BACKGROUND: The development of International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) Core Sets greatly enhances the glob … onment (e.g., hearing aids or noise). Mental functions, including higher level cognitive functions, temperament and personality were frequently emphasized.
CONCLUSIONS: Almost three quarters (73.3%) of the entire ICF classification categories were included in the expert survey results. This proportion emphasizes the importance of a multidimensional tool, suc …

Feeding behavior in dairy cattle has a significant impact on feed efficiency, which is important for increasing the profitability of livesto … l welfare. The main welfare-associated factors influencing feeding behavior are social behavior and temperament, and environmental effects. Cattle are social animals and hierarchy has a notable impact on feeding behavior, especially when access to feed is limited. Competition for feed causes a reduction in the average feeding time but increases feeding rate. …

This study examined individual differences in mathematics learning by combining antecedent (A), opportunity (O), and propensity (P) indicato … zed tests and questionnaires. Results indicated significant differences in personality, motivation, temperament, subjective well-being, self-esteem, self-perceived competence, and parental aspirations when comparing children with and without MLD. In addition, A, O, and P factors were found to underlie mathematical abilities and disabilities. For the A factors …

INTRODUCTION: Preventing temperature stress on medication for prehospital medical care is a challenge, especially in re-source-limited environments like the Arctic. Most medication used by military prehospital providers is intended for storage between 15 and 25°C-defined as "controlled temperature." The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of storing medication within controlled parameters by a lightweight, highly mobile, and self-supporting Role 1 Medical Treatment Facility during cold weather operations.
METHODS: Within a standard cooling container, we placed t

BACKGROUND: Early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) is an atypical syndrome that can be confused with other neurodegenerative diseases. This disease presents before the age of 65, with symptoms that generally affect executive functions, praxis, and visuoperceptual abilities, as opposed to episodic memory. Highly sensitive individuals present the temperament trait of sensory processing sensitivity, which is characterized by a differential susceptibility compared to other individuals. Neuropsychological evaluation should involve a holistic and integrative person-centered care approach for optimal…

Stress during adolescence has profound effects on the onset and severity of substance use later in life. However, not everyone with adverse experiences during this period will go on to develop a substance use disorder in adulthood, and the factors that alter susceptibility to substance use remain unknown. Here, we investigated individual differences in response to stress and drugs of abuse using our selectively bred high-responder (bHR) and low-responder (bLR) rats. These animals model extremes of temperamental tendencies and differ dramatically in both stress responsiveness and addiction-rela…

BACKGROUND: Childhood behavioral disorders including conduct disorder (CD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occur. Prior twin research shows that common sets of genetic and environmental factors are associated with these various disorders and they form a latent factor called Externalizing. The developmental propensity model posits that CD develops in part from socioemotional dispositions of prosociality, negative emotionality, and daring; and recent research has supported the expected genetic and environmental associations betwe

The current study examined whether parental and contextual risk factors contribute to mothers' and fathers' differential treatment (MDT/FDT) when accounting for sibling dyad characteristics. Also explored was whether family type (single mothers vs. 2 parents) moderated the links between the parental and contextual correlates and MDT. One hundred and seventy-two families with older (M= 7.4 years) and younger (M= 5.2 years) siblings were studied. Parents and children reported about the parent-child relationship, and parents reported about the children's characteristics, their own psychological r

This study surveys the association of restricted and repetitive behaviours in pre-school children with their emotional and behavioural problems. Parents of 504 pre-school children selected by cluster sampling participated and filled in the questionnaires including repetitive and restricted behaviour (RRB) scale and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The parents reported repetitive and restrictive behaviours are gender-related in pre-school-aged children. Hyperactivity and emotional problems are significantly in association with all the four types of repetitive and restrictive behavi

BACKGROUND: Whether levels of neuroticism or extraversion differ between patients with bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and subjects from the general population, or between BD I and BD II patients, remains unclear.
METHODS: BD patients (n=191) from the Jorvi Bipolar Study, and MDD patients (n=358) from both the Vantaa Depression Study and the Vantaa Primary Care Depression Study cohorts, were interviewed at baseline and at 18 months. A general population comparison group (n=347) was surveyed by mail. BD patients' neuroticism and extraversion scores, measured by Eysenck P

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are a group of large proteins that are responsible for the clinical syndrome of botulism. The seven immunologically distinct serotypes of BoNTs (A-G), each produced by various strains of Clostridium botulinum, act on the neuromuscular junction by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, thereby resulting in flaccid muscle paralysis. BoNTs are synthesized as single inactive polypeptide chains that are cleaved by endogenous or exogenous proteases to generate the active dichain form of the toxin. Nicking of the single chain BoNT/E to the dichain fo

Asymmetries in the surface temperature of the fingertips of the right and left hands were gathered on four independent samples of children ranging in age from 4 to 8 years (N = 398) while watching film clips in order to determine if the direction or magnitude of asymmetry was related to behavioral signs of fear or inhibition. The left index finger was cooler than the right index finger for all four groups. The right ring finger was cooler than the left ring finger for two of the four groups, and of similar temperature for the other two groups. There was no relation between direction of asymmet

An extreme degree of shyness in young children is a temperamental trait under modest genetic influence and characterized by distinct physiological profiles. Data from both the United States and New Zealand indicate that maternal exposure to short daylength during pregnancy, especially the midpoint of gestation, predicts an increased risk of subsequent shy behavior in children. Estimates of attributable risk indicate that approximately one-quarter of shyness prevalence can be linked to pregnancy during times of reduced daylength. This phenomenon might be mediated by changing concentrations of m…

Although there is evidence for the intergenerational transmission of anxiety disorders, there is little research in relation to specific parental disorders. This study evaluated three groups of mothers with at least one child aged 7-14, defined in terms of maternal obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; n=23), panic disorder (n=18), and healthy controls (n=20). Parental perceptions and symptomatology, general and disorder-specific child symptoms and mother-child interactions were investigated using self-report, informant report and independent assessment. Mothers with OCD and panic disorder expre

Children with severe antisocial behavior have an increased risk of showing violently aggressive and other forms of problem behavior in adolescence and adulthood. It is well established that both biological and social factors are involved in the development of antisocial behavior. The primary aim of this paper is to discuss the evidence that specific neurobiological systems are involved in the etiology of childhood-onset antisocial behavior. These factors are responsible for the severity of the behavioral problems observed in antisocial children, but they also play a role in their persistence,
