Multi-session CBM-I for social anxiety: examining psychopathology, cognitive, neural, and psychophysiological effects in a randomized controlled trial.

Cognitive Bias Modification - Interpretation (CBM-I) aims to alter maladaptive interpretations in social anxiety, yet effects are often small and outcome measures are diverse. Although CBM-I has shown promise, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear and integration with psychophysiological and neural measures has been limited. In this randomized controlled trial, eighty-eight participants with high levels of social anxiety completed two lab sessions, an online training in between, and online follow-up. Participants filled out questionnaires, completed interpretation bias tasks, and underwent

Deep learning-based dental age classification from panoramic radiographs: a multi-granularity, multi-model comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of a hybrid deep learning architecture, MaxViT-T, for fine-grained dental age estimation (DAE) and coarse-grained age-group classification using panoramic radiographs, and to interpret the model's decision-making process through Explainable AI (XAI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A dataset of n = 2,761 panoramic radiographs from patients aged 6-18 years was used. Two classification tasks were performed: a 13-class fine-grained age estimation and a 3-group coarse-grained age classification (age ranges 6-9, 10-13, and 14-18 years, approximating the early mixed, l

A framework for delivering real-time, instrument-relative navigation in transoral robotic surgery.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is a minimally invasive, inside-out technique that, compared with traditional open approaches, provides fewer post-operative complications, shorter hospital stays, and improved survival for early-stage head and neck cancer. However, TORS is limited by its steep learning curve and poor visualization of deep tumor margins. This randomized crossover study evaluated a surgical navigation system's potential to enhance accuracy and user experience with real-time, instrument-relative feedback. Seven Teflon beads (d = 2.381 mm) were embedded at the tongue base of a por

The neural basis of sequence learning: A neuroimaging meta-analysis across social, cognitive and motor domains.

Despite its importance, sequence learning has been mostly studied in the visuo-motor domain and its neural underpinnings are debated. Here, we present a novel coordinate-based meta-analysis of brain areas involved in deterministic sequence learning across social mentalizing, cognitive, visuo-motor and motor domains, under both implicit and explicit conditions, focusing primarily on acquisition. The analysis revealed a central network including frontal areas, cerebellum, and basal ganglia, with domain-specific specializations. At the cortical level, the medial prefrontal cortex appears to be sp

Boosting hemianopia recovery: the power of interareal cross-frequency brain stimulation.

Visual field loss is a common consequence of stroke and manifests in approximatively one-third of patients in the chronic stage. Such loss can significantly impact daily life activities, compromising tasks such as reading, navigating or driving. Although slow and labour intensive, evidence suggests that early interventions with tailored rehabilitation programmes might stimulate visual recovery and improve quality of life in stroke survivors. To enhance the effects of such rehabilitation programmes, we designed a novel, non-invasive, pathway-specific, physiology-inspired cross-frequency brain s

Naturalistic patterns of sustained attention across early childhood: Developmental profiles and longitudinal associations with executive functions.

The capacity to sustain attention over time develops rapidly over early childhood and is associated with socioemotional and cognitive outcomes. However, sustained attention has largely been studied in either shared or independent contexts, leading to gaps in our understanding of how trade-offs between sustained attention to shared versus individual targets may predict later outcomes. We examined this question in a longitudinal sample of 1,290 children (49% female, 43% Black), living in predominately rural, low-income regions, using a naturalistic shared picture book reading task. Children's su

Modulating the influence of recent trial history on attentional capture via transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of right TPJ.

In visual search, salient yet task-irrelevant distractors in the stimulus array interfere with target selection. This is due to the unwanted shift of attention towards the salient stimulus-the so-called attentional capture effect, which delays deployment of attention onto the target. Although powerful and automatic, attentional capture by a salient distractor is nonetheless antagonized by distractor-filtering mechanisms and is further modulated by cross-trial contingencies: The distractor cost is typically more robust when no distraction has been experienced in the immediate past, compared to

Altered Neural Oscillations During Multisensory Integration in Adolescents with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), who were exposed to alcohol in utero, display a broad range of sensory, cognitive, and behavioral deficits, which are broadly theorized to be rooted in altered brain function and structure. Based on the role of neural oscillations in multisensory integration from past studies, we hypothesized that adolescents with FASD would show a decrease in oscillatory power during event-related gamma oscillatory activity (30 to 100 Hz), when compared to typically developing healthy controls (HC), and that such decrease in oscillatory power w

Biomechanical and ergonomic assessment of urban transit operators.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of neck and low back musculoskeletal injuries in transit operators has been shown to be high; with work absences exceeding double the National average. There is a lack of biomechanical data generated from field researches to inform on musculoskeletal risk associated with transportation and driving occupations. Instead there has been a reliance on simulated driving and questionnaire-based research. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to examine the musculoskeletal and biomechanical stresses experienced by urban bus drivers. The main objective was to obtain a baseline

Delayed and disorganised brain activation detected with magnetoencephalography after mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Awareness to neurocognitive issues after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is increasing, but currently no imaging markers are available for mTBI. Advanced structural imaging recently showed microstructural tissue changes and axonal injury, mild but likely sufficient to lead to functional deficits. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has high temporal and spatial resolution, combining structural and electrophysiological information, and can be used to examine brain activation patterns of regions involved with specific tasks. METHODS: 16 adults with mTBI and 16 matched controls were subm

Body borne loads impact walk-to-run and running biomechanics.

