An ion chromatographic method for the simultaneous determination of cyanide and thiocyanate in blood has been developed. After extraction by adding water and methanol to blood, cyanide was derivatized with 2,3-naphthalenedialdehyde and taurine to give a fluorescent product of 1-cyanobenz[f]isoindole. This compound was detected with high sensitivity by fluorometry and the underivatized thiocyanate was detected by ultraviolet absorption. The detection limits were 3.8 pmol ml(-1) for cyanide and 86 pmol ml(-1) for thiocyanate, and the recoveries from blood were ca. 83% and ca. 100%, respectively.

A comparison was made between Raman and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of aspirin tablets. The basis was an assay of aspirin content and the determination of salicylic acid produced by decomposition. Raman observations were performed directly on both intact and powdered tablet material. The limit of detection of HPLC with an ultraviolet detector is lower than that of the Raman measurement, but both are adequate for this application. The separation and detection of five antihistamine drugs commonly found within over-the-counter allergy and cold pharmaceutical products was performed by HPLC with chemiluminescence (CL) detection. Comparable detection limits at 5-10 pmol were found for the antihistamines by both UV at 214 nm and tris(2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium(III) CL. The isolation of several respiration deficient mutants of the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans is described. These show greatly reduced respiration rates, loss of cytochromes aa3 and b, and reduced growth rates. All of the mutants had lost the ability to assimilate a wide range of carbon sources. Ultrastructural studies showed reduced development of mitochondrial cristae in the mutants. The mutants can be divided into three classes depending on their respiration responses to the addition of cyanide.

The concentration of lactic acid in synovial fluid was estimated in 43 specimens from patients with an acute monoarthritis by a simple enzyme method. In 9 patients with 10 episodes of septic arthritis concentrations of synovial fluid lactic acid were significantly higher (mean 10.8 mmol/l) than in 33 patients with nonseptic effusions (mean 3.1 mmol/l). With this method concentrations of synovial fluid lactic acid provide a rapid diagnostic guide in the separation of septic from nonseptic arthritis.
