Neuropsychological characteristics of the syndrome of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the neuropsychological features of the syndrome of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), a surgically remediable epileptic syndrome defined by the presence of hippocampal sclerosis, using a broad and comprehensive neuropsychological test battery. SETTING: Epilepsy surgery center. PATIENTS: After scalp adn invasive electroencephalographic monitoring, a consecutive series of 107 adults were found to have intractable complex partial seizures of unilateral left (n = 62) or right (n = 45) temporal lobe origin. Patients were included if they were not retarded and had left he

What automaticity deficit? Activation of lexical information by readers with dyslexia in a rapid automatized naming Stroop-switch task.

Reading fluency is often predicted by rapid automatized naming (RAN) speed, which as the name implies, measures the automaticity with which familiar stimuli (e.g., letters) can be retrieved and named. Readers with dyslexia are considered to have less "automatized" access to lexical information, reflected in longer RAN times compared with nondyslexic readers. We combined the RAN task with a Stroop-switch manipulation to test the automaticity of dyslexic and nondyslexic readers' lexical access directly within a fluency task. Participants named letters in 10 × 4 arrays while eye movements and spe

Integrating Artificial Intelligence Into Exposure Therapy: A One Year Follow-Up Case Report of Emetophobia With Comorbid Panic Disorder.

Emetophobia is a specific phobia characterized by an intense fear of vomiting, often accompanied by panic attacks, hypervigilance to bodily sensations, and avoidance behaviors. This case study describes the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based treatment of a 24-year old woman with Emetophobia and comorbid panic disorder. Her symptoms caused significant impairment, leading her to avoid social settings, public spaces, and situations linked to vomiting (e.g., dining out, public transport, certain media content). Treatment followed a structured CBT protocol for specific phobias, including psyc

Prosthetic voice rehabilitation after laryngoesophagectomy: surgical and functional outcomes.

PURPOSE: Quality of Life (QoL) after extensive head and neck resections is of paramount importance, especially after pharyngolaryngectomy or pharyngolaryngoesophagectomy where complex digestive tract reconstruction is required (with gastric pull-up or colon transposition). Tracheodigestive puncture (TDP) is the only vocal restoration option in this group of patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate postoperative complications, vocal outcomes, voice-related and swallowing-related QoL after secondary TDP in this cohort of patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in the tertia

Proverb comprehension reconsidered--'theory of mind' and the pragmatic use of language in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: For decades, impaired proverb comprehension has been regarded as typical of schizophrenic thought disorder. Testing patients' proverb understanding has widely been abandoned, however, due to poor reliability and validity of the assessment procedures. Since the underlying cognitive deficit of impaired proverb interpretation remained obscure, this study sought to determine the relation of proverb understanding with other cognitive domains, particularly 'theory of mind' or 'mindreading', in schizophrenia. METHODS: 31 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were assessed using a novel G

Artificial Intelligence in Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis: A Scoping Review of Face, Voice, and Text Analysis Methods.

BACKGROUND: Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental condition affecting social interaction and behavior. Traditional diagnostic methods, relying on observational techniques and interviews conducted by trained professionals, remain the gold standard for ASD diagnosis. However, these methods can be time-consuming and may be influenced by subjective factors. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) offer promising approaches to augment existing methods, potentially enhancing efficiency and providing additional objective data through facial, vocal, and textual analysis. OBJECTIVE: The o

Foreign accent syndrome as a developmental motor speech disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS) is a relatively rare motor speech disorder in which the pronunciation of a patient is perceived by listeners of the same language community as distinctly foreign. FAS has been well documented in adult patients with etiologically heterogeneous, though mostly vascular brain lesions affecting the motor speech network of the language dominant hemisphere. In addition, reports exist of adult patients in whom FAS was due to a psychiatric illness. Although FAS has been reported in children, such accounts are rare and have remained largely anecdotal in that t

Successful life outcome and management of real-world memory demands despite profound anterograde amnesia.

We describe the case of Angie, a 50-year-old woman with profound amnesia (General Memory Index = 49, Full Scale IQ = 126) following a closed head injury in 1985. This case is unique in comparison to other cases reported in the literature in that, despite the severity of her amnesia, she has developed remarkable real-world life abilities, shows impressive self-awareness and insight into the impairment and sparing of various functional memory abilities, and exhibits ongoing maturation of her identity and sense of self following amnesia. The case provides insights into the interaction of differen

A comparative study of results of the von Langenbeck and the V-Y pushback palatoplasties.

The incidence of velopharyngeal competence noted in 267 cleft palate patients following palatoplsty has been reviewed. Comparisons have been drawn with regard to the cleft type and the surgical technique performed. Since there were relatively small numbers of subjects in some categories, differences in age at last examination between the von Langenbeck and V-Y palatoplasty groups, some patients were very young at time of evaluation, and a number of different surgeons at different levels of training and experience performed the surgery, the differences in velopharyngeal competence found should

Speaking out of turn: How video conferencing reduces vocal synchrony and collective intelligence.

Collective intelligence (CI) is the ability of a group to solve a wide range of problems. Synchrony in nonverbal cues is critically important to the development of CI; however, extant findings are mostly based on studies conducted face-to-face. Given how much collaboration takes place via the internet, does nonverbal synchrony still matter and can it be achieved when collaborators are physically separated? Here, we hypothesize and test the effect of nonverbal synchrony on CI that develops through visual and audio cues in physically-separated teammates. We show that, contrary to popular belief,

Objective vocal parameters in Farsi-speaking adults with Down syndrome.

Previous studies have indicated significant differences in vocal parameters between children with Down syndrome and normal children. This study was performed to see whether there is a significant dissociation between normal adults and adults with Down syndrome in terms of some vocal parameters. The participants were 22 adults with Down syndrome and 22 normal adults matched for age and gender. We measured jitter, shimmer, fundamental frequency (F0), and maximum phonation time (MPT). The results showed a significantly higher F0 and a significantly lower jitter in the Down syndrome group compared

Acoustic analysis and perception of vowels in children's and teenagers' stuttered speech.

The syllable repetitions of 24 child and eight teenage stutterers were investigated to assess whether the vowels neutralize and, if so, what causes this. In both groups of speakers, the vowel in CV syllable repetitions and the following fluent vowel were excised from conversational speech samples. Acoustic analyses showed the formant frequencies of vowels in syllable repetitions to be appropriate for the intended vowel and the duration of the dysfluent vowels to be shorter than those of the fluent vowels for both groups of speakers. The intensity of the fluent vowels was greater than that of t