The purpose of this study was to perform a biomechanics-based assessment of body borne load during the walk-to-run transition and steady-state running because historical research has limited load carriage assessment to prolonged walking. Fifteen male military personnel had trunk and lower limb biomechanics examined during these locomotor tasks with three different load configurations (light, ∼6 kg, medium, ∼20 kg, and heavy, ∼40 kg). Subject-based means of the dependent variables were submitted to repeated measures ANOVA to test the effects of load configuration. During the walk-to-run transit

The influence of loading intensity on muscle-tendon unit behavior during maximal knee extensor stretch shortening cycle exercise.

Tendon stiffness increases as the magnitude and rate of loading increases, according to its viscoelastic properties. Thus, under some loading conditions tendons should become exceptionally stiff and act almost as rigid force transducers. Nonetheless, observations of tendon behavior during multi-joint sprinting and jumping tasks have shown that tendon strain increases whilst muscle strain decreases as the loading intensity increases. The purpose of the current study was to examine the influence of external loading intensity on muscle-tendon unit (MTU) behavior during a high-speed single-joint,

Memantine shows promise in reducing gambling severity and cognitive inflexibility in pathological gambling: a pilot study.

RATIONALE: Although pathological gambling (PG) is relatively common, pharmacotherapy research for PG is limited. Memantine, an N-methyl D-aspartate receptor antagonist, appears to reduce glutamate excitability and improve impulsive decision making, suggesting it may help individuals with PG. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to examine the safety and efficacy of Memantine in PG. METHODS: Twenty-nine subjects (18 females) with DSM-IV PG were enrolled in a 10-week open-label treatment study of memantine (dose ranging from 10 to 30 mg/day). Subjects were enrolled from January 2009 until April 2010.

Apolipoprotein E affects both myelin breakdown and cognition: implications for age-related trajectories of decline into dementia.

BACKGROUND: Age-related myelin breakdown is most evident in later-myelinating white matter (LMwm) brain regions. This process might degrade cognitive processing speed (CPS) underlying age-related cognitive decline and the predominance of age as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) 4 allele is the second most important AD risk factor. We tested the hypothesis that ApoE4 accelerates age-related slowing in CPS through the process of myelin breakdown. METHODS: Calculated transverse relaxation rates (R(2)), an indirect magnetic resonance imaging measure of myelin bre

Investigating Sensorimotor Decision-Making in Depressed Individuals Using a Bayesian Approach.

Depression is among the most prevalent and disabling mental health conditions worldwide. It is associated with low mood and motivation, cognitive inefficiencies, altered reward and punishment learning, and broader executive dysfunction that can disrupt daily functioning. Depression has also been linked to differences in sensory perception, sensitivity, and processing speed. However, how depression affects sensorimotor decision-making under uncertainty remains comparatively understudied. In this study, we examined how individuals with depression process and weigh prior information relative to c

Signatures of Covert Neuron Loss in the Local Field Potential of Motor Cortex.

BACKGROUND: Covert stroke is understudied despite occurring 10 times for every symptomatic stroke and contributing to stroke's enormous global disease burden. For instance, does covert stroke replicate the neuroelectrophysiological spectrum impact of symptomatic stroke? We explored this by using our novel electrolytic lesioning platform to induce covert neuron loss. METHODS: During a multimonth arm reaching task, electrolytic lesions were delivered to the motor cortex of 2 large animals (U: n=4; H: n=7). Effects on behavioral metrics and local field potential features (bandpowers, aperiodic/p

Adolescent development of decision making processes in n-back task performance and links to pubertal timing and tempo.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is associated with substantial improvements in cognitive performance, with faster and more accurate decisions, yet the underlying mechanisms and the role of pubertal maturation remain unclear. Pubertal maturation can be characterized by timing, capturing whether an individual reaches pubertal milestones before or after peers, and tempo, capturing how fast one progresses through puberty relative to peers. We applied computational modeling to examine developmental changes in decision making and working memory and tested whether pubertal timing and tempo explain variance b

Augmented reality enhanced physical simulation for femoral nailing training.

PURPOSE: Current femoral nailing simulators face a trade-off between delivering procedural guidance and realistic haptic feedback. This study aimed to address this limitation by developing and evaluating an augmented reality (AR)-enhanced physical simulator that combines real surgical instruments with AR-based visualization. The system provides spatial feedback on fluoroscopic imaging orientation and implant placement within hidden anatomical structures, supporting self-directed learning. METHODS: A hybrid simulator integrating a synthetic femur, real surgical instruments, and an AR interface

GAPrompt++: Multi-Granular Geometry-Aware Point Cloud Prompt for 3D Vision Model.

Pre-trained 3D vision models have substantially advanced point cloud analysis, yet adapting them to downstream tasks via full fine-tuning is computationally expensive and storage-intensive. Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) offers a promising alternative by reducing both adaptation cost and storage burden. However, existing prompting-based approaches ignore the intrinsic geometric structures of point clouds, thereby limiting their adaptation capability. This limitation stems from their inability to encode both fine-grained geometric cues and coarse-grained structural semantics, as well as
