Do fearful eyes activate empathy-related brain regions in individuals with callous traits?

Psychopathy, a developmental disorder characterized by profound social disturbance, is associated with impaired recognition of distress cues. Since distress processing and moral socialization are closely linked, uncovering techniques to improve distress recognition could have positive treatment implications for developmental disorders that feature empathy impairments. Previous studies demonstrate that fear-recognition deficits can be remedied by redirecting attention to critical cues (the eyes for fearful faces). However, it remains unclear whether this manipulation increases activity in empat

Associative memory encoding and recognition in schizophrenia: an event-related fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: We used an event-related functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) approach to examine the neural basis of the selective associative memory deficit in schizophrenia. METHODS: Fifteen people with schizophrenia and 18 controls were scanned during a pair and item memory encoding and recognition task. During encoding, subjects studied items and pairs of visual objects. In a subsequent retrieval task, participants performed an item recognition memory test (old/new decisions) and an associative recognition test (intact/rearranged decisions). The fMRI analysis of the recognition data

The relative contributions of visual and semantic information in the neural representation of object categories.

INTRODUCTION: How do multiple sources of information interact to form mental representations of object categories? It is commonly held that object categories reflect the integration of perceptual features and semantic/knowledge-based features. To explore the relative contributions of these two sources of information, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify regions involved in the representation object categories with shared visual and/or semantic features. METHODS: Participants (N = 20) viewed a series of objects that varied in their degree of visual and semantic over

Healthy aging is associated with increased neural processing of positive valence but attenuated processing of emotional arousal: an fMRI study.

Arousal and valence play key roles in emotional perception, with normal aging leading to changes in the neural substrates supporting valence processing. The objective of this study was to investigate normal age-related changes in the neural substrates of emotional arousal processing. Twenty-three young and 23 older, healthy women underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging as they viewed images which were neutral or positive in valence and which varied in arousal level from low to high. Using a parametric modulation approach, we examined how the blood oxygen-level dependent signal varied w

Linking physiology with behaviour: Functional specialisation of the visual field is reflected in gaze patterns during visual search.

Based on neurophysiological findings and a grid to score binocular visual field function, two hypotheses concerning the spatial distribution of fixations during visual search were tested and confirmed in healthy participants and patients with homonymous visual field defects. Both groups showed significant biases of fixations and viewing time towards the centre of the screen and the upper screen half. Patients displayed a third bias towards the side of their field defect, which represents oculomotor compensation. Moreover, significant correlations between the extent of these three biases and se

Abnormal activation of the social brain during face perception in autism.

ASD involves a fundamental impairment in processing social-communicative information from faces. Several recent studies have challenged earlier findings that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have no activation of the fusiform gyrus (fusiform face area, FFA) when viewing faces. In this study, we examined activation to faces in the broader network of face-processing modules that comprise what is known as the social brain. Using 3T functional resonance imaging, we measured BOLD signal changes in 10 ASD subjects and 7 healthy controls passively viewing nonemotional faces. We replica

Face perception is mediated by a distributed cortical network.

The neural system associated with face perception in the human brain was investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In contrast to many studies that focused on discreet face-responsive regions, the objective of the current study was to demonstrate that regardless of stimulus format, emotional valence, or task demands, face perception evokes activation in a distributed cortical network. Subjects viewed various stimuli (line drawings of unfamiliar faces and photographs of unfamiliar, famous, and emotional faces) and their phase scrambled versions. A network of face-responsi

Spatiotemporal analyses of the N170 for human faces, animal faces and objects in natural scenes.

We assessed the specificity to human faces of the N170 ERP component in the context of natural scenes. Subjects categorized photographs containing human faces, animal faces and various objects. Spatiotemporal topography analyses were performed on the individual ERP data. ERPs elicited by animal faces were similar to human faces ERPs but with a delayed face activity. In the N170 time window, ERPs to human and animal faces had a different topography compared with object ERPs. Such data suggest that N170 generators might process various stimuli with a coarse facial organization and show the care

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials in infants: gender differences during early visual maturation.

This paper investigates gender differences in the peak latency and amplitude of the P1 component of the pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (pattern-reversal VEP) recorded in healthy term infants. Pattern-reversal VEPs in response to a series of high contrast black and white checks (check widths 120', 60', 30', 24', 12', 6') were recorded in 50 infants (20 males, 30 females) at 50 weeks post-conceptional age (PCA) and in 49 infants (22 males, 27 females) at 66 weeks PCA. Peak latency of the major component, P1, was considerably shorter in female compared with male infants. Differences in

Nonverbal visual attention, but not recognition memory of learning, processes are impaired in motor neurone disease.

Pathology outside the motor system is being increasingly recognised in motor neurone disease (MND) and up to 3% of patients may have overt dementia of frontal lobe type; it is not clear whether milder cognitive disturbance is a more frequent feature of the disease. Standard neuropsychological testing can be difficult in MND and we therefore used the microcomputer-controlled Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), which allows accurate assessment in the presence of motor and bulbar dysfunction. The results of subtests evaluating nonverbal visual attention, recognition memo

Multimodality evoked potentials and neurophysiological tests in multiple sclerosis. Effects of hyperthermia on test results.

