Differentiation of Benign From Metastatic Adrenal Masses in Patients With Renal Cell Carcinoma on Contrast-Enhanced CT.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article was to determine whether imaging features on contrast-enhanced CT can differentiate benign from metastatic adrenal masses in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2008 and January 2014, 135 patients with untreated RCC were found to have 163 adrenal masses (102 benign and 61 metastatic) on contrast-enhanced CT including the corticomedullary phase (66 benign and 42 metastatic) or nephrographic phase (56 benign and 33 metastatic) or both. Imaging features of renal and adrenal masses were recorded, including T and N

Stratified computed tomography findings improve diagnostic accuracy for appendicitis.

AIM: To improve the diagnostic accuracy in patients with symptoms and signs of appendicitis, but without confirmative computed tomography (CT) findings. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the database of 224 patients who had been operated on for the suspicion of appendicitis, but whose CT findings were negative or equivocal for appendicitis. The patient population was divided into two groups: a pathologically proven appendicitis group (n = 177) and a non-appendicitis group (n = 47). The CT images of these patients were re-evaluated according to the characteristic CT features as described in

Computer-aided Nodule Detection in the Lung Apices in Head and Neck Computed Tomography Angiography: An Unexpected Opportunity.

PURPOSE: Computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the head and neck includes the pulmonary apices, a common location for pulmonary nodules. Computer-aided detection (CAD) is an adjunctive tool for the detection of lung nodules and is widely used in standard chest CT scans. We evaluated whether the available software can be applied to CTA head and neck examinations, which include the lung apices, resulting in improved accuracy for lung nodule detection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, 191 previously reported head and neck CTA scans were re-evaluated for apical

An interactive system for computer-aided diagnosis of breast masses.

Although mammography is the only clinically accepted imaging modality for screening the general population to detect breast cancer, interpreting mammograms is difficult with lower sensitivity and specificity. To provide radiologists "a visual aid" in interpreting mammograms, we developed and tested an interactive system for computer-aided detection and diagnosis (CAD) of mass-like cancers. Using this system, an observer can view CAD-cued mass regions depicted on one image and then query any suspicious regions (either cued or not cued by CAD). CAD scheme automatically segments the suspicious re

Impact of virtual monoenergetic images on the assessability of lower extremity arteries in (Poly-) trauma photon-counting detector CT.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is state of the art imaging modality in patients after severe trauma. A double-bolus contrast media protocol can be used to combine both arterial and parenchymal contrast in one scan. In case of lower extremity trauma, the CT scans can be extended to include the legs in order to rule out vascular pathologies. Virtual monoenergetic (VME) images derived from a Photon-Counting detector CT (PCDCT) proved to be helpful in vascular diagnostics and could therefore also add information in these extended trauma scans. Aim of this study was to determine the VME recon
