Psychological Distress in Parents and School-Functioning of Adolescents: Results from the World Trade Center Registry.

Poor school-functioning can be indicative of parent and adolescent mental health and adolescent behavior problems. This study examined 472 adolescents enrolled in the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Registry, with a two-step path analysis, using regression-based models, to unravel the relationships between parent and adolescent mental health, adolescent behavior problems, and adolescent unmet healthcare need (UHCN) on the outcome school-functioning. WTC exposure was associated with UHCN and parental mental health was a significant mediator. There was no evidence that family WTC exposure was as

Adjustment problems and emerging personality characteristics from early to late adolescence.

This 6-year longitudinal study extended earlier findings of contextual influences on adolescent adjustment problems by examining relationshi … onality traits during the adolescent years. Moreover, both initial level and change in distress and problem behaviors were predictive of late adolescent or early adult personality. This finding suggests that personality formation is a dynamic process, dependent on the growth or decline, as well as the magnitude of earlier developmental problems. Because earlier re …

Behavioral and emotional outcomes at preschool age in children born very preterm: The role of breast milk feeding practices.

BACKGROUND: Breast milk feeding (BMF) improved neurodevelopment in children born very preterm (VPT, <32 weeks of gestation), but knowledge about its effect on other mental health outcomes remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association of BMF practices with behavioral and emotional problems at preschool age in children born VPT. METHODS: We studied 263 children born VPT during 2011-12 and enrolled in the Portuguese EPICE cohort. At the age of 3, information on BMF initiation and duration was collected and behavioral and emotional problems were assessed using the parents' completed Ch

The use of pharmacologic pain sensitization in the treatment of repetitive hair-pulling.

A significant problem for many individuals who engage in repetitive hair-pulling is the fact that they experience no discomfort associated with their behavior, and can thus carry on with hair-pulling outside of conscious awareness. The present case study was an attempt to address this problem through the use of a commercially available topical cream which enhances pain sensitivity. A 38-yr-old female applied the cream daily to two affected areas on her scalp. The increased pain sensitization, in conjunction with the habit reversal technique, resulted in markedly decreased hair-pulling.

Depressed mothers' judgments about their children: an examination of the depression-distortion hypothesis.

The belief that depressed mothers have distorted perceptions of their children's problems has gained considerable currency in recent years. The empirical basis for this belief at present amounts to little more than reliable demonstrations that depressed mothers tend to report more behavior problems in their children than do nondepressed mothers. An obvious alternative to the distortion interpretation is that depressed mothers are accurate about their children's behavior problems. We examined these competing models by comparing teachers' ratings of children with ratings provided by their mother

A latent class analysis of public opinions about gambling policy goals: a population-based survey in Finland.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The significance of a reciprocal link between public opinion and policy making is widely acknowledged in literature. The aim of this study is to explore public opinion on gambling policy by identifying distinct latent classes of attitudes towards policy goals. The findings can provide insights into future gambling regulation and policy making. METHODS: Data were derived from a 2023 population-based Finnish Gambling Study (n = 5977) representing the population aged 15-74-year-olds. A set of questions regarding gambling policy attitudes were measured. By using a latent class a

A population-based survey of the characteristics of high school students with and without a history of suicidal behavior.

In a sample of 570 15- and 16-year-old normal high school students, the characteristics of those with and without a history of suicidal behavior were compared. In a written inquiry, information was obtained on family background, emotional and behavioral problems, sexual and physical abuse and suicidal thoughts and behavior. Differences between the students with and without a history of suicidal behavior were statistically analyzed for boys and girls separately by a matched control design. The results for both boys and girls indicated that the experience of sexual abuse, feelings of loneliness,

Additive and Interactive Effects of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Tic Disorder on Brain Connectivity.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and persistent tic disorder (PTD) are two neurodevelopmental disorders that frequently co-occur. Contributions of each disorder to cognitive and behavioral deficits have been reported. In this paper, we tested 3 models of pathophysiology for the two disorders (additive, interactive, and phenotypic) using resting-state connectivity associated with each disorder separately and together. METHODS: Participants were 148 children (55 with ADHD only, 33 with ADHD and PTD, 27 with PTD only, and 33 healthy control subjects) at ages 8 to 12 ye

A cross-cultural study of gambling behaviour among adolescents.

This study investigated whether the prevalence of weekly and problem gambling among youth varied according to cultural affiliation. A convenience sample of 1,265 Quebec high school students aged 12-18 was divided into three linguistic groupings: Anglophone (English), Francophone (French), and Allophone (other). Results revealed that the Allophone grouping contained the highest proportion of youth who gambled on a weekly basis and who reported gambling problems, followed by the Anglophone, and finally the Francophone groupings. Acculturation difficulties were associated with problem gambling. F

Algorithmic platform management and risk-taking behavior among Chinese food delivery riders.

Food delivery riders in China face widespread risk-taking behavior. This behavior is tied to algorithmic platform management. It is become more pressing as the digital platform economy expands. Drawing on Cognitive Appraisal Theory and Persistent Cognition Theory, this study develops a dual-pathway model integrating online immediate and offline sustained cognition, using two-wave questionnaire data from 320 riders in Changsha. Results show algorithmic platform management promotes risk-taking behavior via perceived algorithmic control and emotional rumination, while inhibiting it through proble

Relationship Between Subtypes of Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors and Sleep Disturbance in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

We examined the association of two types of restricted and repetitive behaviors, repetitive sensory motor (RSM) and insistence on sameness (IS), with sleep problems in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Participants included 532 children (aged 2-17) who participated in the Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network research registry. Confirmatory factor analysis of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised detected the presence of RSM and IS. RSM behaviors were positively associated with parent-reported sleep problems, and this relationship remained significant after controlling for anxie

Brief Report: Psychometric Properties of the Brief Problem Monitor-Parent (BPM-P) 6-18 in a Sample of Children Referred to an Autism Specialty Clinic.

Detection and monitoring of emotional and behavior problems is a critical part of clinical care for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), as well as a common focus of research. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) is a well-established caregiver-report instrument that is used for screening and monitoring of emotional and behavior problems in individuals diagnosed with ASD and NDDs. However, it has over 100 items and can be time-consuming to complete. The Brief Problem Monitor Parent Report (BPM-P; Achenbach et al. 2011) includes a

Egocentric framing - one way people may fail in a switch dilemma: evidence from excessive lane switching.

To study switching behavior, an experiment mimicking the state of a driver on the road was conducted. In each trial participants were given a chance to switch lanes. Despite the fact that lane switching had no sound rational basis, participants often switched lanes when the speed of driving in their lane on the previous trial was relatively slow. That tendency was discerned even when switching behavior had been sparsely reinforced, and was especially marked in almost a third of the participants, who manifested it consistently. The findings illustrate a type of behavior occurring in various con
