer survivors (CCS) remains less well explored. We conducted a retrospective observational study from a single institution in Saudi Arabia to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obese status among CCS over a five-year period. A total of 91 CCS patients were identified, 63 of whom had complete weight data from their treatment to the time of the study. Of these patients, 29 (46.0%) were found to be overweight or obese [body mass index (BMI) ≥8…

Oxytocin reduces the functional connectivity between brain regions involved in eating behavior in men with overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin (OXT), shown to decrease food intake in animal models and men, is a promising novel treatment for obesity. We have shown that in men with overweight and obesity, intranasal (IN) OXT reduced the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) blood oxygenation level-dependent signal in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), the origin of the mesolimbic dopaminergic reward system, in response to high-calorie food vs. nonfood images. Here, we employed functional connectivity fMRI analysis, which measures the synchrony in activation between neural systems in a context-dependent manner…
