Posterior Tibial Tendon Integrity Can Be Screened With Plain Anteroposterior Foot Radiography.

Posterior tibial tendon integrity is an important consideration when treating adult-acquired flatfoot caused by posterior tibial tendon dysf … 51.5±15.7 years. Ultrasonography showed that 4 patients had normal tendon integrity, 6 patients had tenosynovitis and no tendinopathy, 8 patients had tendinopathy and tendon continuity, and 3 patients had loss of tendon continuity. The surgeons provided consistent radiographic findings for 81.0% of patients (17 of 21). On the basis of the ultrasonographic findi …

Tendoscopic treatment of intrasheath subluxation of the peroneal tendons.

BACKGROUND: Intrasheath subluxation of the peroneal tendons does not have an injury of the proximal retinaculum. The aim of this study was to describe the tendoscopic technique and preliminary results. METHODS: Six patients with intrasheath subluxation of the peroneal tendons were treated tendoscopically. All patients had preoperative pain and a clicking sensation at the lateral retromalleolar area. Mean followup was 18.3 (range, 14 to 24) months. These six patients included three males and three females, with a mean age of 23.5 (range, 18 to 33) years. The AOFAS and Visual Analog Score for p

Cuboid oedema due to peroneus longus tendinopathy: a report of four cases.

OBJECTIVE: To highlight focal bone abnormality in the cuboid due to tendinopathy of the adjacent peroneus longus. DESIGN: A retrospective r … using MRI in three patients, but with greater clarity in two cases using CT. Additional findings of tenosynovitis of tibialis posterior, oedema in the adjacent medial malleolus and synovitis of multiple joints in the foot were seen in one patient. Imaging diagnosis was made in all cases avoiding bone biopsy, but surgical exploration of the peroneal tendons was …

Comparison of tenoscopic and ultrasonographic methods of examination of the digital flexor tendon sheath in horses.

The purpose of this study was to compare sonographic and tenoscopic findings with the purpose of establishing the accuracy and limitations of ultrasonograophy as a non-invasive diagnostic modality in evaluating the DFTS and its enclosed tendons. The medical records from 22 horses which underwent tenoscopic desmotomy of the palmar/plantar annular ligament were evaluated in a retrospective study. The qualitative assessment of sonogrophic and tenoscopic findings were documented for the digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS), the palmar/plantar annular ligament (PAL), the superficial digital flexor t

Biomechanical models for the pathogenesis of specific distal upper extremity disorders.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the pathogenesis of most disorders that occur in the distal upper extremity is generally lacking. The individual roles of postulated etiologic factors, such as biomechanical or psychosocial exposures, are poorly understood and their potential interactions even less so. This article proposes biomechanical or physiological models of pathogenesis for specific distal upper extremity disorders. METHODS: Tendon entrapment of the dorsal wrist compartments (tenosynovitis), peritendinitis, lateral epicondylitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome are common specific neuromusculoskelet…

Limited surgical treatment of de Quervain's disease: decompression of only the extensor pollicis brevis subcompartment.

A septum between the abductor pollicis longus tendon and the extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) tendon in the first extensor compartment is frequently encountered during surgical treatment of de Quervain's disease. It was hypothesized that de Quervain's disease was secondary to EPB entrapment and the decision was made to decompress only the EPB subcompartment. Twenty-two patients were treated with this method. Sixteen patients had a septum in the first extensor compartment and 6 patients had a single canal. After surgery, all patients had complete relief of pain and tenderness over the first exten

[Surgical treatment and results of healing of de Quervain stenosing tenovaginitis].

Within a period of 6 years we operated on 109 patients with De Quervain's disease. Of the patients 82% recovered completely, 18% had slight residual complaints, e.g. stress-dependent discomfort and irritations of the superficial radial nerve. The operative technique is presented in detail and the frequency of anatomical variations of the first extensor tendon compartment is emphasized.