Data on critical frequency of photic driving (CFPD), frequency following response (FFR), and visual, somatosensory (peroneal nerve), and brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (EPs) were obtained from 20 patients who had clinically definite multiple sclerosis and ten healthy normal subjects in a controlled, balanced study under normothermic and hyperthermic (+1 degrees C) conditions with a test-retest interval of one week. Normal subjects' test results showed no changes during hyperthermia. Patients' EP and CFPD data correlated well with history, clinical signs, and symptoms during both normoth

South African Flag Sign During Atrial Fibrillation: Physician Recognition of Acute Proximal Left Anterior Descending Artery Occlusion Despite No Automated ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Alert.

The South African flag sign (SAFS) is a non-contiguous electrocardiographic pattern defined by ST-segment elevation (STE) in leads I, aVL, and V2 with reciprocal inferior ST-segment depression (STD), classically associated with first diagonal branch (D1) occlusion. We report a 58-year-old female presenting with acute chest pain and atrial fibrillation (AF), whose 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) demonstrated a SAFS phenotype. Automated ECG interpretation generated no ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)-specific alert, classifying the tracing as AF with possible subendocardial inj

Task-specific reorganization of the auditory cortex in deaf humans.

The principles that guide large-scale cortical reorganization remain unclear. In the blind, several visual regions preserve their task specificity; ventral visual areas, for example, become engaged in auditory and tactile object-recognition tasks. It remains open whether task-specific reorganization is unique to the visual cortex or, alternatively, whether this kind of plasticity is a general principle applying to other cortical areas. Auditory areas can become recruited for visual and tactile input in the deaf. Although nonhuman data suggest that this reorganization might be task specific, hu

Insights from Eye Blinks into the Cognitive Processes Involved in Visual Word Recognition.

Behavioral differences in speed and accuracy between reading familiar and unfamiliar words are well-established in the empirical literature. However, these standard measures of skill proficiency are limited in their ability to capture the moment-to-moment processing involved in visual word recognition. In the present study, the effect of word familiarity was initially investigated using an eye blink rate among adults and children. The probability of eye blinking was higher for familiar (real) words than for unfamiliar (pseudo)words. This counterintuitive pattern of results suggests that the pr

Limb-selective regions in the lateral temporal lobe shrink from childhood to adulthood.

Perceiving hand gestures and inferring others' actions and emotions from movements of hands and limbs play an important role in every-day interactions, especially in young children. The perception of categories such as limbs, bodies, or faces is supported by category-selective regions in the temporal lobe. Some category-selective regions, such as those reacting selectively to body parts or limbs, exist both on the ventral and on the lateral side of the temporal lobe, and are part of the ventral and lateral stream, respectively. While it was recently shown that limb-selective regions in the ven

Real-world Objects Scaffold Visual Working Memory for Features: Increased Neural Engagement When Colors Are Remembered as Part of Meaningful Objects.

Visual working memory is a core cognitive function that allows active storage of task-relevant visual information. Contrary to the common assumption that the capacity of this system is fixed with respect to a single feature dimension, recent research has shown that working memory performance for a simple visual feature-color-is improved when this feature is encoded as part of a real-world object relative to an unrecognizable scrambled object. Using EEG (n = 24), we here demonstrate that this performance benefit is supported by increased neural engagement during the retention period, as indexed

Both mOTS-words and pOTS-words prefer emoji stimuli over text stimuli during a lexical judgment task.

The visual word form area in the occipitotemporal sulcus (here OTS-words) is crucial for reading and shows a preference for text stimuli. We hypothesized that this text preference may be driven by lexical processing. Hence, we performed three fMRI experiments (n = 15), systematically varying participants' task and stimulus, and separately evaluated middle mOTS-words and posterior pOTS-words. Experiment 1 contrasted text with other visual stimuli to identify both OTS-words subregions. Experiment 2 utilized an fMRI adaptation paradigm, presenting compound words as texts or emojis. In experiment

From letters to composed concepts: A magnetoencephalography study of reading.

Language comprehension requires the recognition of individual words and the combination of their meanings to yield complex concepts or interpretations. This combinatory process often requires the insertion of unstated semantic material between words, based on thematic or feature knowledge. For example, the phrase horse barn is not interpreted as a blend of a horse and a barn, but specifically a barn where horses are kept. Previous neuroscientific evidence suggests that left posterior and anterior temporal cortex underpin thematic and feature-based concept knowledge, respectively, but much rema

The contribution of object size, manipulability, and stability on neural responses to inanimate objects.

In human occipitotemporal cortex, brain responses to depicted inanimate objects have a large-scale organization by real-world object size. Critically, the size of objects in the world is systematically related to behaviorally-relevant properties: small objects are often grasped and manipulated (e.g., forks), while large objects tend to be less motor-relevant (e.g., tables), though this relationship does not always have to be true (e.g., picture frames and wheelbarrows). To determine how these two dimensions interact, we measured brain activity with functional magnetic resonance imaging while p

Functionally Separable Font-invariant and Font-sensitive Neural Populations in Occipitotemporal Cortex.

Reading relies on the rapid visual recognition of words viewed in a wide variety of fonts. We used fMRI to identify neural populations showing reduced fMRI responses to repeated words displayed in different fonts ("font-invariant" repetition suppression). We also identified neural populations showing greater fMRI responses to words repeated in a changing font as compared with words repeated in the same font ("font-sensitive" release from repetition suppression). We observed font-invariant repetition suppression in two anatomically distinct regions of the left occipitotemporal cortex (OT), a "v