Carpal tunnel syndrome with cystic bone lesions secondary to amyloidosis in chronic hemodialysis patients.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is increasingly recognized in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis. Although the etiology remains obscure, angioaccess-related vascular engorgement and edema, and ischemic neuropathy are two likely possibilities. Amyloidosis is a relatively rare cause of CTS and had previously been thought to occur almost exclusively in patients with multiple myeloma. We report seven patients on chronic hemodialysis who developed CTS and were shown to have amyloid deposition within the synovium. Amyloid was demonstrated by characteristic staining with Congo red on polarizing mi

Chronic Pediatric Ankle Swelling Due to an Occult Foreign Body: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic ankle swelling in the pediatric population presents a diagnostic challenge due to a wide range of differential diagnos … ion. Plain radiographs were normal, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated flexor tendon tenosynovitis without identifying a causative lesion. Subsequent ultrasonography revealed a linear echogenic structure suggestive of a retained foreign body. Surgical exploration confirmed and enabled removal of a wooden foreign body measuring 1.7 × 0.3 cm, with …

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: Advances in Imaging and Clinical Practice.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) has become a cornerstone imaging modality in pediatric rheumatology, providing a safe, non-invasive, and highly sensitive method for assessing musculoskeletal pathology. Reliable interpretation of MSUS requires awareness of developmental anatomy, optimization of technical parameters, and recognition of common artifacts. These considerations are especially important in children, where physiological vascularization and age-related changes in cartilage or bone can mimic pathology. MSUS enables the detailed visualization of synovitis, tenosynovitis, enthesitis, an…

Outcome of Pulley Release via a Radial Mid-Lateral Approach for the Trigger Finger at the A2 Pulley.

Background: Trigger finger occurs primarily at the A1 pulley. However, triggering of the flexor tendon can also occur at the A2 pulley. The … od (mean: 99 weeks; range: 19-180 weeks). Conclusions: Our procedure is preferable for managing the tenosynovitis at the A1 and A2 pulleys. The release of the A2 pulley at the radial edge via a radial mid-lateral approach yielded a favourable result without bowstringing. Level of Evidence: Level IV (Therapeutic).

IFI16 plays a critical role in avian reovirus induced cellular immunosuppression and suppresses virus replication.

Avian reovirus (ARV), which commonly induces viral arthritis or tenosynovitis and immunosuppression in chickens, is associated with the nonstructural protein p17 that plays a crucial role in viral replication and regulates cellular signaling pathways through its interaction with cellular proteins. In our previous study, we identified the host protein IFN-γ-inducible protein-16 (IFI16) as an interacting partner of ARV p17 through yeast two-hybrid screening. In the current study, we further confirmed the interaction between IFI16 and p17 protein using coimmunoprecipitation, glutathione S-transfe…

Coxa pedis: can calcaneal pronation angle be considered a predictive sign of medial plantar arch overload?

PURPOSE: To assess whether a correlation between the calcaneal pronation angle and the presence of internal plantar arch overload signs (such as upper-medial spring ligament lesion, posterior tibial tendon tenosynovitis, etc.) could lead to a better understanding of coxa pedis pathology. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred ankle MRIs of consecutive patients were retrospectively reviewed measuring the calcaneal pronation angle and either the presence or absence of internal plantar arch overload signs. Next, the association of overload signs with increasing pronation angle was evaluated to establ…

Common foot and ankle disorders in pregnancy: the role of diagnostic ultrasound.

Foot and ankle disorders are common during pregnancy, driven by significant physiological changes including weight distribution, hormonal fluctuations, and fluid balance. These changes often result in conditions such as varicose veins, thrombophlebitis, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), edema, overpronation, ankle sprains, metatarsalgia, stress fractures, ligament tears, synovitis, tendon tears, tenosynovitis, paratenonitis, plantar fasciitis, and Morton's neuroma. This paper emphasizes the diagnostic utility of ultrasound for these conditions, given its safety, non-invasiveness, and real-time imagi…
